The single sculls championship was the

gatta of the amateur oarsmen held on

race, that for senior elght-oared shells.
The Vesper crew of Philadelphia, which
made such an enviable record at Paris last
year, defeated the Argonaut crew of To
ronto, Can., with plenty to spare by about
ten lengths.

ing was hejd at the Cleveland Driving park
today to take the place of the usual grand
circuit meeting that has been abandoned
in consequence of the inability of the-local
associations to sell pools.
The meeting was in tho nature of a bene
fit and the program was' made up largely
of speed exhibitions.
Lou Dillon, the champion trotter, made
an attempt to heat 2:OK to a high wheel
sulky, but failed, her time being 2:09i.
She showed that she had been worked too
hard this week, this being tho third time
she had trotted against the watch since
Monday.
Several records were broken, however.

trotting race, lowering the world's record
