This Is the ticket sn ostensible demo
cratic convention nominated amid scenes
of riotous disorder at ihe Jacksonlnn dun
j Saturday night. The fact that the leg illty of
the convention Is pending In the courts
had no effect upon the majority of hc dele
gates, and a motion to adjourn until Tues
day night after Judge Day has made a
decision was tabled by a vote of 80 to SO.
Matters throughout were sadly mixed and
vexed by a display of much Inharmonlo
feeling and C. J. Smyth had a hard even
ing's work keeping the stmosphere below
fever temperature. It was shown that Hip
pie's friends had calculated correctly In
supposing that a big majority of the dele.
nolly and P. C. Heafey withdrew their
names, giving the reason as the illegality
of the body.
Genesis of the- Convention.
The convention had been called by a
small number of the city central com
mittee, who simply ordered the delegates
of the last munlclpnl convention to recon
vene, and. without permitting proxies and
voting absentees by ward majorities make
the nominations. The water board question
was the only one really Involved, there
being no contest for school board places.
Inasmuch as the last city convention wus
strongly for Ed Howell and nominated
him for mayor, and Dr. Hippie has been
closely Identified with the Howell-Herdmnn
faction. Commissioner Connolly procuifd
gn alternative writ of mandamus directing
the city committee to reconvene and call
primary elections to glvee the democrats
voters a chance to express their choice
for water commissioner. This the city
committee has not done and the hearing is
postponed until Tuesday.
Lysle Abbott and about twenty others
absolutely refused to vote or participate In
the convention last night. Abbott, In a
fiery speech, denounced the proceedings as
undemocratic and predicted a mass con
vention If the Jacksonian crowd persisted
In forcing their methods.
Abbott's Appeal tm Reason.
"God knows the split Is bad eno
among the democratlo party In Dougloa
county at this time," said Abbott, speak
ing to a question of personal privilege. "I
am opposed to the action of the city com
mittee. Democrats all over the city are
protesting against the way this conven
tion was oallod and it will take little more
to cause a mass meeting and the nomina
tion of an Independent democratlo candi
date who will run like wildfire if this
scheme Is carried out. I want to see a
majority for our nominees for president,
for congress, for governor "
But he got no further Just then. "We
ain't got no candidate for governor," yelled
a First ward delegate, while J. J. O'Connor
rose to a point of order am! tried to shut
Abbott off. An uproar arose and Dr. Hippie
quelled It by moving that Abbott be allowed
to finish his remarks. Abbott did so and
auld he wouldn't vote.
The democratlo hosts had evidently an
ticipated a hot time, - for the hall was
packed and several had to be kindly but
forolbly ejected because they had prepared
to be thoroughly In sympathy with what
ever might happen, not wisely, but too
veil. All expectation were realized as

that he refused to stand as a candidate h" t
fore the convention.
Proceedings of the Convention.
C. S. Montgomery nominated Dr. Hippie
with a speech that was about things and
events for thirty years back. Then William
BJIk, chairman of the Third ward delega
tion, began an Impressive address to head
off any and all nominations. Silk said ths
question "had been disgusted by able
bodied men In this hall" and that the pro
ceeding would "Injure the ticket all trough."
After a while he was convinced he was
out of order and sat down. Lew Herman
plaoed James P. Connolly before the con
vention, but the latter made a speech
spurning the convention and withdrew his
name. Jerry McMahon loyally 'tried to
nominate P. J, Heafey, but was preventd
by J. J. Mahoney, who said he was au
thorised to keep Mr. Heafey out of the
fray for the same reasons that actuate!
Mr. Connolly.
After destroying much good time a vote
was taken which gave Dr. Hippie elshty
nlne and one-half votes. About Twenty
declined to vote at all. Hippie was declared
the nominee and made a speech In defense
of his desire to have the old city conven
tion brought together again to handle the
water board nomination.
Other Names Come Easy.
The nomlneesVor the Board of Education
were selected by a committee composed of
Julius Meyer, Frank K Weaver, Otto Bau
man, George Smith and J. J. O'Connor
from the names proposed, which, beside)
those recommended and nominated, l"
eluded RhlneharrEfflnger, Harold O. OverV
beck and Miss Elizabeth Shirley. The name
of M. F. Funknouser was suggested for
rennminatlon, but was put out of commis
sion by J. J. O'Connor's declaration that
Mr. Funknouser had served on a republican
committee.
Before adjourning W, H. Herdman got
through a resolution providing that If the
republicans endorse the nominee of the
convention 'the city committee may endorse
the republican nominee. Mr. Herdmnn
pointed out that one member from each
party must be elected, but that the law
does not specify how or by whom they shall
be nominated. Therefore It would be possi
ble for either party to put u man of oppo
site Bolltlcal faith on their ticket and to
elect him. The resolution provided that if
the republicans do not endorse Dr. Hippie
or any other democrat the ccmoenus will
name a republican other than the one
nonilnnted by that party.
