' t NEW YOB K, July 27. There was further speculstlve liquidation of stocks today snd tne bears pounded stocks Increasingly. Te!r raids on stocks were covering of los orders. It waa thua demonstrated that large speculative holrtlnra are In a vulner able poaltlon end capable of being dis lodged by declining prices. The sentimental eflect of tne decline was In Itself strong Snd the eagernees profeaaed amongat a certain claaa of (peculators to buy storks at any fraction from the recent high level did not hold out In the face of the falling prices. The action of United States Steel preferred was watched with special Interest and its leadership of the decline was a material factor In deriding the tone of the market. The first 6i0 shares sold above last night's prices, but an Immediate de cline followed and was unrelieved. A good deal of attention was given to the possibility cf en Issue being rald be tween the United States and the Ruselan government If the Vladivostok snuadrons encounter any ships in the pacific under the American flag. Reports of setbacks to crops gained currency. The few reports of groas earnings of railroads for the third week of July pointed to a poor svernsie. Rumors of a rupture in the anthracite concllllntion board snd resulting strikes had a keener effect by unrest In other de partments of labor. Kncouragcnient at the inability of the market to withstand the seillr.5 arid another pes'imistio view of the Iron ade by the Iron Trade led to another decline. Bonds were easy. Packers were able to handle the moderate offerings, but the demand Is limited aa yet and shippers should govern themselves accordingly. A moderate number of beef steers were received and were picked up by packers at -nominally stronger prices. Puckers are handling a few steers and with the small offerings the market Is In fair condition. Prices today compare favorably with re cent quotations. The supply of cows and heifers was lim ited apd as packers are handling a few decent killers the market is nominally steady on anything that can be used at all. There is no demand for canning grades and such stuff Is practically unsaleable. The feeder trade conttnues dull and weak. ?'he country demand Is very small and the ew sales made are rather unsatisfactory. The supply Is limited, but tha inquiry is also very light. - j . HOGS Forty odd loads, or around 2,800 head, were received this morning, while there, was sufficient demand from, both packers and shippers to take care of the day's arrivals, packers took hold more freely than at any time since the renewal of the strike. . At the start the outlook was rather un promising and trading at the start was any where from pretty close to steady to as much aa a nickel lower, and early trading was along those lines, Later reports from Chicago coupled with a fair demand here helped out the market and trading fol lowed at pretty cloee to steady prices on desirable kinds and the market became fa ly brisk at the prices. Armour was a pretty free buyer, all things considered, and Swift was also on the market for a few loads. Shippers took on the remainder and a clearance was made in good season, the market holding up well throughout. The situation la decidedly unsatisfactory as yet and the demand Is rather uncertain, although as far aa the trade today was con cerned the market was quite satisfactory. Assouan, that seventeen years o ao ago, to the best of my recollection, was a vil lage with on inn, where the great attrac tion was to see the Arabs shoot the boil ing waters of the cataract with a goatskin for a boat. Is now an International health reort,i without any cataract to apeak of. At least there Is none at this season of the year, for the dam has altered ail this. By way of compensation there are several great hotela, .one' of them, .'the Cataract, a finely planned building com manding a beautiful view of the rooky Nile.. Hither come not tourists on'y. but many sick from England and America, a the dry air and splendid u;,r,y winter climate are excellent for various dis eases. Most people, though they be neither traveler nor Invalids, hsv heard ef the Assouan dam and reservoir, and also of tha Island of Phllae, near by, and Its beautiful temples, the ancient city of Isla and ho'y house, as It was called by tha eld Egyptians, To this dam I had the advantage of paying two visits, and In view of Its im portance to the future of Egypt the In for. matlon I collected concerning It may prove of Interest. To V!'(S'-i with, It Is fre quently and erroneously called a ''barr age," which It Is not. The word "barrage" means a guiding wall, a barrier that does not store water, but turrit It in a dealred direction. - Of those there are severe.! In Eypt,ut I think that the only dam ftl reservoir 1 at Assouan. I"". bt-st view of tills wonderful work, which has now been In operation for about two years,- t to be obtained from the massive gran!; wall that forms ths dam. 'J Ma wall is over J, (mi yrd in lnitii, and croaae the Nile from aid to !.!. - On the crest of it, that la, twenty-six fet wide, run a ttamway, along wnich the vlaltor, tested on a rouh trolley, I , roeled at epted by Arabs, llonra to ii. a l.-'i(h he i- a great extent of shining tk(, tetween wnVh the Wat.-r rus.a In i i.;n,-itf, &n.i lu U a .,uttt a . t b.ka it.at I ft s .ma 1 ;..-: ati.lii a c (! of of It and ot the Nile for the 1M m:?ee or so that tt Is held up Is'preaalng asalnst the wail on which he stand.. lfi this wall are 1 alulcea, worked by machin ery, which are sufficient to deal with every conceivable contingency of flocj. Sometimes more of thfrrt ar open and sometime fewer. On the flay of my sec ond visit (March 13) only tlx of these and' a part of a seventh were opn. Through the seven openings, each of them 8 feet tnchee wide by XI feet deep, the whole Nile wsa rnshlrjt at the rat of 702 tons of water a second, the amount that, according to the calculation "of the engineers, It was necessary to pass that day. It la a wondroua thing to see the lent-up water gntsh In torrents of foam through these narrow gates with a force so fearful that It appears Impossible that masonry built by man shou'd withstand their thrust and wear. But such fears re groundless. If It continues to be properly watched and attended to there I no reason why this dam should not last s leng aa the pyramids. H. Rider Haggard In ; London Mall.
