DEFEATS SAWYER IN 38-HOLE FINALS
Esran Show lp Belter In tha Loagr
Game and Is Invincible la
tha Short Con
test.
CHICAGO. Aug. 20.-H. Chandler Egar. of
Exmoor today at Highland park won the
western golf championship for the second
tlm. H defeated D. E. Bawyer of Wheaton
In the 3tf-hole finals, 6 up, I to play. The
only period In th games when the big
gallery of golfing enthusiast who followed
th two players thought Egfcn In danger
was when Bawyer, by brilliant 2 under
bogey play, took the first two holes.
Weather conditions were excellent, the
sun breaking through th clouds soon after
play waa begun and drying up the course.
In the long game Egan was better Invari
ably than his rival. His short game was
Invincible gnd the hard luck that came to
Bawyer at several holes wa mostly due to
his own erratic work. .
Of th subordinate events decided, Walter
E. Egan, the defeated champion, won the
Directors' cup from K. L. Ames of Glen
vlew, J up, 1 to play. Phelps B. Hoyt, an
other former . western ctfamplon, won the
North Shore cup, defeating R. E. Hunter,
Midlothian, 1 up In 20 holes.
In the morning round of the championship
flnaJa, Sawyer won the first two holes,
each In 1 under bogey, gnd sent his third
tee shot within seven feet of the (lag, while
Egan ws short of the green. However, on
good approach and a long putt, Egan
halved the hole. Egan took tha next two
boles by steadier playing and was on even
terms. The sixth was halved and Egan
won the seventh because Bawyer pulled
his brassey out of bounds. Egan wa 1 up
at the turn and won the tenth, eleventh,
twelfth and thirteenth holes, partly because
Sawyer's play was erratic, partly because
Sawyer also had bad goring lurk on several
rhots, such for Instance, a a soft spot on
the tenth green that spoiled a perfect ap
proach shot.
After two halved holes, Sawyer's play
steadied and holing In bogey or under, he
captured the sixteenth, seventeenth and
eighteenth holes, leaving htm only 1 down
on the morning's plays. Cards:

brilliant 4 to Sawyer's B. Each was at the
edge of the green In I. Bawyer' position
was the better, but his approach was not
as good as Egan's and he missed his down
hill putt while Egan holed. Bawyer won
the next hole because Egan wa short on
his approach and ths next waa halved In
throe. For th twelfth hole (thirtieth of
the match), Egan sent a clcek second onto
the green for 190 yards, while Sawyer's
brassey second was to the edge of the
green. Sawyer over-spproaehed and lost
I to 4. Tho next and deciding hole wa
marked by two brilliant shots by Egan,
his mldlron second landing to the right of
the green, twenty yards away. Pitching
up to within six Inches, he easily won th
hole and match, after Bawyer sent his ap

Success.
Three interesting events were pulled off
at th Omaha Driving club's track y
lerday afternoon, the main feature blng
the third heat of the CIum.A pacing rac
whioh wa won by Michael Angelo, driven
by Mr. Wcatherby of Council Bluffs with
Poverty a close et ond. The first heat of
this rac waa easily won by Michael An
gelo, th other two entries. Eddy D. and
Poverty not being In at all. In th sec
ond heat all three kept In a bunch till they
rounded the first corner, but then Michael
Anirelo broke and wa left behind. Pov
erty and Eddy D. ran together for a sljort
distance, bu the foreier outpaced her op
ponent and won bands down.
After numerous false starts the three
w.re let go for th third boat, but th
start was so rank that Mr. Deitrlch drw
nut Eddy D. and left the race to Poverty
nnd Michael Angelo. Poverty broke at tha
second quarter and Michael Angelo got
th lead. It wa a little while befor W.
C. Russell got Poverty to going again and
during that time Michael Angelo was about
eight lengths ahead and It looked Ilk easy
money for him, but Poverty made such'
good time when she got to work again
that Michael Angelo had to hump all h
wa worth In the home stretch and only
won by a mere grandstand and for a mo
ment the crowd went wild with excite-
ment- Both the horses received an ova-'
tlon a they passed th stand to get to
the stables.
In Class B, trotting, Myrtle Boy won'
both, heats In succession, but he wai given
a run for his money in tho second heat
when General Nuttlngham pressed htm.
close. Lady Bell won the Cluss C, pacing,
hunds down. On account of th muddy
track, Coney, the property of H. W. Dunn,
who wns down on tha program fof an ex
hibition, was only driven ground so tha'
audience could look at him.
The reason for the poor start in tb third,
heat of the Class ,A. pacing, th judge
explained was due to tha action of th
driver who repeatedly failed to get In
line for the start. He wa warned again
and oaln ar.d rather than keep the audi
