Notable Invention br Which Little
Piece of Iron Do the Work
of a Dosen Men.
Kansas City is now In full possession of
an Inventor whose Invention Is more thun
likely to make both himself and the town
famous. His name Is John S. Lockwood,
and the product of his Inventive genius is
magnetic brake for use on everything
that runs on wheels.
The brake was given a third and final
test by the Metropolitan last week and a
highly successful test It was. The car,
equipped with Mr. Lockwood' Invention,
started out from the barn at Ninth and
Washington streets, and hit a merry clip
for the steep grades out In the south part
of the city.
People on the streets must have thought
It a trolley party, for the car was packed
to overflowing with excited and enthus
iastic stockholders In the Lockwood ven
ture. Mr. Charles Frit, the Metropolitan's
chief electrician, was acting as motorman
and Mr. Lockwood and his assistant mnda
capable hosts.
The car wound Its way out Troost ave
nue to the race track, returning by the
Holmes street line, a route that took In
a goodly number of steep descents. Every
variety of stop was made with the mag
netic brake, each one quickly and surely.
Not even when the stop was most Instan
taneous did the passengers experience the
slightest Jo'.t, and the absence of grinding
wheels and groaning rods almost led to
the belief that the car had stopped of Its
own accord.
The simplicity of the brake's construction
Is one of Its greatest advantages. There
Is no great mass of metal, no complicated
system of cegs and wheels. A couple of
iron shois, about the size of a man's hand,
resting a quarter of an inch above the
rails, and another like pair the same dis
tance from the wheels, did the work. It al
most defied imagination to look at those
small piece of Iron and grasp the fact
that through them the heavy car could
be brought to a dead halt.
The principle of the Invention 1 alsj
simple enough; that Is, after Mr. Lock
wood explained It. Any Iron bar coiled
with Insulated copper wire through which
an tlectrlc current can be made to flow,
Instantly become a magnet, and attracts
Iron, steel or anything of a similar natuie.
Around this Idea the Lockwood brake la
built. A core of Iron, wrapped with cop
per wire, and Incased In a castlron Jacket
Is suspended between the trucks about a
quarter of Inch above the rails. In
the Jacket there are two separate and
distinct magnets, the lower giving magnetic:
effect at the rail, the upper operating on
a plunger, thereby setting the wheel brakes.
Both are operated simultaneously, however,
the motorman having complete pontrol of
the magnetic current by means of a small

Be Plenty.
That we eat a great doal too much I
an old story. Very few people seriously
dispute the abstract proposition, and yet
not many go systematically to work to re
duce their consumption of food. Such in
cidents as the stock yards strike, causing
a rise In the price of meat, and the feur
that a still greater Increase may be in
prospect, lend additional Interest to th
Inquiry, and a few turn to vegetable diet,
but expect to eat as much as before. Most
people do not Ilka the Idea of restricting
the pleasure of the palate from motive
of economy, and will only do so In case of
absolute necessity.
Still the advocates of less food contlnua
their researches, and they claim to hav
discovered that not only can we subsist on
a half or a third of the food we now con
sume, and get Increased health and strength
from the smaller quantity, but that wo
may thereby Increase the pleasure of eat
ing. As the result of recent experiments
made with half the usuul amount of food,
or less, It Is claimed that efficiency was in.
