If we can only have a few weeks of moderately cold weather corn in Nebraska will Insure all prosperity lor tne ne-'.i year. There Is no new corn coming to market. Because of the shortage of wheat and because of the same condition In other countries regarding some other grains we are going to do an enormous toreign business In corn, oats and barley. Improved demand f"T cash wheat In all domestic grain markets was largely the cause of sn advsnre of ll0 to 2c in speculative wheat prices here to day. Poor grading of newlv marketed spring whest was snotber powerful Influ ence. At e riowe December corn was up HfaH and nats a shade. Provisions show a gain of MQific. The strength of the wheat market devel oped after a weak opening. Under the In fluence of heavv northwestern receipts and lower prices at Liverpool, Initial quotations showed a considerable decline, December being down c, at 31.HV o 81.HV May was oft 4iac to iifiUkc. at 31 lfH to 61.10. From the Up of the gong until the laat minute of trading there was sn exceptional demand for the December delivery. As a result the market gained In strength until within the laat fifteen minutes, when a slight recession occurred on profit-taking. The brisk demand for December caused active covering of May, and this month also showed a good gain, although the ad vance was not so shsrp as In the nearby option. Klements that entered decisively into the situation later In the dny were the strength of cash wheat In all markets and reports of damage br Hesstnn flies to win ter wheat In Missouri. De creased primary receipts were nn additional hull factor. December opened HVc to S" He lower, at 47c to 47'4c; sold between 47V4e and 4fe, and closed 4SHc. Local re ceipts were 131 cars, none of contract grade. The oata Tnarket was Influenced almost exclusively by the sctlon of other grains. The sentiment was weak early, but a firmer tone developed later In the day. A good cash demand has had a beneficial effect on optional trading. December opened Hil to SSc lower, at 27 to 53c, sold up to r8Sti28He. snd closed at 28c. Local re ceipts were 224 cars. Provisions were strong. NEW YORK, Oct. 18. A we l-controlled reaction was the result of today's stock market, due to the selling -to take profits on the rise. The control was maltalned by the lifting of various epecial stocks as a cover to the realising sales. The market was kept Irregular, rather than weak in this way, hut the Influence of the advances on sentiment wsa not so rffectlv as yesterday, and there wne more disposition left for reaction. The reaction of yesterday's late- trading was a predisposing cause to this view. The result whs a general conviction this morn ing that a general distribution of ho'dlngs had been effected yesterdny from the strong speculative hands which have fos tered the growth of the pretwnt bull mar ket to the weakrr hands of the new cla-s of buyers who have been attracted by the Inter singes of the advance, and who made their first appearance In any considerable number yesterday. The consequence was a more spotted market and a decline In speculative r-nthuslasm. The dealings fell Into a state of decided dullness at various times during the day and the rush to buy. which carried prices comprehensively upwards, was not In evidence at any time during the day. The profit taking was not precipitate, snd was not carried far at, the expense of values. Any advance in price was taken advantage of to sell stocks, but the- pres sure relaxed at a recession in prices to last night's level or below. The conse quence was that no great Inroads In prices were caused by the profit taking. The policy was reverted to of shifting operating from one prominent slock to another to sustain prices. In the first hour the stocks chosen were Steel pre ferred, Missouri Pacific, , Reading and Erie. Later supporting operations cen tered on 8t. Paul, while the early favor ites were more or 'ess reactionary, es- rooinlly 1 nlted States Steel preferred. The absorption of Missouri Pacific was on a very large scale, and the motive offered for buying was that the stock bad not moved commensurately with the riso In the general market. The rise In Sugar was 'in the face of competitive price reductions for the product and the excited demand for copper failed to bene fit Amalgamated Copper. The news of the day awakened !lttle Interest In market circles and little attention was devoted to the record of the tnpe as affording evi dence of the public Interest of absenta tion from dealings. London was a seller here, and ths dis count rate of the Bank of Germany showed the effect of the higher bank dleount rate In a cash gain of 312.555.tmO repaying of loans to the amount of 315.130,000 and a note contraction of $21,610,000. . Sterling at continental points In conse quence recovered. .The sub-treasury took a considerable sum from the banks here today, thus reversing the recent course of the balances. Money rates, however. Were unchanged. The stock market closed rnther easy. Realizing In specii'atlve bond 'ssurs mada the bond mrk?t Irregulnr. Trading here was rather slow, as salesmen did not like the Idea of tuklng the prices offered, but as there was no prospect of an Im provement the hog kept moving toward the scales and a good rlsrance was made by the middle of the forenoon. The bulk of the general run of hogs went at 84.9S and 84.974, with some of the commoner kinds under 34.95. The choice light and butcher weights sold largely from 35.00 to 35.05, with a top at 35.16. The top price was paid for a very fancy load weighing 223 Ilia. They were, generally considered the best load of hogs that has been here in some time past. Representative stiles: o. Wt. 8. Pr.
