CHICAGO, Aug r3 Weakness, Induced
by continued marketing of wheat which
wary traders feared to carry over Sunday,
was the latest phase of a nervous market
today. Th price of September fell In
conwequenr ZVo from the highest point
of the day, closing "S under yester
day's final figures. Corn I down WijHc;
oats finished He off; provision are un
changed to lOo higher.
September wheat touched 2c. The
strength was only fleeting, however: The
new values proved too tempting to the
holders of long lines, to whom the crop
damage news has become teas terrifying
and In the conflicting nature of which they
scented danger If their holdings were car
ried over Hunday. A complete reversal
of sentiment followed their realising move
ment and before the market steadied again
H'ptcmlier had lost all of Its previous
gain and was back at the lowest figure
of the opening ranga, 21.00. A partial re
covery occurred In the last half hour,
when tha bulls took hold again, September
rallying to $1 JHt,fi .0b at the close." Th
tone at the flninh, however, was weak."
Clearances of wheat and fldur were equal
lo 877,200 bushels. Primary receipts were
&U2.7U0 bushels, against 6J1.40) bushels a
year ago. Minneapolis, Dtiluth and Chi
cago reported receipts of 5)7 cars, againat
ini last week and 196 a year ago.
Corn wa Influenced largely by the ac
tion of wheat. Heptember opened ifiio

The oat market followed the same gen
eral trend a wheat and com. September
started a shade 10 4c lower at S.!Sc to
33Vu33c and advahced to StVic tinder
free offerings at the advance a weak ton
developed and price declined. September
going back to 83Sc. The . decline wa
checked by covering of ehorts and th
price steadied. September was at 33c
Local receipts ware 353 cars.
Provision were quiet and prices howed
little change until near the close, when
scattered buying by pit shorts and a
Scarcity of ofterirgai combined to lift prices
somewhat. September pork gained 10c at

Part la the Day's
TralOee,
NEW TORK, Aug. 1J The trengih in
today's stock market wa marked, but was
largely in sympathy with the actlv move
ment In a lew prominent stocks. The most
Important radiating center was United
State Steel preferred, which roe aggres
sively above 60 on an urgent demand In
which an uncovered short Interest was
believed to play an important part. Thl
tork wa Influenced by reports that th
disputed trade over the price of steel bil
lets had been settled and the danger of a
disruption of. that and other pool thus
avoided. It ws rumored that this had
been effected by the purchase of the
Youngstown plant of the Republic Iron
nd Steel company, but there was no veri
fication of this rumor Pennsylvania and its
subsidiary stocks and the soft coal group
felt the sympathetic benefit of the move
ment In United States Steel preferred espe
cially owing to the large part pl;yed In
their traffic by Iron and teel and the mate
rial for their production. In the early mar.
ket there was some evidence of realising;
in the Pacifies and this caused some hesi
tation in the general list. The occasional
pressure of profit taking on Mertopolltan
Securities had the sam effect. When
Southern Pacific broke through it re
straint and rose above 58 the whole mar
ket took on a more assured tone. Union
Pacific did not move In company with
its subsidiary stock an4 tha western stocKS
generally were Inclined to hang back, ex
cept Atchison, which came! forward vigor
ously to 81. The bank statement was of
mall influence. The surplus reserve now
stands at such a high level that the d
gree of increase is of little moment. Total
Bales of bonds, par value, 81.Wi5,v0O.
The stock speculation of the week has
been more active and has shown greater
activity. Crop prospects have held the
chief Attention of operator. The action of
the wheat market Itself was attributed in
large part to excess of speculation and to
technical conditions in the Immediate suo-
p!y available In the market. The most
favorable auguries were drawn from ths
government report on the corn and cotton
crop.
Present conditions In those crop are felt
to warrant an assumption of a bumper
yield for both and this assumption Is likely
to form the estimate of those crops eo
long as no deiea-rtous streets upon them
are rennrted in the dallv news.
The low stocks of cotton the world over
on account of ths discouragement to buy
ers of recent high prices point to an
active coming to the replenished stocks.
In the case of corn the threatened short
age of wheat in Europe and the small ex
portable surplus promised here Indicated
a largelv increased demsnd for corn for
foreign account with corresponding bene
fits in the sale of our large crop. Dears
of a disruption of pools for maintaining
price of finished products have been ths
unfavorable factor growing from the terms
of conversion Into steel billets by the Re-
Dubllo steel company. Labor conditions con
tlnue unsettled and are the cause of an
undercurrent of uneasiness in the stock
market. Conditions in the exchange mar
ket have hovered near th gold export
point and engagements for shipment to
London have been several times made and
then cancelled. Railroad earnings aa re-
forted abow an average Improvement and
he Harrlman line have been the subject
of special activity and strength, apparently
based on the good Jurre net earnings.
The demand for bend ha somewhat
revived thl week and prices have gen
erally advanced. United States old 4a have
advanced H and the new 4a per cent
on call during. the week.

CATTLE There were a few cars of cattle
reported this morning, but not enough of
them were on sale to make a test of the
situation. For the week receipts hav been
about the same a for last week, but as
compared with the same week of last year,
there Is a falling off amounting to about
8,000 head. The receipt at this point hav
not been at all excessive, but' at Chicago
the first part of the week, and particularly
on Monday and Wednesday, there seemed
to be more cattle on sale than packer
could handle, and a a result price suf
fered in bad shape at all point.
! A liberal proportion of the receipts last
week consisted of corn fed steers and tho
first half of the week price broke badly.
The latter part of the week, with very mod
erate offering, ther was some recovery,
but still the week closed with a decline
ranging from 26 to S0c in extreme cajea,
the less desirable trades suffering th
worst. Good to cnoice cattle sold from
$6.25 to $6.66. fair to good from $4.75 to 15. 2
and the less desirable grade from $4,60
down.
The demand for western grass cattle held
up in good ahnpe laat week and packer
teemed to prefer them to the corn-feds at
ruling prices. As compared with a week
ogo the market Is not over KXulBc lower.
Good to choice grades are quotable from
$4 to $4.60, fair to good from $3.60 to $4 and
common kinds from $3.60 down.
Ths cow market has been very irregular
all the week the sunia as has been the case
for some time past. Th first half of the
week prices went down very rapidly, but
from Thursday on there was considerable
improvement and ths better grades re
gained the loss and some sales owing to
the very light receipts at the close of the
week looked a little higher than th same
kind aold for at the close of last week.
The fair to good cattle, though, closed 10(ip
16c lower for the week and canners and
cutters were dull and almost unsnlable the
same as usual. Oood to choice grass cow
are quotable from $3 to $3.60, with corn
feds lrom $3.60 to $4, if strictly choice. Fair
to good cows sell from $2.75 to $3, and
pretty fair cutter from $2.25 to $2. 60, with
canners and common cutters from $1.75 lo
$2.25.
Bulls have been-slow sale all the week,
but very fw hava arrived, so the market
is not a great deal lower. Oood grass bulls
sell largely from $2.25 to $2.j0, with bologna
grados from $2.26 down. Veal calves sell
from $4 to $5 for something light nr. J choice,
but most of them go from $4 to $4.60.
The demund for stockers and feeder thla
week has been very limited and at the close
or the ween speculators have quite a few
on hand which they will Drobsblv have to
carry over until next week. Unless In the
case of something very choice the market
can be quoted lOr&lic lower. Th better
grades of cattle are selling from $3.40 to
$3.60, fair to good from U to $3.26 and com
mon kinds from $3 down. KepraaentnUv
aalea:
HUrtS Thar waa a very lirfit run of
hogs hero this morning and as both packers
ana snippers wantea a raw rresn supplies
the market advanced about a dime. Not
far from twenty load wer carried over
from yesterday, which mad tha actual
number on sale a little over fifty loads.
Ths market was rather slow, as buvers
did not like the Idea of paying the advance,
but salesmen would not cut loose for less,
and as a result buyers had to pay the
prior aaked. Heavy hogs sold largely
from $4 86 to $4.90, wltn some oommon kind
from $445 down. Mixed hogs sold largely
from $4.90 to $5.00, and choice lights or
butcher weights from $5 00 to $5.05. Butcher
weights, or those from 200 to 260 pounds, are
now selling full as well a those weighing
20A or a little lesa.
For ths week receipts at this point hsvs
been very liberal. Aa compared with last
weeK there is an increase amounting to
over 20.000 head. As compared with the
same week of last year the increase
amounts to about 8,000 head. Recelpta at
other points hav also been heavy and aa
a result the tendency of prices hss been
downward. Aa compared with the close of
laat week the market la now about liXu-Oc
lower. Representative sales:
At noon today there were still several
loads of heavy hogs in first hands. - for
which there was very little demand, pack
er and shipper apparency not wanting
them. Representative sales:
