GIBBONS PRAISES THE ORDERS Largs Andlenea Listens ta Naw Year'a Vermosi by the Car dinal. BALTIMORE. Jan. l.-Th cathedral was filled almost to overflow today by the worshipers, who had made up their minds to tart the new year with a re ligious record. Cardinal Gibbons preached at 11 o'clock and hla sermon abounded in aound ad vice for the coming year. The subject of his sermon, however, was the "Bene ficent Institution of the Catholic church." His eminence referred espe cially to the Limp Sister of the Poor. The Sisters cf Mercy and the Order of St. Vincent De Paul were also referred to In glowing terms. At the close of tha pontifical roaas the cardinal held hla usual New Year'a day reception In tin art hispNcopal residence and greeted several hundred of persons of all creed.' , llee Want Ada Produce Koeuii GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET Dtctmber Liquidation Takes lorn Povi Twe Cents. jaSBBBBBBBBBBaa END OF WHEAT DELIVERY FEATURLESS Reported Overestimates la Odessa and Ontario Corn Sltaatloa Dall aad Little ellla Pressare Oats Qalet. OMAHA, Dec. 81, 1H. The December liquidation came to an end In wheat without any demonstration of any srt. but th end of the December corn hrouKlit a decline of 2c from the cpen Ir.g. This made the corn 2 under the May option. The wheat market was nervoue, but not so much so as during1 the pre ceding day. Friday It was most confusing, as hy some It was thought the Wall street pool wss dumping its holdings and by others this selling was considered merely 1"T the purposs of shaking off tallers. Chicago eleventh-hour tallers did liquidate, which caused some weakness. The Decem ber wheat opened up todav at I1.14H, one half cent above th Friday close. The high point was II 14H. but the market weakened toward he close and the last quotation on December was II 13 The May wheat closed Friday at 81.13V It opened todav at 84 14H. declined to 81.13, rallied at the close to 11.14V The eaKtern long interest bought most or Its wheat at near the present figure and has no Inducement to sell now. The December liquidation in corn brought a weak close. The Friday session ended at 44 ve and today's opening was 44'ic, but the market steadily declined with one or two small bulges until the closing figure was f2V. The corn situation Is dull. The sell ing rressure Is not urgent, hut It Is large enough to keep the market from going up. T he buying Is- not Imperative, but It comes from Influential Interests and Is in volume enough to keep the market firm. Farmers City. Illinois, reports corn In that section !eu m onp-h"''f to three-fourtha marketed. The prices have been good enough to sat isfy the farmers and the roads have been in good condition. A S Other buyers 12 26 647 Total 113 10.691 1.09H CATTLE There were a few cattle In the yards this morning, but not enough with which to make a test of the market. For the week receipts show a decrease, as com pared with last week amounting to about 3.000 head and of about 2.000 head as com pared with the same week of last year. The tendency of prices on beef steers wss upward the early part of the week, owing- to very light receipt and to a fairly good demand. On Friday, however, there waa a liberal run and packer made use of the opportunity to break the mar ket, with the result that they took off nearly nil they put on the early part of the week. In some cases steers that Just suited buyers yesterday sold perhaps a dime higher than the same kinds brought last week, but as a general thing there wa very little change. In other words, the market I back to Just about where It was before the bad weather of this week caused a shortage In supplies. Good to choice cornfed steer may be quoted from 84.90 to 15.50 and something strictly prime would probably sell well up toward t 00. Fair to good cattle sell from 84 25 to 14.75 and the shorter fed and common kinds from 84 .15 down. The cow market followed much the same course as the stfer market. Common to medium cow yesterday lost all of the ad vance of the early port of the week, but choice cows and heifers are perhaps lOo to 15c higher than they, were a week ago. Buyers all seem to be anxious for the better grades and as a result they did not suffer as badly on FTlday as the com moner kinds. Good to choice grades sell from 82.90 to 83.50. with strictly choice grade up to 13.80 or a little better. Fair to good go at 82 25 to 32.75 and cannera largely from tl 50 to 12.00. Bulls advanced the first part of the week, but the market closed with price. If anv thing, a little lower than they were the week before. Feeder bulls sell mostly from 82.00 to 1250. with good fat bulls from 8? 60 to 13 50. Bologna bulla sell from 12.50 down. Veal cslvee are sfeady for the week: best grades up to 15 60. The atocker and feeder market was slow nd weak the first part of the week, but the latter part the demand Improved, owing to better weather, and closing prices are Just about the same as they were at the close of last week. Good to choice grades sell from 83.50 to 84 00; fair to good. 81.25 to 83.50, and commoner kinds from 83.15 down. The market could be quoted active and nearly a nickel lower. The long string went at 84 474, with the bulk of all the ale at 84 45 to 34.50. with choice hogs up to $4,524. Trading waa quite active at the decline, so that most all the early arrivals mere disposed of In good season. Some of the trains were late In arriving, which d layed the close to quite an extent. Trading on the close waa rather slow, with the feel ing a little weak. For the wefk receipt hav been very light, there being a decrease aa compared with last week of about 24.000 head and of 17.000 head a compared with the aame week of last year. Tha Kndency of prices wa upward until Friday, when there waa a reaction, followed by a decline today of about a nickel.
