NEW YORK, Jan. . Gatlierirg disap pointment oer the mcderate investment cemana tor steaks aivi over tle reluctance of tlie outside public to eom- into the mar ket t'aufu-d toe general de, l,ne in prices to riav. The growing ."'ueaishness of the m.i'rket and ihe dith-uity ot getting prices up has proved irksjine all the v et k to the room trading element, whose liicunood is dependent on motion in Cue inaret of on knd or anomer. 1 l.e oTiacle to the ad- ance prompted a considerable proportion of this element 10 stll stocks. It a,d not appear thai there was any grest amount of liquid.iuon in ti e inoven.eM and there wereuo news dni lopnients to prompt a seiiir.j of se i.i iti.-s. iiouut oer the Jovei to wi;iili prices hac bien lilted and over their lability ut that level may liave prompted sjrne selling. 1 The movement waa not Widely different from that on preceding days except that there was a la' k of such sustaining points In the market as had been used up to today. With the exception of a momen tary advance in Ann. Igamated Copper and some continue absorption of the Eries and Readit g there whs no strong feature at sny time today. The failure cf explanation fir the strength of Erie- yroused some sus picion of m professional mutiipillatlve orifc-in lor it so that it lost its effect on the ret of the market. The rise in Amalga mated Copper was connected with dis cussion of Its dividend prof-p r'ts. As to the features of a decline it became fairly general during the course of the day Mnd aas apportioned, not according to any news ot conditions, but rather according to the week's previous advance, thus Indi cating a pruin taking iharacter for the movement. The news of the day did not change from the recent favoiahle tenor as afleotlng properly values, gome effect may have been produced by the report of tlie definite dotertiUuation to appeal the Northern Se curities ease, which caused a drop in that stock on the curb. But its subsequent rally did not help the stock market. Rail road reporting earnings made no deviation from tlie recent advancing tendency. In the cotton market the decline in prices was reported to be attracting at last large buying orders from foreign splnnejB and the week's shipments of corn were re garded as lilgnly grstllying. The ship ments of the latter cereal roe to 1. 256.333 bushels, which are pronounced to be the largest for any week since March, 19i. Tills revival ot the corn movement is of particular importance on account of the languid outward movement of wheat and proiiuaca au effective stipply in the for eign exchange market. That market con tinued to advance today and inquiries by foreign bankers showed thut there is no nbalemetit in prospect of the outward movement of gold. It is evident, however, that the movement of currency has turned In fall tide from the interior to New York, the preliminary ligurea indieatlng a gain by the banks of upwards of W.uOu.ion. There is a feeling growing up that a large ac cumulation of reserves ut this center Is now awaited as an effective opiortunlty for tie offering of lurge new issues of se curities. The fall In prices gained Its great est velocity In the tinal hour and over ran itself.- resulting In an active demand to cover shorts by the room traders. The closing was Irregular. Buyers a .e out at the earliest hour they have been for many weeks and evervthlng changed hands about ns fast as offered. Several trains were late, which delayed the close, but, except for the late arrivals, an early clearance aas made. "The few cars of beef steers that arrived sold readily at prices generally a dime higher. Packers wtre all short on sup plies snd it was not a question of what they wanted, out of what .they could got, and as a result common cuttle Bold to good advantage, owing to the absence of better grades. The market is now Just shout back to where it was a week ago yesterday, which was the high point last week. This advance has of course been brought about by extremely light receipts. In Chicago the faot Is noted thst while good cattle have Improved there was such an enormous supply of common kinds there on Monday that it has taken practically all the week to clean them up, so that common to fair cattle are selling little, if anv, better than they were al the low time Monday. At this market, however, common as well as choice cattle have advanced. The cow market a-as also active and higher today. The few that were offered did not begin to meet even the more urgent requirements of the trade. Com mon cattle and also the more desirable grades sold generally a dime higher than yesterday, which takes prices Just about back to the high point of last week. Buy ers have evidently been much surprised at the way country shippers have cut down their supplies this we. k. aa the big run last Monday led buyers to believe that receipts would be heavy all the week. Packers have had to have cattle and as a result competition has been keen, with prices sharply higher. Bulls, veal calves and stags all sold at stronger price. As high as ls.U0 is now being paid for the choicest grades of Calves, which is 50c higher than has been paid for some time rat There were very few stockeis snd feed ers in the yards this morning, and, the same as usual on a Friday, not many were wanted. The market was certainly no more than steady on the few thut mere offered. Representative sales: BEEF STEERS. So. 18 ... l... 11 n.'.'-'. ii.'... 11.'.'.'. AT. o. At.
