it over with him and the client said he
would compromise for $26. His lawyer
made a reasonable charge and I closed
with them on the spot and paid them.
"Then I went back to my client told him
I had put up such a bluff that he never
would hear of the case again, turned in a
bill that covered the coat of the settlement
I had effected and he paid it without a
murmur. He somotime speaks, to me now
of the clever work I did In that caae, but
he doesn't know how clever it really was
and what a lot of cash it saved him." New

Freight Car that Disappeared.
In the recent railroad accident on the
Worcester, Nashua 4 Portland division of
the Boston & Maine at Eaat Barrlngton,
N. H. when an extra freight from Nashua
crashed head on Into an extra freight from
Portland that was waiting there to meet
It, s Boston 4 Maine car on the train
standing still disappeared and for hours
th effort of th railroad men to find It
were unavailing.
Th accident occurred a little after mid
night. From that time until daylight the
railroad telegraph operators along the line
from the scene of the wreck to Portland
mad th wire hpt in their efforts to trac
the missing car, as it was thought that It
might hav got uncoupled and Jumped from
the train, or had been left at some station.
The mystery of the lost car was solved at
dawn, when the car was found driven
completely Into a car of the Pennsylvania
railroad. The csrs had been telescoped In
such a way that by lantern light they
looked like one whole car, and had thu es
caped notice.
The telescoping of these oars was re
garded as remarkable, Inasmuch as they
were In th train standing still, go tre
