Compete .".ejr of Assessor Bred. Tt has betn said tiiat Douglas County made low assessment and yet it haa been shown here by the figures gathered by Mr. Reed that In many Instances assess ments of property In the business part of Omaha, hav been very materially in creased, while In the suburban portions of the town there has been a dropping down. governor Mickey You mean to say that In the' oittlylnf district where It was platted year ago that there baa been a depreciation? . r Mr. Rosewater Much of that la dead properly, and It Is a question whether they would,- bring enough under the hammer to pay tha back taxes. Governor Mickey He has decreased the assessed value of those lota; he haa not omitted any? I.lr, Roaewater Not ao far as I know. I am not familiar with 'the assessor's books, but ao far as I can learn, there has not been very much ground for complaint. I have In vestigated by asking real estate dealers and people familiar with realty values, how close the assessment comes to the actual values, and from all I can learn they have all ceitlrled that Mr. Reed U tha mott competent mart In our city for this work and does his work conaclentlously. And yet there may. be instance when property may have escaped him, or through the In tervention of the county board there may nave .rj iauioM.. maoa wrier trier houM have been an Increase, but that la inflnltesimsl when you consider the aggre gate,, valuation la over $,000,000. Their statement ot the stockholders la that the amount expended for these shops was $Ml. 1X8,87. Add to that the value of the old buildings they retain, which must be at least $100,000. Tha' would make a tota) of about ?C90,000. or somewhere near $700,000 of vaulatlon that they return here as J3,'). Then the grounds occupied by the ahopa are worth at least a million dollars. I deny that the shopo occupied by any railroad company can ba Jreated as right-of-way or depot grounds, and I claim that iheae lots should be returned hy the county spses-or and In cluded In the assessment thla year. ' Itlaht of Wy a Iretense. Ever since we had the Union Paclflc rail road In Omaha, slnoe the shop grounds under all the laws of Nebraska wc,re re turned for local taxation, but they havo discovered that under the now law framed by the railroad attorneys they authorised to return the lands minus the buildings as a right-of-w-ny. I cannot conceive of a right-of-way under a building where thera Is r.o road. Undoubtedly the portion of the shop grounds that leads-to the round house where the locomotives are housed will have to go -vi-Hh the main line because It Is a part of the equipment of the road. Of the ffty-thr-e blocks or parts of blocks Inside the Union Pacirtc shop grounds, twenty nine cf then bloeks wer sid In ii at $W3,87J. In 1IW4 only '.x block were gpyet.f.jil at $i0,06. Who mad , the slump In our esi'-'sanent of -?13,0uoT What be came of the twenty-four blocks In VM that were not asaesHed l'K-ally and the forty-seven, blocks not asst. ed locally In VH. That i.ieuni, pf course, thut theee shop nd groun Is on which tliey stand should have been re turned to the county aasensor for local tax ation, mid not returned to the state hoard to be Included In ti e rlfaht -of-way. The Great Western is in th nun boat They should pay in the same proportion. The Northwestern makes a report to tholr stockholders that they have eight miles of road running Into South Omaha, that I especially valuable, but we get no return from that flit all. MONITOR CLUD AT A BANQUET I'niqne Feast Held la Commemoration of th Birth of John Erlccaon. It was an unique banquet that th members of the Monitor club held last night at their club' rooms at Fourteenth and Howard streets In memory of th great Swedish-American Inventor and sea man, John Erlccaon, the father of th screw steamer nd Inventor of th Mon itor which put the Merrlmao out of action during the civil- war. Everything" don at the club rra after the fashion of th sea, the songs wre of the Sea and th main item in th banquet was mackerel. And the member themselves were once, more on the sea. Forgotten was th prsiila nd farm, fora;nttni the buaiaes pursuit In an Inland town;- everything was of the briny blue and the men were again sailors, th descendant of . sailors. Little cared thoy of the weather outside, which bor dered on the semi-tropical; they were on a three-masted bark, sailing amid the cold snd fog of the fjords, teliljig tale of th viking ancestor and. .feeling In imagina tion th cool breath of the Iceland. Each man who wanted to eat and they all did took his plate and knife and fork, and going to the "galley," helped himself to roast beef and mackerel and boiled potatoes. Then they sat where they, wished. Being' of th sea, the order for adjournment was "Alia pa daeck o'tag- In egel." And then the songs. Old, old ong, old their native mountains, old as th a; songs of the prowess of Hengtst nd llorsa, rune of the warriors of the North lands, airs of th fatherland. Thty sang them again and rgain, and lifting their glaaxe on high toasted tho greatest sey man of them all John Erlccaon. Sixty of these men of th sea were pres ent, and each in hi turn spoke of the Inventor, of hi reinarksble genius, hi early Ufa and his latr successes. And then they spok of the new land, the adopted home, th birthplace of the seamen of the future), and speaking thus. Interming ling their thought of the old land wlt.lt those of th new they lifted their glaasoii once mora on high and with shout toasted th "Cera of the Ocean."
