POWERFUL INTERESTS FURNISH SUPPORT Market Recovers I'resaattly, bat lader Heaeerea lelllag Prices Melt Away Rapldl) Keeling I .NetTeas All Day. NEW YC)RK, Dec. 13 The Stock ex rhsnge spent another bad half hour after the opening of the session totlsy. Prompt and vigorous measures were adopted oy powertui cupita.lets to avert a dlssster snd the headlong downward plunge of prices wss a linnet Immediately checked. A feverish, tone persisted during part of the spasmodic recovery end then the market settled down with a prlod of tranquil ad vance. The higher level thus attained had the effect of Inviting some renewed selling and the manner In which prices melted away under the light pressure revived the nervous feeling, which was only partly re lieved. The whole market showed a close sym pathy with Amalgamated Copper through out, and It was the determined support ot that stock aaalnst the onenlna pressure that gave force to the supporting measures eisewnere alter tne nrst plunge. Amalga mated Copper fell bark to last night's level for a moment after opening a point higher, but when It was perceived thst It would not yield below ( the whole msrket relnninded resllently. This stork sgaln demonstrated Its effective dominating power of the market In the last hour of the trading. .At the time a level of prices had been attained for the principal msrket lenders from I to 2 points above last night. Amalgamated Copper Itself had risen 54 over the final price of yreterday. It was Its nhrupt relapse of over 2 points which give the market Its sudden chill again. When the sudden reversal Jn the movement of Amalgamated Copper wss seen to be a false start, there were recoveries almost as sudden as the reaction. But this whs not entirely convincing to sentiment and the closing evinced considerable hesitation nnd uncertainty. The break at the opening cost the price level oulte generally from 1 to I points. There were much larger declines In some stocks, but they were not representative of the active list. Neither were thev retdored bv the subsequent rl!v. Lackawanna, lost In points In this way, Pullman 7 and Amer ican Express S. These were aenerallv recog nixed hs due to the rellnntilshment of meas ures used to force a few stocks of this chiss to an unwarrantably high level for effect on the speculation In the general market. The morning break hd the result of malting some prices lower than those of the low point on Thursday last, but It could not be said that the average level of the market fell 'below that point. It was rather evidently the Intention of the sup porters of the market that It should not. as that would have the effect of exhausting margins and uncovering stop-Ions orders which were not disturbed bv last week's raid, and thus bring an additional ava lanche of liquid-it Ion upon the market. It I evident that down to that level the weak holdings have been pretty well swept out of the msrket. General news features re ceived little attention, although the con tinued rise In sterling exchitnga caused some discussion of the probability of fur ther gold exports. Monev was very easv and was not a factor In the market. Bonds declined early, but showed some recovery. Total sales, par value, 17.240,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. The same ss mentioned yes terday, puckers wanted only the kinds that thev could use for their Christmas trade, so that ctmmon to m.dluin cattle were very slow and much lower. Quite a few cornfed steers were included In the receipts, but most of them wire onlv of fair quality. Buyers were very In different, as is snown by the fact that none of them went Into the yards until after 10 o'clock In the morning, and when they did start out they were very Indiffer ent. The late arrival of trains was partly responsible for the slow opening ol the market. Some of the best steers that hap pened to take the fancy of buyers were not far from steady, but they were hard to please, as the entile were too heavy, too thin or too something, so that most of them sold weak to a dime lower. Com mon and warmed up kinds were f.itrd to move at any figure. Not t-nougn western rangers arrived ti ls morning to make a. test of the market. Thn mm ket, tlnjtigh, could safely be quoted slow and weak. The cow market also suffered In bad shape, No liiisliieos was transacted until iitfer 10 o'clock, and then on a basis of about n 10c to 15c decline. Some of the choicer grades sold at right around steady prices, but aside from these the market was very slow and weak, the ivutest decline being on the medium grades. Hulls, veil I culvea unit stags were all alow and weak. There were quite a few Blocker (.nil feeders In the yards, hut the demand from the country this week has not liesn .i.r tlculaflv good, and as a result Kp. u'uior.4 were bearish, except on the better p-ndes, which sold about steady. Common t me dium grades nntl common light tc kors were slow and hard to sell at Htiy price. Heprecenliitive sales: AV.
