California Man Says He Boon Will
Develop the Deposits of Coal
In South Dakota.
H. C. SUlwell of San. Francisco passed
through Omaha yesterday, bound from
Chicago - to his home in the west. Mr.
BtUwell Is general manager of the Ameri
can Magnesile company. The mines of
the company are located near Red Moun
tain, CaL, and Mr. BtUwell says they are
now in full operation and turning out large
quantities of carbonlo acid gas and mage
slum. ;,!.
"The use of the products of the Red
Mountain mlns has almost doubled dur
ing the last year," said Mr. BtUwell. "I
have beeh In Chicago during the last nine
uiouUia, whuro- I conducted teats of our
brick at the plant of the Illinois Steel com
pany. After exhaustive tests the Cali
fornia product was pronounced superior
to the Imported article."
During his a lay In Chicago Mr. SUlwell
bought the coal mines located near Belle
fourche, B. D., which are on what is known
as tlfe Barrett property. The mines have
not' been worked to any great extent, but
It la the. Intention of the conrp"ny, headed
by Mr. SUlwell, to open them at onoa and
work them extensively. In speaking of the
mines Mr. SUlwell said:
"From, what Investigation I have made
It la iy opinion that we have In the Bar
rett mines about ,0uu,000 tons of first-class
coal. Th Northwestern has made some
tests of this coal for steaming purposes and
Mr. Bldwell, general manager of the com
pany,' Informs me that the coal la the beat
for that purpose of any they have used.
Under the present rates of freight It would
be Impossible to ship the coal to Omaha
and market It In competition with eastern

At Manawa Tonlg-ht.

works given at any of the water car
nivals at Manawa will be given during the
parade of boats which takes place at
o'clock tonight. All the buildings In the
park, the groves and boats will be pret
tily decorated with Japanese lanterns. Ex
tra street cars will be run to expedite the
handling of large crowds.
