16 TIIE OMAHA ' DAILY REE: SUNDAY, JANUARY 15. 1903. TAX FltHT IS NOT GIVEN UP Eeal Estate Exchange Committee 8aji it ii Earnest and Active. SAUNDERS AND CLARKE SURPRISE OMAHANS assaaBigBaaw Loral Men KsperteeJ Les;l1atnra Redeem Campaign riedaes Wltboat rrfitr from Their Coastltaents. ' We hare not given up the fight for a law that will permit local authorities to uog railway terminal and .ropcrty other tlian the right-of-way," said W. O. ITo of the tax committee of the Real KMato exchange when askqd about the matter In connection with the statements of Douglas county legislators that they were waiting upon Omaha organisations before proceeding. "While we are not very hopeful of getting what we want from tho legislature, yet we Intend to keep up the fight. At present we have two law yers working on the bill that we will propose and urge. We do not Intend to moke any extra noise or excitement, but will prosecute the effort quietly, but aa effectively aa wa know how. Sorprlsed at Statement. "I am eomewhat surprised at tha Btate mrnta of Senator Saunders and Repre entative Clarke, as we of the Real Estate exchange had been looking forward to con siderable Independent effort toward rail way taxation reform from these two mem bers, aa well as from Representatives Anderson, Dodge and Mtfxen, who were nominated and elected upon a platform expressly declaring for the local assess ment of railway terminals. Just why, after btlng elected with such promises In their mouths, these legislators should stand aside and wait for Instructions from their constituents is not quite clear to me. It seems to me that we have the right to expect Indi pendent Initiative action from them without waiting for any urg ing from thJ Real Estate exchango or any other civic body In Omaha. "The tat committee does not Intend to let the matter lungulsh, and If these gen tlemen do not sec fit to proceed on their own responsibility we shall take up the nttcmpt to have the laws changed so that the railway terminals In Omaha and other cities may be taxed In conformity with tha other property and made to pay their Just burdens of the revenue necessary for the local government." Sentiments of Others. According to other members of the com mittee they have been waiting for a favor nblo opening In tha legislature before pressing the taxation reform matter, and it Is Indefinite Just when the matter will be taken up. Like Mr. Vre, they ex pressed surprise over the atatements of Senator Saunders and Representative Clarke and are at a loss to understand why these and other Douglas county repre sentatives should deem it at all necessary to stand aside and wait for pressure from Omahu. They had hoped that the railway tax fight would be taken up, aa promised by the legislators mentioned, without any demands from the Real Estate exchange, which already has spent considerable money in the fight end is now disposed to play a waiting rather than an aggressive campaign.
