' "Oie trouble with that girl la that she Is possessed of the devil," said Rev. Charles W. Bavidge of the People's church to Judge Day when "Fainting Bertha" Lei becks was arraigned in the district court on the charge of larceny from the person. The' reverend gentleman added that the proper thing to do In the caee is to ascertain whether "the devil can be cast out" Bertha came' Into court and pleaded guilty before Mr. Bavidge appeared before the bar and Judge Day asked him If he bad advised the girl to enter such a plea, which would result In a penitentiary sen tence. "I advised her to tell the truth," said the preacher. "I asked If she was guilty ad she admitted she was.. Then I could ea nothing for her to do but to plead guilty. I wouldn't have her He to the court or anybody else." "But," remarked the judge, "do you un derstand that she may be morally guilty and not legally guilty?" "I do," said Mr. Bavidge, "but If she is morally guilty that is sufficient. Insane asylums and prisons have failed to reform this girl, and it is plain that nothing can lift her up but faith In God. I think she can be saved if surrounded by the proper Influences. I can secure a home for her where I think she can be reformed." ' Lawyer F. 8. Howell, who happened to be in the room, was designated by Judge Day as a friend of the court for a con f errce with Bertha and Mr. Bavidge. After the conference Mr. Howell stated that ha had no doubt that Mr. Bavidge would do hi full duty to the court if the girl should he committed to his care. "This might be done," suggested Mr. Howell, "by sentencing Bertha and then suspending the sentence and giving Mr. Bavidge an opportunity to put the girl on the path of rectitude by committing her to his ears.'; ' County 'Attorney English suggested that v some inquiry should be mads Into the eenlty of the girl and to give opportunity for such Inquiry the case was put over I until next week. 4l A Publlo funeral of Mr. Aen,pMh being inopportune on ic'oun, of the Mrloul loknesa of anothe "memb.r of the flkmlIyf just arrived jm j, th, were temporyr,,, deposited in the Forest Lawn raw and the interement strictly private,' (j , 0uy friends and neighbors will accept our heartfelt thanks for their many man ifestations of kindness during the sickness and demise of our husband and father.
