The poor demand for rash wheat at all
centers, however, was said to be the futi la
mental reason for the heavy ton of the
speculative merket. Another influence that
contributed to the weakress here was the
lite ral movement of wheat from Argentina,
shipments for the week being 1.176.0

One news item that encouraged the bulls

NEW TORK. Jan. Constraint waa
manifest on the speculsttve spirit of th
stock market today and tbe tone was heavy
snd dull for tbe greater part of the time.
The positive weskness. however, of the
opening dealings which came over from th
preceding day was soon dlaetpsted.
The pressure centered largelv upon Amal
gamated Copper owing to disappointment
over the dividend declaration. The amount
of the distribution waa what had been gen
erally expected, but disappointment was
felt that the style of the dividend wss not
made regular 1 per cent qusrteriv Instesd
of V, per cent regular and 4 per cent extra,
which was felt to Implv a question as to
the maintenance of the rate The stock
was forced down an extreme 1 and with
out making a recovery was effectively sup
ported above the low point.
More effect than usual was produced by
the disquiet of foreign security msrkets on
account of the disturbances In Rusfia.
Great Interest was shown In the news of
the conference between Pennsylvania rail
road officials and employes in the effort to
sdjust the labor dispute and the uncer
tainty as to the result had its effect In re
pressing activity in stocks. Reports of
gross earnings In railroads for the second
week In January showed a considerable
falling off In the recently prevailing level
of earnings with the mixture of losses
compared with last year bringing the av
erage for seventeen railroads reporting to
an actual decrease of over 2 per cent from
last year's level. But the movement of spe
cial railroads was ciearly baned on the hop
of Increased return from dividend. This
was notably the rase with the Chicago &
Northwestern stocks, for which encourage
ment I given by the recent advance In tha
dividend rate on Chicago. St. Paul. Minne
apolis at Omaha, which Is a subsidiary
stock. An inference seemed to be drawn
of a hope for more liberal dividend allow
ances among the Vanderbllt properties gen
erally. New York Central Itself was not
ably strong arid there was response also In
Canada Southern. Cleveland. Cincinnati,
Chicago A St. Ixiuls. both common and pre
ferred; Peoria At Eastern snd Lake Erie &
V estern.
There were a number of notable gains
smotig specialties and minor railroads, but
In the standard lists St. Paul and Louis
ville Nashville were alnjnt the only
stocks to show appreciable strength.
The sluggishness of the general list was
not modified by the forecasts of the week's
currency movement Indicating another gain
in cash of upward of $;.000.ou0. Inferences
unfavorable to the activity of Interstate
trade are auggrsted by the heavy conges
tion of funds here. The rushing up of
Reading to KV In the last half hour of the
market was only slightly more successful
than previous movement In stiffening the
tone generally and the closing was irregu
lar and active.
Bonds were firm. Total sales, par value,
$6,760,000. lnlted States new 4 declined
per cent on call.

CATTLK There was a falrlv liberal run
of cattle here today for a Friday, but the
demand seemed to be jut about equal to
the supply and as a result there waa not a
great deal of chang in either direction.
The quality of the offerings ws not very
good, which of course had a tendency to de
press the market.
Beef steers, if at af) desirable, sold with
out trouble at steady prices, but the com
mon and part fat kinds were In limited de
mand and In some cases sales were made
that looked a trifle easbr than the same
kind brought yesterday. The change in
ruling prices, however, was hardly of
enough Importance to be worthy of men
tion. Most everything changed hands in
good season.
The demand for cow stuff was quite brlBk
snd the Letter grades sold fully steady.
The demand for that class seemed to be
fully equal to the supply. The market yes
terday was rather uneven, so that some
sales today looked higher than yesterday,
while others looked lower, but on the aver
age there was not a great deal of change.
The common to medium grades also sold In
much the same notches they did yesterday.
Trading was fairly brisk on all kinds, so
that a good clearance wa made.
Bulls, veal calve and etucs did not show
enough change from yesterday to be worthy
of mention.
The market on Blockers and feeders was
n little slow today, the same as usual on a
Friday, and eiocpt in the oace of good
heavy cattle, which were scarce, the mar
ket was. if anything, a trifle lower. Rep
resentative sales:
tt!EF STEERS.
SHEEP There was a small run of sheep
and iamb here this morning, only about
2. & being on sale. The market could safely
be quoted steady on more desirable grades,
of which there were only a few on sule to
day. Mexican wethers sold at $0.85 snd
Mexican yearlings $6.35. Some fair western
lambs brought $, and a small bunch of na
tives $7.60. The feeling on the common
kinds wa weak and trading rather slow,
particularly in the case of ewes.
There is nothing new 10 he maid of the
feeder market as the demand Is sufficient tu
hold prices steady.
Quotations for ted stock: Good to cholc

BOSTON, Jan. 20. WOOL Concerning
the market the commercial bulletin will say
tomorrow: The market is extremely dull
snd firm. No large blocks have been sold,
but there has been a modest business with,
the small mills in territory, scoured and
pulled. Prices show no change. The feel
ing Is strong. Several larga mills hav
enough raw material to carry them lor a
year. Importations of Australian and
South American are large and accumulat
ing, lyciidon opening waa a diHap)olntment.
Reports from the dry goods market are
encouraging. Four of the largest Boston
dealers have resumed contracting in the
west despite efforts to restrsln them. Th
shipments of wool from Boston to data
from Iiecember 29. according to the same
authority, are 14.953.315 pounds, against 15.
147,618 pounds at th same time laat year.
The receipt to date are 11.580.8S9 pounds,
against 10.155.536 pound lor the same
period last year.
