IVhm had a very bad break this morn

laverpoot waa easier, but thia waa In re

The bids sent out veeterday Induced free
selling both of wheat and corn. There
waa a better demand for wheat after the
liquidation had epent lt course, and when
Hie ahnrta atarted In to cover they run
values up faster than they had been put
down. December wheat dropped like a
ahot after the opening. hltlhig tl 07, a
break of 14 polr.ta. Important In Itself, but
when taken with the serious losses of yes
terday making alni'at a phenomenal break.
When the huvlnic commenced It started up

nearly double. Moat of the corn stopped
over for Inspection and then started nn Its
way to Galveston and New Orleans, thence
to IJverpool. Prices were strong early,
hut did not hold, though they rallied again
with wheat. Blda ara going out freely

with reluctance. December corn, 46945V4e

No change In the oats market. Com
mission houses seem to be plentifully sup
plied with resting orders and at times the
demand, while not urgent, on declines. Is
still enough to steady the market. w
still feel this market Is likely to be dull
and within narrow ranges.
Provision market steady and continues
to receive the support of the packers on
all breaks. Receipts of hogs are still large
and much larger than anticipated by the
packers. It la still a scalping market mid
likely to be so until receipts show some
letup.

CHICAOO, Dec. 1 Reports of Improved
demand for flour at Mltinennolln helped to
make a basis for a strong rslly In, wheat
prh es here today. At the rlose MT wheat
waa up Sc. compared with vestrday's
final figures. Corn Is up 4 4c "iats show
a gain of 4e. Prnvislonn are down 24fr

Wheat at the opening was weak. May
being unchanged to 4c lower at I.l"4t
III04. The effect of yesterday s heavy
liquidation waa In evidence early in the
day and with little support the market he
came still weaker. Hhnrts covered freely
on the slump, but before the decline was
checked May had sold off lo 3114. The
sensational break In Wall street 1 said
to have Induced considerable selling of
wheat here. Toward the middle of the
day. however, the wheat market rallied
sharply on liberal purchases by a leader of
the longs. An unconfirmed report of large
sale of flour at Minneapolis was responsi
ble for much of the late bullishness. An
other factor was the strength of wheat at
Ht. Loul. Shortly before the close May
reached 31.114, the highest point of
day. Final quotations were at 31.114
Clearances of wheat and flour were equrtl
to 2O-9H0 bu. Primary receipts were
bu.. compared with tl!,6o9 bu. a year ago.
Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago reported
receipts of 73 csrs, against W4 cars last
week and 644 cars a year ago.
Trading In corn waa on a liilrly generous
Scale and the market ruled firm the entire
day. Hhorta and commission houses were
the principal purchasers. Bullish advices
from Argentina also helped to support the
market. May opened a aliade to 4ft 4
higher at 444fr44V aold between 444c and
44444c and closed at 444-. Ixxal re
ceipts were 533 cars, with, ona of contract
grade.
Decreased receipts had a strengthening
Influence In the oats market. Trading wna
fairly active, with considerable covering
by snorts. May opened unchanged at ::04c.
sold between 304 snd 3i4c and closed at
34c. Local receipts were 81 cars.
Liquidation of scattered holdings caused
weakness In provisions. Continued heavy
receipts of hogi wr the main deprexslng
Influence. At the close May pork was o(T
l'ftl24e at 312 77412 .an. Lard was down
34! at 37.05. Ribs showed a loss of 2V5c
at 3K.H74J-pA.3i).

of the d.iy the tiniil market was as placid
aa a summer lake and the huving of stocks
waa going on as systematically as though
no disturbance luiii occurred. A review

euner rrom Iright at the crumbling ten
dency of prices or from necessity to repnv
borrowed money, the hnal prices of the day
by no means representea the prices at
which the largest part of the day's sales
were mad'.
There was a time during the market
when there w;is no apparent demand for
stocks at any price, orders to sell a few
hundreds of shares could only be executed
at concessions of lib 3 points from the pre

characterised the selling thtit the same

There was no such frantic fluctuations as
that in Northern Pacific on May 9, 1901,
owing to the corner which existed In that

market resembled those on that day and

drop from the high level of this week on
Monday of such figures as 24 for Amalga
mated Copper, 21 for Colorado Fuel. 1.04
for Tennessee Coal, 114 for United States
Steel preferred. 114 for Union Pacific, 144
for Sugur, 124 for tirooklvn Transit and
12 for St. Paul. The rapidity and violence
of this shrinkage of values nbundiiutly ac
counts for tin- fears of lenders of money
on stock coilat-ral and the urgent de
mands for addition! margins sent out by
brokers carrying stocks for customers.
There was the usual patherlng of "bar
gain hunters" on any severe break In prices
of stocks and there was evidence of In
vestment buying of a mor substantial and
sustained character. The first violent re
coveries were due to the scramble among
the triumphant bears to cover their short
contracts, hut the more substantial buying
sustained the market well to the strong
closing. The Improvement in the health
of the market by reason of sweeping out
of weak holders was obvious In the late
dealings. There was no serious considera
tion of news developments and the specu
lative Inflation and Its runture being held
to amply account for the break.
The bond market was affected In sym
pathy with stocks, but In less degree. Total
sales, par value, $9,211,000. United States
bonds wre unchanged on call.
Following were tne sales and range of
prices on the Stock exchange today:

Wool Market.
BOSTON, Dec. 8.-WOOL Trading- in the
wooi market Is quiet, due partly to the fact
that the .manufacturers have partly sup
plied their wants, but practically it is due
to the fact that the selections of desirable
wools are very much broken. The year
will apparently close with a small atock
on hand. Territory wools are firm, with
small holdings. Pulled wools are steady.
The foreign market maintains a firm tone.
