"Old-Time BchooU and School Books,'
br Clifton Johnson. The author gives
much interesting Information regarding
old-Urns schools and school books In Eng
land and th first schools In America
There are extracts and Illustrations from
the bonk, and the author calls attention
to mmi of the common traits of char
acter of master and pupil of thoso times.
Th rials and discouragements were
minr. not only for the master and pupil
hut for th rnts. who provided the
school house, fuel, etc. There are many
Illustrations collected by the author, prob
ably one of the most suggestive being ar
Inkstnnd. a sandbox and a bunch of un
cut quills. Scripture wss taught In many
nt th hnnVn A feature of one of the
nrlmera that nerhSDS 8 roused most at
tentlon was an Illustration depicting the
hurnlni of John Hocers, at the staKe, wun
his wife and ten children looking on. The
author says: "Every youthful primer
owner counted those children to make sure
v, tainment of the text as to their num
ber was correct." A chicken fight In full
progress significantly Illustrates "A Deple
tion of Wickedness "
The author of a goography publication
of 1SH ventured to tench that science In
rPtrv. BDe.ikln of hlrriselt In the third
person In the Introduction the author
snld: "Unrractlced In poetry In a great
degree, he has ventured thereupon sup
posing It to be In general rather more
taking with youth than prose; and though
tint the most flowery cast, It will, iie
hopes, answers the end." The following
is an excerpt from the "poetry":
"One river of enormous sise
To west of Mississippi lies.
The river this calld Missouri,
And tow'rd southeast Its courses He,
This river, from what I can see,
Can't less than the Ohio be."
Even arithmetic was taught In- poetry,
s shown' by the following "sum":
"If to my age there added be,
One-half, one-third and three times three,
Plx score and ten the sum will be;
What Is my age, pray show It me?
The problems were sometimes Intensely
, practical, for Instance: "Divide 4V4 gallons
of brandy equally among 1M soiaiers. ine
answer lsi "One gill apiece." Published
by The Macmlllan Co. ,
"Two Argonauts In Spain," by Jerome
Hart. This book is a series of newsy let
ters, written in a light vein. The author
says: "The reader will find in these pages
nothing1 about religion, revolution or poli
tics." They were first published In the Ban
Francisco Argonaut. There are many In
teresting descriptions of Spanish pecullar
; ltles, the theaters, opera, circuses, eto.,
and there are numerous full psge illustra
tions. Published by Payot, Upham & Co.
"The Philippines and the Far East," by
Homer C. Stunts. The author, a mission
ary of the Method'.st church, Intensely leal
ous and practical, gives In this book a com
prehensive account of conditions past and
present in the Philippines. It deals with
the friar question, the resources of the
islands, the government situation, mission
ary and educational difficulties, ' Interna
tional relations, finance, etc. Mr. Stunts
s entirely optimistic He believes that a
great deal has been accomplished in me
Islands and is very convincing in his argu
ments. The author presents the facts, as
seen by hhn. in a thoughtful and Intelli
gent manner, and a careful reader wlU
have an Increased Interest in our little
brother, the Filipino. Published by Jen
nings & Pye. ,
"An Evans of Suffolk." by Anna Far
quhar (U C. Page & Co.), la a novel writ
ten somewhat like one of the "problem
stories," but It Is not. It tells of a girl
who marries a second time, but forgets to
tell her husband that she Is a widow with
a mora than questionable father. The
father appears as an anarchist, and falling
to kill the husband, commits suicide. The
story comes out and the end Is peace all
round. What there Is of It is well told.
"Hemming, the Adventurer," by Theo
dore Roberta (U C. Page & Co.), is good
. for a summer, day's reading simply. It
v requires neither thought to follow the plot
nor does It jar on the sensibilities. It la a
tale "Of an English officer who becomes a
special ' correspondent and , after experi
ences In South Africa and a few other out
of the' way stops in the world returns to
London, conventionality and the woman
whose action drove him away.
"Tomfoolery," by James .Montgomery
Flagg, text and illustrations (Life Publish
ing company). Those classical gems of the
funny -page which are known as "Lim
ericks" flourish here In abundance. The
illustrations fit the text and the text 'tits
the occasion.
A revision of . "Twenty-Eight Tears In
Wall Street' by Henry Clews, Is from the
press of the J. S. OgUvle Publishing com
pany. This is the sixth edition of the
work, and In it the author has brought
his review of men and methods of "the
street" VP to date. The way in which Mr.
Clews . handles the subject is unique, and
from many of the Incidents not only Infor
mation but considerable humor is dorlved,
