Oct. 17-Th animation which grew up In the speculation in the latter part of last week showed further In creese today. From start to finish of th session of the Stock exchange there was practically no cessation of the active busi ness on the floor, which taxed the resources for recording transactions at times and kept the faculties of the brokers at a ten sion throughout the dey. Large crowds were trying to do business at the same time at the poets where the favorite active stocks were dealt In. While great con fusion was apparent at all time the rec ord of the day's results shows that the market was under Intelligent direction snd that the largest operations were conducted according to a fixed plan. The opportune ness with which the heaviest buying and the strongest advances occurred, with the most important selling at other points, was evidence of the skilful leadership existing. The dsy's movements, to that extent, had an artificial character But the speculative following In the msrket has evidently lost much of Its dread of this experienced leadership snd srtiftclal device In the msr ket which hsve been plsln to be seen throughout the long advance which pre ceded the present growing Interest. Last week's buoyant close gave general hopes of a large increase in such new orders and the market aulckly demonstrated that the hope waa not disappointed. The selling; out to tske speculative profits on the sflvan tsgeous terms afforded by this new demand was equally a matter of course. The new buvlng csme from msny different quarters snd an Important proportion of It came by the cable. The moat notable buying and the greateat strength were in United States Steel preferred and to a less extent In the common In Reading. In Missouri Pacific. Amalgamated and less effectively In Penn sylvania and Erie. Next to these points of strength the most notable feature In the market was the manner In which the sell ing to take profits held bark and even de pressed Union Pselflc. Southern Pacific. Rock Island. St. Psul. Baltimore Ohio and Norfolk aV Western. Louisville dt Nash ville made no such demonstration as on Saturday and after Its opening advance of l7i It wa under pressur throughout. There was no specific effect from the news de velopments of the day. except a they of fered nothing to disturb the confidence which ha reached the proportlona of en thusiasm with th Outburst of the specula tive spirit. Money continued easy and no one was heard to express a fear that It would not do so Indefinitely. Railroad offi cials expressed themselves In sanguine terms over the outlook for traffic. Sugar wa marked down and copper was marked up. Sterling was strong and the continental markets were somewhat disturbed by the Russian reverses. The profit taking hsd Its greatest effect In the last hour of the market and made the closing Irregular and considerably below the best price. Brtnds were strong. Total ssles, par Value. tl0.000.000. Chicago had 11.000 head and price there ruled steady to 100 lower, and the condition at thla point were much the same. The quality ot th bulk of th cattle was rather Inferior, which helped to weaken the market . . - There were only about a halt dosen car of corn fed ateer on sale and the market could safely te Quoted active and ateady. A high a 86.20 was paid for a prim bunch of Hereford, which la the top price for a load in some tlma past They were bet ter, though, than anything; that ha been ofTered in a long time. There were about 100 car of western rang beef steers on sal, and with th Inferior quality and the unfavorable re ports from Chicago the market wa rather alow, with th tendency of price down ward. The general run of cattl cold right around a dime lower, though some thing choice may have been about steady. It wa rather lata before th bulk of the offering were disposed of, a buyer were slow about taking hold and salesmen were slow to cut loos at th prices of fered. - About aevcnty-flv car of -cow were In cluded In the offering and the market seemed , to harather uneven all around. In some places It wa steady and In other It wa undoubtedly weak to a dime lower. A a general thing, the kind that suited them sold about steady, while other were weak to 10c lower and rather slow. Bulls, veal calve and stags did not ahow a great deal of change. Th msrket on atocker and feeders wa quit brisk, with prices about ateady on anything at all desirable. Anything a lit tle lacking in quality, though, was neglected and prices on such kind were safely a dim lower. Th bulk of th good cattl wer disposed or at a reasonably early hour, but it waa 1st befor a clearance of all kinds wa mad. Represen tatlvs sale: BEEP STEERS. No. 44 14 4 1 At. Pr. No. Av.
