today cause.1 a weak finish In the wheat
market. The May delivery after almost
equalling last Hoptemlier's high tlgurea,
closed at a loaa uf He as compared with
yeeterday-i Corn la up a shade. Oats show
a gain of c. Provisions are down 2Vi5e.
The efheat market at the opening gave
Indications of acme willingness to sell be
low the figures current at the end of the
previous day's session. Initial qu"Utlons
on May were Unchanged to lower, at
$1 17 to $1 174. The factor that Inspired the
early selling was a decline In pricea at
Liverpool. Aside from the ' weakness of
foreign grain markets, however, the tenor
tif general news was bullish. Nortbweatern
receipts were small and the extreme cold
weather in the northwest promised a con
tinuance of light movement from the farms.
The visible supply statistics ahowed a de
crease of 353,oi)0 bushels. As a result, bear
ish sentiment In the pit aoon gave way
and the market became remarkably atrong.
Shorts were anxloua buyers and u.ulckiy
bid up the price of May to $1.18, a price
only a trlflo below the high point touched
during tho speculative rurore due to the
north western crop, calamity. Later In the
day all advance was lost and .prices dropped
to a point considerably below yesterday's
closing quotations. May selling oft to
Sl.ltilfc. The break waa due largely to
heavy realizing sales by a leader of the
bull clUtue. There waa also moderate sell
ing resulting from a partial let up In de
mand for cash wheat at Minneapolis. The
market closed rather weak with May at
Il.ltiT4. Clearances! of wheat and flour were
equal to 66.000 bushels. The world's visible
supply as shown by Rradstreets. decreased
ti.Saa.OUO bushels. Primary were 470,000 com
pared with 780,000 bushels a year ago. Mln
neapolla, Duluth and Chicago reported re
ceipts of 272 cars, agalnat 781 cara last week
and 48 cars a year ago.
Covering by local shorts and a fair de
mand from commlaalon houses held the
corn market Comparatively firm In spite of
lower pricea at Liverpool. The bulge in
wheat also had considerable Influence. May
opened a shade to Vc lower, at 44,'S441c
to iVi. sold between 44i&44le and 44,J)-Msc
and closed at 44Hc Local receipta were
694 cars with five of contract grade.
The oats market waa dull with trading
mostly f a scalping character. A large
decrease In the visible supply had a ten
dency to strengthen prices. An Improved
caKh demand was an additional bullish fac
tor. May opened unchanged at to7,c, sold
tip to 8Hc, and closed at the highest point.
Local receipts were 144 cars.
Provisions held fairly steady In the face
of heavy offerings. Higher cables and
moderate receipts of hogs had a tendency
to revive bulish sentiment. No special de
mand, however, waa In evidence. Prices
at the close showed slight losses, May
pork being off Be. at $12.57VJ. Lard down
SViiUBc, at $.86fj$t;.87Vi. Ribs were 2Vic
lower, at $6.62V.
Estimated receipts tomorrow: Wheat, 18
ears; corn, 143 cars; oats, 76 cars; hugs,
39.000 head.

NEW YORK. .Jan. 10. Today s unim

to that of yesterday, except that today
the neglect was even more pronounced;
the early rl.e leas vigorous and the fol

of speculative etitlment on the part of
professional element it followed yestcr

ther large shipments from New ork. The
official statement of the production of gold
at the Rand for December, giving the
output as 362.264 ounces, attracted atten
tion on account of the uninterrupted ex
pansion shown In the monthly rate of
output from that center. The maximum
monthly production of gold In the. Irons
vaal was 459.709 ounces, which wus In Au
gust 1X99. The present rate of Increase,
which has gone on steadily since the re
sumption after the-Boer wur. thus promises
to bring the supply from that Held up to
the maximum within the next year. The
imtnrtance of this large source of re
plenishment for the world's stock of gold
must be taken account of In the consid
eration of money and financial prospects.
Of special movements In todays mar
ket that In lAiulsville c Nashville was
plainly due to the Increase In the, dividend
of ita subsidiary stock, Nashville. Chatta
nooga Sc. St. Ixiula. Professional attention
centered In the Paclllcs. The restoration
of the full preferred dividend rate by
United States Cust Iron Pipe waa the
ground for the activity with profit taking
In that stock and probably Influenced some
of the trading In other industrial special
ties. The Chicago Union Traction stocks
reflected the financial adjustment of the
street railroad companies. Not much of
the early advance was left at the clos
ing, which was heavy. . , A
There Was variety in the bond market,
but the prices moved irregularly. Total

le were oulte
uoerai una morning and trains were very
slow in arriving, which of course delayed
the market to quite an extent. The quality
of the offerings was Inferior, which had u
still further depressing effect. In meet
cases, however, the change In prices trom
yesterday was not at all radical and. all
things considered, a fairly good market was
experienced. - ....
liuyera took bold of the mote' desirable,
grades it lieaf steers as though they wauted
them aad the market on aucl kinds looked
to be about steady with yesterday. When
it came to the commoner kinds, though, the
market was rather slow and sales were
made weak to a dime lower. Owing to tho
fact that receipts w-eru quite liberal and
also to the slow arrival of trains, it wus
late before even tho bulk of the cattle was
disposed Of,
The cow market suffered a little more
than the trade on steers. Tho general mai
ket on cow stulf was right around a dime
lower. There was considerable unevenness
In the prices paid, though, so that while
some sale were nearly a dime lower, others
looked to be more than that. Trading waa
rather slow all the morning, aa buyers did
not seem to be as anxious for supplies as
they have been of late, and tho day was
well advanced before the big end of the re
ceipts was out of first hanus.
Bulla were, if anything, a trifle lower and
veal calves were alow and weak.
There were not many stnekers and feed
era in the ynrds and aa a remilt the market
held juxt about ateady on anything at all
dcalrable. Common kinds were slow and
hard to sell nt steady prices owing to the
limited demand for that class of offerings.

IIOOB Receipta of hoga : were lijora lib
eral this morning at all points, but the
demand seemed to be aboul ei(iial i(J the
cieeaalon, and a fairly giaxl market wa
experienced. At this point I lie mxrket
opened steady to strong, or generally a
had higher. Trading waa hot very active,
however, aa packers were alow to pay His
advance and salesman -were not wHIlng to
cut loose unless they could get a little mure
mmity than Ih'y did yesterday. The bulk
tis earlv sales went from 14 80 to $4 88
and the c hoicer loads sold largely at $4 67.
Trains were riithr slow in arriving, wnich
delated the msrket to quite an extent, but
ha 'majority of the early hog was dis
posed of In good season.
The close of the market was very slow
and weak. When the lute train began to
arrive packer got very bearish and not
only took off nil of the advance, but closed
the market lower than yesterday aver
age. The lata sales were right around
$4 S7'. or mosllv 6c lower" than the earlv
market. Packer, nf course, did not like
the Idea of taking eff that much, and a a
result trading ass vety s'nw and at noon
there were still several loads In first hands.

SHEEP There was another very moil
crate run of sheep and lambs here today,
and with a continued liberal demand the
market was strung and active on both
sheep and lambs. Buyers were out early
and practlcallv everything changed hands
aa fasf as ottered. The general market
can safely 1h quoted strong and active,
and in a good many Instani-e sales were
made that were fully a dime higher. As
high H $6.00 was paid for yearling., wethers
sold for $6.60. ewes $4.70 and a small bunch
of native ewes sold for $4 90. A new lop
was put on th lamb market for the sea
son, as high as $7.4X1 being paid for west
erns. There were practically no feeders In the
yards this morning, but anything at all
decent would have sold readily at good,
strong prices.
