blegram to The Bee.) A desperate revolu
tionary attempt has been made to liberate
625 political prisoners now Incarcerated In
the dungeon of the Peler Paul fortress.
The plan was to poison the soup rrgu
larly aerved to all guards and warders in
the early morning, and then to throw i.pi n
the prison doors as soon as ths custodians
were lying helpless from the effects of the
poison.
The plot was discovered by chance In
time to be frustratd. It had been so elab
orately planned that the revolutionists had
every prospect ot succesa. Several arrests

My Dear Mra. Decker: I wish we might
have the business and social aide of tha
next biennial more Clearly separated. Per
haps It would be better to say mnigla them
mure so that we might have fewer fune
tlons, and more genuine social intercourse.
It Is a great tax upon a woman a ingenuity
and strength to adjust herself to the proper
wearing apparel where business and social
affairs occur on the same day.
There might be a play day following the
regular working sessions of the General
Federation. Cajie preced.ng and one follow
ing It more time la wanted for social af
fairs. Then those who so desired, or those
to whom an extra day a expense and recep
tion gowns are an item, could go home.
The social side of the biennial is an Im
portant one. and all olub women appreciate
the hospitable spirit that prompts the en
tertainment given club women at the meet
ings of the General Federation, but the
finest social intercourse among women at
tuned to life's liner things may exalt every
session or the General Federation.
It does not seem a consistent thing In a
great body of women organised for serious
purposes, trying to establish Itself as a
force for world betterment to make a dress
parade of lis meetings. It does not seem
the correct thing for women to appear upon
the platform gowned so elaborately that
they Jar one's sense of the eternal fitness
of things when they speak on a serious
subject
It is true that Emerson said, "A great
soul has nothing to do with consistency."
but one who loves the great philosopher
may not agree with him always. A great
soul must tie consistent to reach fullness
of power.
A great organisation must be consistent
If It is to become a permanent force or
power in the working world.
The General Federation Is supposed to
be truly democratic in Its scope. It Is
hardly that, when the pace that Is set In
social affairs, Is representative of the class
that devotes Its time, energv and what
mentality It may possess, to society In tho
limited sense. A devotion to society In Its
higher meaning of humanity Is supposed to
dominate the General Federation.
Cultivated people rive a fine social dis
tinction to any assembly of which thev may
be a part, but they do not care for display.
I.et simplicity be the keynote of the ao'-lnl
side of the. meetings of the General Federa
tion, for only In the atmosphere of sim
plicity sre the finer Foclal nnd spiritual
forces generated. In this atmosphere the
spirits of club women will be In harmony
with the serious things In life.
To promote the things that make for a
higher civilisation Is the business of the
General Federation.
Let the point of social contact at the
biennial be upon the plane of Interest nnd
enthusiasm for the splendid purposes of the .
organisation.

monious dress is a mighty and mooted one,"
says Mra. Decker. "I think it was that
famous orator, John B. Gough, who told
of his great mortification, after one of his
addresses, because a woman who came to
greet him remarked: 'Oh, Mr. Gough, what
a lovely diamond ring you have I saw It
sparkle all the time you were speaking.'
Mr. Gough threw away the diamond."

It generally does, Mrs. Philip Carpenter of
New Tork City will be the next pics. dent
of the New York State Federation of Clubs
Instead of Mrs. Dore Lyon, who, as presi
dent of the New York City Federation, has
had a large following In her candidacy for
that office. During the past month, since
the clubs have begun to resume their meet
ings, Mrs. Carpenters friends seem to be
Increasing and the outcome of the election
will be watched with Interest by club
women all over the country.
Mrs. Sarah Piatt Decker recently mads
the following statement regarding tho
withdrawal of women from clubs In obedi
ence to the mandate of Mrs. Mark Baker
Eddy: "We have not felt any large dimin
ution In the Federation on that score. Tho
real, genuine club woman will stay In tho
Club, as she believes that the club was
formed for a good purpose, and that they,
stand for the Idea of faith in unity and for
good civics. The club movement la not an
evanescent thing, and It has purpose back
of It"
The Current Topics department of the
Woman's 'club will meet at 2:30 o'clock
Tuesday afternoon, Mlsa Joule McHugh to
lead. During the business session plans
will be made for the social affairs thut
have been decided upon for the winter.

The English Literature department met
Wednesday afternoon, Miss Caswell giving
an Interesting talk on "Modern Novelists, "
which subject forms the course of study
for the year. The authors whose work will
be taken up are: Elisabeth Cleghorn Gas
kell, George Meredith, Thomas Hardy, Rob
ert Louis Stevenson and Rudyard Kip
ling. The Dundee Woman's club met Wednes
day afternoon, Mrs. Ellery R. Hume being
hostess. Mrs. J. O. Yelser conducted the
current topics review, city, state, national
and International topics being taken up.
Mrs. D. D, Johnson led the lesson. Two
new members were elected to the club.
At tho meeting of the musical depart
ment October 28, a woman's chorus will
be organlied. Mra. G. W. Noble, assist
ant leader of the department, will con
duct tha chorua. The musical work to bo
studied la the "Enchanted Swan," by Carl
Rdnecke. This was recently given by the
Tuesday Musical of Denver, and Is a beau
tiful composition. It is proposed to give
this work before the Woman's club of
Omaha aome evening this winter. As this
chorua will do work representative of the
musical department, only thosu belonging
to the department or to the Woman's club ,
can become members of the chorus. Ail
those who are Interested In this work are
requested to give their names to Mrs.
Noble at the next meeting of the mUBlcal
department on October 28.
