NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS Anglo-Buisian War Scare Eagei with Oreat Violence in Wall Street. - ARTIFICIAL VALUES ARE WIPED OUT Later Hnleter Counsels Prevail aad There la a HaM Recovery For eiaa Markets liDtr Less Than Amerlraa. NEW YORK. Oct. iT.-The war. scare raged with great violence in Wall street fur a time twday and ravaged the specula tive puce level to which the maraet had been lifted, tiut before the ciose ot tne ay quieter counsels prevailed and .the question began to be asked mhether In the event of aciual hostilities between Kunsla and Great Britain American lnveatmcnt In the proper ties would be hurt In the proportion indi cated by the headlong plunge, of prices dur ing the morning. The action of tne market in comparison with that of other securities murker looked as thouKh the oamage from the threatened clash would converge on American securities. The inference was plain that a weak technical position made this market acutely susceptible to a sudden unfavorable development. The condition of, the market has been pretty pls4n to careful observers for some time. The un eaHiness renardlnK the position which has grown up. with the evidences of top hesvl nesa for the lust few days, was aggravated by the warning offered by President Hill of the Great Northern In a quoted opinion on the course of speculation that operstors "hud lietter be a little cautious or they may get bumped." The war scare adminis tered the bump and It proved rather severe. A decline In a frw minutes of 2 to 3 points running generally through the active list was snfTlelent to throw out many specula tive holdings. The result was the uncover ing of stop-loss orders and the market broke thrnoRh all the artificial restraints sought to be opposed to the fall. The sains thing was apparent In the heaviness of the declines In stocks which have been most subjected to the booming of prices, al though the Intrlniflc value of the properties thus represented would be no more Im paired hy an Anlo-Russlan war than would any others on the list of securities. The most direct effect of the foreign situa tion upon our affairs was on the additional engagements of gold for export to Paris The Immediate crisis In International af fairs cannot be held responsible for this, which Is In preparation for a future. Rus sian loan In the regular prosecution of the war with Japan. But the Influence unon the local money situation Is of Immediite Importance, 'with the Interior demand still In force Reassuring advices concerning the prospect for an Anglo-Russian settle ment were of no Influence for a time, but the market made a substantial rally In the ouleter mood of the later trading and the losaefl were largely repaired. The bull con trol was ngsln asserted snd the market showed the relief afforded bv the shaking out of unwleldly speculative accounts. United States Steel preferred rallied poorly and Ontnrlo Western Buffered from an alleged hitch In the New Haven control movement. The closing was generally firm and active. Chicago being quoted weak to a dime lower. At this point there was no great change In prices except perhaps on com mon kinds, and the bulk of the offerings wae soon disposed of. There were no strictly choice cornfed steers on sale, but the market was steady on such as were offered. All the packers are anxious for cornfeds that are at all good and as a result everything answering to that description changes hands without a great deal of trouble. There were quite a few western range beef steers on sale and the market on de sirable grades could safely be quoted steady. As high as $4.26 waa paid for a good bunch. The commoner gradeu of west ern beef, of which Ihere lias been a big supply all the week, waa rather slow and, If anything, a trifle easier. There were not many cowe on sale, and as all the packers wanted a few the mar ket wae fairly active and generally steady. Some of the better grades in fact sold at prices that looked a little stronger. The same as yesterday, the market wna rather uneven, which ot course made some sales look beter than others. As buyers took hold quite freely ot all kinds It waa not long before a clearance was made. Bulls, veal calves and stags commanded lust about steady prices. The supply of stockere and feeders was not very large this morning and desirable grades In particular were scarce. The de mand from the country yesterday showed a big Improvement, over 100 cars of cattle being shipped out. That went a long way toward cleaning up the supply In the handa of speculators, so that they were all anx ious this morning forjrood cattle and paid fullv stesdv prices. When It came to the commoner grades, though, the market wae a little slow, with prices steady to a shade lower. Representative sales: BEEF STEKIt". Ki Av. Ft. Ne Av. At this market salesmen soon made up their minds that there was no way of preventing the brsak In prices, and as a result the market wo fairly active and everything sold In good season Very little change took place In the market from start to finish. The big bulk of the hots sold at $5. with a few of the commoner loads under that. The choice loads sold largely ut $5.02 nnd $5.0i. It took aomething very choice, though, to sell for more than $5, as packers were willing to pay for their droves and no more. Today's decline take the marltrt. back to about where It waa the first of lost week. 15 steers 1 steer.., 1 heifer. 1 cow.... 1 cow.... 1 steer... 2 cows. 14 steers. .102-1 .1103 J. 1 COW 1040 3 cows 080 11 feeders.. 87 Adnmson 68 steers.. ..lino 3 4" IV steers.. The supply of desirablo klllern waa not large, however, while all the packers seemed to have 'liberal orders to fill. The nmrket was perhaps not quite i.s active -as on soma days, but the prices paid allowed little change from yesterday. Wethers sold its high as $4.25 nnd ewes of only fair quality brought $3.76. There was also no quotable change in the prices paid for lambs and most everything that would do tc. kill was out of first hands In good season. The demand for feeders continued aa brisk as ever and the market could safely be cioutcd steady and active. Some sales In fact looked a little stronger.
