MINNEAPOLIS BULLS SET STRONGER PACE O-aika Market Best for Cash Grain Cora Prospects Good Old . Steady CosBsnerrlnl Rcwi ma Gossip. OMAIIA. Oct. a, 1904. The grain market presents many Inter, eating feature. The demand (or Hour hows soma cessation, but the demand tor cash wheat baa not begun to fall off. The railroads cannot bring the grain from tna west last enough anu It Is estimated that Washington ami Oregon wheat to the amount of many millions of bushels Is yet to come forward. Minneapolis, despite large, and accumulating stocks. Is strong and one of the Arm spots of the entire Hat. Omaha prices are at a premium and today there la no better market for Im mediate delivery than this. The specula tive element Is somewhat at sea regarding the situation and from the character of the fluctuations It looks very much as If the traders did not care to be either way very long getting In and out with re newed agility- The fact has developed that John W. Gates, the famous plunger, and Armour are arrayed against each other on the December wheat future. Gates with the horns and Armour with the shaggy hide. It Is one of the things that the would-be predictor can never tell to a certainty the exact position taken by Ar mour, Valentine, the "Armour" on the board, today may be offering wheat In Ko.OOO-busliel lots today and at the same ttme picking It up through his brokers here and there around the room. Gates Is said to be carrying a long line of 20,000.000 bushels. On the developments of the see eon Gatee' position Is certainly tenabl and his opponent always tenacious. Liver pool was easier. Southwestern receipts were light. It is claimed by some that prices today are on an Importing basis from Manitoba and almost there on the Argen tine crop. Still, speculators are bidding It up because the cash Is wanted and the horts are nervous. NEWYORK STOCKS AND BOND S Xarket Eailj in tht Day it Actire, Irreg nlai and Higher, ADVANCE IN UNION PACIFIC RENEWED Westers Stocks Loe Hearty All tae Rise Owlagr to Front Taking Darlag; tke Last Hoar. NEW TORK, Oct. 21. There waa a re vival of ypocuiailve excitement In slocks touay. Theie was some uncertainty as to wheiner the mid-week reaction had been decisively checked by yesterday s late rally, but as soon as this was seen to be the case the trading bioke Into great in.mHti n The rise was uneven, one point and then another being aflected, but la me cuu.t. vi the oay's very large dealings practically all the stocks came In for their share of the advance. The tide of the market was so strong that room tradeis became very bold In their operations and dealt In prac tically unlimited amounta of the violently active stocks. The dimensions of such operation la Indicated by the bid made dur ing the spurt In Pennsylvania for any part of 60.000 ahares at 137. This kind of trad ing is made on quick turns for very small price changes, and the trader Is In and out of the market many times on a movement, thus adding enormously to the aggregate of the total dealings without, perhaps, ef fecting any actual transfer of holdings at all. The renewed advance In Union Pacific, after a period of hesitation, had, as a more substantial baals, the consideration of the details of the annual report, which was re garded as testifying to the extraordinary prosperity and strength of that system. These special movements had a far-reaching sympathetic effect through the list. It would be tedious to attempt to detail the day's movement otherwise, as they em braced practically every part of the list. The United States Steel stocks shared at one time In the day's upward movement, but they were late In getting smarted and did not bold well. Amaliramated Copper was affected by disappointment that the dividend had not ben raised on yester rtay'a declaration. A sharp break In Pressed Steel Csr was due to rnmn-s th't dividend hopes were to be disappointed. The specu lation was fostered bv the extremely easy money market, ouotstlons belna; marked down for both call and time loans. t The great volume of the room trading msde the pro"t taklnc In the Inst hour quite heavy. Both Chicago and Kansas City were quoted about steady and buyers here took hold fairly well and most everything was disposed of In good season. The quality of tne onerings was ramer common, wrucn. of course, had a tendency to make packers Indifferent. There were no choice corn-fed steers on sale this morning, but the few oommon loads that were offered changed hands quite freely at steady urlces. All the packers seemed to be willing to take the corn cattle, so It was an easy matter to dispose of them at steady prices. The demand for corn-feds all the week has been In excess of the supply, and as a result an active and strong market has been experienced and prices are quite a little higher than they were a week ago. There were just a few oars or western range beef steers In the yards and they sold at lust about steady prloea aa oom Dared with yesterday. The same as with corn-fed steers ths general tendenoy of prices has been upward this week and prices hsva advanoed about 100200. "The supply here has been limited and particu larly nave good catue Deen scarce, as tne hulk of the offerlnars has been made ud of common to medium grades. The cow maruet toaay waa not aa orisg aa It might have been. The market eased ort yesterday on tne rate arrivals ana tne rices raid this morning were not a gret eal different from yesterday's close, but they were a uuie-jower man yesterday mornlnsr. With this decline there Is not a great deal of change In prices from the olose of last week. Bulls, real calves ana stags sola at about steady prices. The bet'.er arrades or stookers ana feeders sold about, steady this morning, even though it was FTiaay. out anytning out cnoice cattle hayd to be shaded a little to move them. The bulk of the general run of hogs went at $5.10 and S124, with the better grades selling from $5 15 to $3.20. , Today's advance makes the market about Sc higher than It was a week ago and about lc higher than on Tuesdny of this week, which wss the low point. The market on fat sheep and lambs ruled active and strong from start to finish and some sales were a little higher. As com. pared with last Friday the better grades are right around a quarter higher and the general market could safely be quoted 150 8&o higher for the week. As high as $4 was paid this morning for some wethers and yearlings mixed. No choice lambs were of fered.
