Stimulated by re ports of covert purchases by a prominent trader who was ostensibly an open sel.er, the wheat market today turned from weak ness to strength. At the close Decoiiuer wneat was up c. May snowed a gain of 1'olHc. Corn is oown a shade and oats and previsions are about unchanged. At the opening sentiment in the wheit pit was rather pesrlsh. The cause of the cusler feeling was heavy shipments from Argentine, liberal rfceipts In the northwer-t and weakness in foreign grain markets. Initial quotations on De cember wre a shade higher to Mi'aMiC lower, at JUlVtfl.llV M ty was c higher to ic lower, at Jl.kVul-Lftfc. After touch ing SI. U! December steadily declined to W.il'a, while May sold off to Jl.ll4. The main feature of trading was a seile of operations by a ader of the bull crowd, 'lhe belief was general that although this operator was an open re'.ler, his pur chases thro.igh brokers more than offset the sales. I'nder a fair demand December advanced to 1.12Val 13 and May to ll.U-V The market held tirm the latier part of the dav, although tlia advance was not miin talned. Final quotations on December wera at 1 12S. May cloard at l.l3'fel 18v. Clearances of wheat and flour were eqiial to 112,200 bu. Primary receipts were 1,351, ii"0 bu., compared with 1,113,200 bu. a year ago.- tx ports of wheat and flour for the week, os shown by Bradstreet a, were cquaj to l.ll2.(X)0 bu. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago reported receipts of 9&i cars, sgalnst 6$i cars last week and 719 cars a year ago. An easier tone prevailed In the corn mar ket early In the day, the causes being lib eral receipts and an a'leged bearish Mis souri crop report. According to the figures of the Missouri crop official the total yield of corn In that state would be 17.0nO,(M bu. in excees of the government estimate. Later In the day an announcement was made that the official MlssourM eport had not yet been published. This denial re sulted In a considerable rally' in prices. The market weakened again; )iowever, on rrallr.lng, the close being easy. December opened unchanged to c lower, at itirit 6c, sold between BOe and Blo and o'.osed at W''&'fto'so. Local receipts were 162 cars, with 11 of contract grade As a result of the liberal new crop sen timent In the oats pit was bearish. A fea ture of the trading was fair purchase of May by the pit crowd. December opened VtiC lower, at 30c, ranged between 3014c and 3(sV.c. and closed at 30SC. Local re ceipts were 128 cars. 1 luviffiuiin were nrm. nigner prices iur lings and decreasing stocks of provisions were the bull factors. There was con tinued liquidation of October pork and ribs, while shorts covered quite freely In lard. At the close January pork waa oc higher, at 113.12V. Lard was up 2V4C, at J7.40V4. Ribs were up 2V4c at J6.83. Estimated receipts for tomorrow: Whett, 68 cars; corn, 153 cars; oats, 146 cars; hogs. 8,000 head. The leading futures ranged as follows: Artlcles.l Open. Hlgh.l Low. ANOTHER RISE IN UNION PACIFIC Vnlted States Steel Preferred Mron and Baylags la In Enorsnoos Tola me Bonds Strong; oa Wide Demand. NEW YORK. Sept. 80. t'nlted States Steel bore practically the whole of the brunt of sustaining the price level In the stock market up to lute In the day, when there was a revival of the rumor that a settlement had been arrived at as to the manner of distribution of assets of the Northern Securities company. A Jump of 4 points In Northern Securities on the curb resulted and I'nlon Pacific rose In sym pathy on the Stock exchange. The west ern railroad stocks came into belter de mand after that and threw off the dragging Influence which held them in check earlier in the day. Official disclaimers of the rerortd settle, ment of the Northern Securities ault did not seem to alter the effect of the-report. The buying of United States Steel pre ferred wss in enormous volume. The Indi cations that some of the demand - wss coming from Influential banking bouses added to Its sentimental Influence.. It was obvious that the strength of United States Steel preferred was availed of to a very large extent to take profits all through the general list and with the exception of the New York public service stocks and a few other specialties there were no im portant advances until the late rise. In Union Pacific released the market from' some part of the restraint upon It. -- The tranquility of the money market lessened the Influence of a forecast of the currency movement which gave promise of a decidedly unfavorable bank atatement, although there was some hesitation in the stock market when the estimates of ttie cash movement first made their appear ance. The subtreasury had tsken from the banks up to Thursday night $fl.790.or.i and something more than $1,000,000 addi tional Is estimated to have gone out on tho direct movement. An expansion In the loan Item would not be a surprise, although the extent to which the trust companies have been taking over loans from the bnnks will effect the strength. The strength of the Pacifies was taken advantage of like that In United Strifes Steel preferred to sell stocks nt other points, and the market closed rather Ir regular. Bonds were strong on n widely dis tributed demsnd. Total sales, par value, $6,350,000. United States bonds were un changed on call. Other buyers 879 Total 2,847 6,102 9.896 CATTLE There was a rather liberal run of cattle here this morning for a Friday, and with unfavorable repurts from other points the market was very slow and weak except on strictly choice grades. For tne month, as will be seen from the table above cattle supplies have been light, though for this week they have been heavy. As compared with September. 19u3, there Is a decrease of about 14,000 head, and os compared with September, 1902, there la a loss of about 47,000 head. When compari sons are made with September, 1912. How ever, there Is an Increase of over 18,000 bend. Cornfed steers were very scarce this morning and in fact there waa nothing on sale to make a test of the market. It would be snfe, however, to quote desirable grades steady, aa the supply of that ciass has been too small all the week. Common stuff, or such as comes in competition with westerns, is of course more or less neg lected and perhaps a little lower than a week ago. There were quite a few western grass beef steers in sight this morning, and while something strictly choice may have been steady, others were very dull and weak. As high as J4.10 was paid for some choice heavy cattle. Trading was very slow on the common and medium kinds, with prlres unevenly lower, as packers seemed to have all that class of cattle on hand that they needed for their Immediate requirements. The cow market was In bad shape. The better grades changed handH without a great deal of difficulty at prices not much liferent from yesterday, but when It came to the medium kinds, and particularly to canners, there was almost no market at all. It was not a question of price on can ners, but one of getting a bid. Buyers seemed to be filled up owing to the enor mous receipts that arrived all the week, and consequently they wanted no freh supplies unless they could get them at an extremely low figure. Bulls, veal calves and stags were all dull and weak. Oood heavy feeders sold freely enough this morning at fully steady prices and some sales looked strong. Other kinds of atockers and feeders, however, were dull and weak, the same as is generally the ease on a Friday. Representative sales: COWS. No. A. Pr. No. At. The market h re w s rather slow but strong to be bljftier, ih greatest advance being on the choice grades and particularly on the choice Uiht and butcher weights. Packers were up parently much opposed to paying the ad vanced prices and as a result tnev were slow to bid the market, which delayed t.ie ciose to quite an extent, some or the trains were late in arriving, which also held back thv market. The bulk of the early arrivals, though, was dl?rosed of In fairly good season. Heavy hog srld largely around J65, with the common k nds from that down. Medium and mixed I mri went around Jn.70 nnd choice light and butcher weights from 86 75 to IS 81. There was no particulir change In the latter end of the morke'. at least I e Tore noon, at which time all the early arrivals had been disro-ed of. Thrre were annut nine cats that came In alter that t'.me and. as Is generally the ce with lato arrivals, they oold hardly as well as the early onea. Representative rales: no. a. St. pr. ( 8'1 SHEEP There was a :ibral run of sheet) in sight this morning, which makes tho receipts for the week, and also for tha month of September, very liberal ns com pared with previous seasons. The gain over September of 1903 amounts to more than 40,1100 head. In September, 1902, re celpts amounted to 285,867 held, which wni the previous high mark for that month, but those figures nre exceeded this yrar by over 24.000 head. The tablo of recclpU above will show the exact figures. The market this morning was rather slow, but still prices on desirable grides of fat sheep and lambs did not show a great deal of changa from ycsttrdiy. Com mon kinds may nave been a little slow, with the feeling weak, ns the big bu'k of the offerings was cf rather inferior quil ity. The most of the good stuff sold In fnir!y good season, but it was lato before tne commoner kinds were all out of Iir;t linmla. Tho feeder market also showed but little change from yesterday. The bft rr gradea of both sleep nnd lambs sold nt steady prices without any trouble, but of course common stuff was neglected to some ex tent, with the feeling wenk.
