NEW YORK. June 13. The flattening out
of the speculative upward movement of
? rices was a sore disappointment today to
he professional trading element. The rise
which developed In the latter part of last
week hud aroused great hopes that the
market was at last stirred out of i(s rut
and when the smaller class of speculators
attempted to take profits on tome of the
holdings taken over laat week they found
they had the market to themselves and no
absorptive power for their moderate offer
ings. The reasons which the habitual
tracers always expect to be present for a
movement of prices were variously assigned.
The opening sdvance was promptly chilled
by the heavlneas of United States Steel
S referred and unfavorable conclualons were
rawn from the personality of the brokers
employed In that stock who were supposed
to be Informed on trade affairs. The
weekly discussion of railroad traffic by of-
nciRia servea to upset me calculations that
better traffic conditions for the railroads
would result from the better crop conditions
of last week. On the contrary, railroad
officials were rather generally agreed In
the opinion that the merchandise move
ment over their lines was markedly smaller
than last year and that merchants and
manufacturers were still persisting In their
conservative hand-to-mouth methods of
buying. Accumulation of empty cars was
an Item of many .of these weekly inter
views. The domestic exports for May make a
poor contrast with the relative Improve
ment in April which it was hoped marked
the turn for the better in our export trade.
May exports of domestic products, on the
contrary, have decreased over $16,000,000
from those of May last year and upward
of $18,000,000 from April of this year. Of
the decrease from last year mors than
311,000.000 Is In value of breadstuffs and
over 83,000.000 In value of cotton. The 34,473,
831 of breadstuffs exports makes the lowest
valuation of any one month for years past.
The advance In the grain markets today
helped to unsettle the stock market, as did
a reduction In the price of copper. The
circular to stockholders of the Northern
Securities company renewed attention to
the tying up of the dividends on the 8395,
000,000 of stock of this corporation. A mo
mentary advanee of a point In Ontario &
Western was Ineffective to hold the mar
ket, which closed heavy at the lowest of
the day. There was a good Inquiry for
bonds and prices were firm. Total sales,
par value, 81,866.000. United States bonds
unchanged on call.

Heel copper property In urper Michigan,
the World says: "Within the pset ten
days John D. Rockefeller has taken tip
personally the task which had been left
to his brother, William, and to. H. H.
Rogers, who have been conspicuoiiiily Iden
tified with the mineral Interests' of the
Standard OH company. For ten years the
Standard Oil capitalists have been aciulr
Ing the mines of America through their
bonking Interests.
"In Colorado, David Moffatt and Dennis
Sullivan of the First National bank of
Denver have paid out many millions in
the last sis years for mines, and are snid
to control 70 per cent of the producing
gold, silver and lead mines of the middle
Rocky mountain district.
"Senator Clark, owner of the United
Verde copper mines of. Arlaona and with
large holdings In many of the Amalga
mated Copper company's mines In Mon
tana, has been working with Mr. Rogers
for several years. The extensive placer
gold In southern California controlled by
the southern California banks lire In such
condition that they can be take over at
any time.
"F. A Helnie has been In this city for
several weeks. He will neither affirm or
deny that he Is negotiating for the turning
over of his interests In Montana to thn
new combine. ,
"The only" stumbling block li the way
of the deal Is the Insistence S Mr. Hclnzo
on being made an officers of the new com
pany, which will make It possible for hlin
to keep certain promises In Montana."
DENVER, June IS. John Campion, who
is heavily Interested In the Little Johnny
and other Letvdvllle mines, says that the
merger of metalliferous mines organised by
Rockefeller has not reached Colorado and
dcubts if It ever will.
"I understand that thero Is a big deal on
with Mr. Rockefeller at the head for the
construction of certain mining Interests in
Montana and Idaho, but It Includes copper
properties only," said Mr. Campion. "I do
not think that the project will ever be ex
tended to Colorado, nnd as far as I can
learn none of the local mine owners ta In
terested in any way In the deal.
