Bet with a very large crop, The nnal gov
ernment estimate lor the entire country
gives a crop of 3o3,06l,w) bushels, the
crop for laat year was 92.8avi and the
'V vrage haa been Jts.ooJ.OUO bushela.
Wheat la a very nervous market," said
one of the professional. "The email atocka
or cash wheat are held mainly by specu
lators, who look for extravagant prices.
In the meantime the demand is small, the
receipts are Increasing and the movement
of the new crop la a short way off. The
price la way above the exporting possi
bility and It la only a question of time
when they must get back. 1 think It not
likely serious damage has bean, done the
wheat crop by the ralna."
Gardner with a party of grain men have
finished a 2,000 mllea trip through wheat
atates. They report: Western Illinois has
a promise of a fair crop and the same Is
true of Missouri, Kansas nnd northern In
dian Territory and northern Oklahoma.
Elsewhere the prospect Is for from one
half to no crop. This Is especially true of
Ohio and Indiana, where It Is difficult to
estimate the amount plowed up for other
grain and the fields left standing which
will not be cut. The whole crop aeems two
or three weeks late. Corn thev found to be
a very large acrage and mostly up with a
good ntand, but very late. )ata they found
to have an enormous acreage, a fine stand
and a fine color. The party did not visit
Nebraska.
A discreet marketing of corn from Ne
braska and Illinois haa left the trade un
certain as to whether the corn movement
Is on the ebb or haa Just begun. When
Chicago began to weaken with the heavy
receipts the shipments were cut oft and the
trane began to think the movement was
over. When the market went strong again
the corn came In at the higher figure, all
that would be taken. Rein strengthened
the market, but not for Ion, for It waa
felt the damage In the lowlands would more
than be met by the rain on the uplands.

GENERAL MARKET PROVES IRRESPONSIVE
Dealings, After a Short Stir, Qalekly
Drops Into a Condition of Apathy
In Spit of Resist
NEW YORK. Juns . The speculation of
Ontario a western stock in toaay s stock
market had more the appearance of an
active speculation than anything that has
occurred In stocks since the movement on
the Union Paclno in connection with the
Northern securities decision. The general
market proved Itself almost wholly Irre
sponsive to the Influence In spite of vigor
ous efforts on the part of amall room
traders to extend the movement Into the
rest of the list. The dealing In Ontario
A Western In the first hour made up al
most the bulk of the whole market for the
entire day. The outcome ef the Incident
had the effect of leaving speculative senti
ment more than ever hopeless over the
chance of Inducing any activity In the
market. The dealings were quick to drop
into the condition of apathy which has
characterised trading for some time past.
The Chicago Great Western stocks were
the most conspicuous victims today, the
common losing over a point, the preferred
by five and the preferred A, 13. There
waa not the slightest evidence of aupport
for these securities which have shown lit
tle activity for a long time past, except
the common stock. Small amounts of the
stock were sold apparently for what they
could bring, with the market bare of buy
ing orders on the way down.
Amalgamated Conner rose K when the re
election of the directors without opposition
became known, but the gain was not held.
The subsidence of floods In the southwest
was regarded with satisfaction and It
waa pointed out that southwestern rall
roud earnings from this time will make
favorable comparisons with the flood dam
age period of last year. There waa a
ratner notable expansion in the week s
movement of corn. Otherwise the hand to
mouth policy of business and Industry In

SHEEP There were more sheep ar
lambs here this week than hnve been
of the receipts came from western Ne
braaka and carried but little flesh. They
had been roughed through the winter and
fed very little, but In the abeence of good
stuff packers bought up most everything
in sigm hi wnat looxea to De steuay prices.
There were some more of ths wooled
lamhs on sale this morning that brought
38.87 last week, but buyers did not take
noia oi mem, claiming tney were too ngnt,
and besides that the fuct that they were
wooled hurt the sale of them. At this time
of year, when practically everything com
ing forward Is clipped, wooled stock does
not sell to as stood advantage.

NEW TORK. June -Proceedings were
begun today by Coroner Nicholas Brown
In an endeavor to solve the mystery sur
rounding the death of Frank T. Young,
the wealthy bookmaker. Young waa shot
on Saturday last while on his way In a
cab to a steamship pier to sail for Europe
with his wife. With him was Mrs. Nan
Patterson, formerly an actress, whom
Toung had known for several years. Mrs.
Patterson was held without ball by the
coroner and locked up In the Tombs prison.
The police at first believed that Young
killed himself, but various circumstances
caused them to change this opinion and
today the detectives In charge of the in
vestigation said they were sure Young's
wound was not self -Inflicted.
The entire case may center about the re
volver with which Young was killed. Bis
deteotlves have been at work on this fea
ture of the case since Young's death was
first discovered. Friends of Young say tie
never carried a revolver.
Mystery Snrronnda Witness.
Much mystery was made of a witness
who. It was aald, would be produced st
the Inquest snd which testimony wouH
go fsr to clear tip the case. Friends ot
Young said this witness was "not a thou
sand miles away from the scene when
Young was shot." Who this witness Is or
what connection he had with the cam
could not be learned. It was said, how
ever, that when he took the stand and told
his story it would be made plain that
Young did not kill himself und had no
Intention of doing so.
Young's body Is at the home of a friend
of the family In New Rochelle. where the
funeral services will be held this evening.
The father and brother of Mrs. "Nsn"
Patterson, who came here from Washing
ton, called at the criminal court building
today. They had v'slted the girl but be
yond expressing their belief In her In
nocence declined to discuss the case.
Abraham Levy, Mrs. Patterson's counsel.
said today his client would undoubtedly
be liberated after the hearing.
Everything points to the fact that Mr.
Ycung shot h'mself, Mr. Levy said, "and I
am satisfied the ooroner and all other un
prejudiced persons will think so after all
the evidence has been heard. Wo shall
Insist that there be no delay In the hear
ing today for It la our Intention to get
our client out of the Tombs aa .soon aa
possible.
Suicide Theory Not Believed.
The coroner's physician who performed
the autcpsy on Young's body said today
that he aw no reason why the bullet
wound that caused the man's death could
not have been lelf-lnfflcted. especially If
the trigger had been pulled with the
thumb. Pieces of the epidermis removed
from two fingers of the right hand of the
dead man for close examination were pitted
aa If with powder, although It was not
clearly evident from a hasty Inspection
thst the marks were made by powder.
The Young case hearing waa postponed by
the coroner and Mrs. Patterson's ball waa
fixed at 36,000. When the case was celled
the district attorney asked' for an adjourn
ment. This was opposed by Mrs. Patter
oon's counsel, but sfter a long argument
the coroner decided to put the caae over
until Friday. '
Counsel for Mrs.. Patterson then asked
that she be admitted to ball and suggested
the sum of 32,000. Mr. Garvan held that
flO.OOO should be the minimum ball required,
saying: "It this woman Is guilty of any
crime at all, -she Is guilty of murder In ths
first degree."
District Attorney Jerome later declared
that he would oppose the release of Mrs.
Patterson on ball. -
"This is a case," said he, "In which the
coroner haa no right to accept , ball. I
shall oppose the' release of this woman no
matter what amount of ball Is offored."
Mrs. Patterson la Held.
It transpired that this action by Mr.
Jerome was due to the fact that he has
In his possession an affidavit of William
Luce, a brother-in-law of Young, In which
Luce declares that on Friday evening
Young told him that he was going out to
see Mrs. Patterson.
"Me asksd me to go with him," the affi
davit gays, "saying 'the little woman has
some letters which I must get from her.
I'm afrsld of her and I don't know but
that she might kill me. I'm through with
her. I Intend to break it off tonight.' "
Luce went with him and met Mrs. Pat
terson and the ' three remained together
until t o'clock Sunday morning. Mrs. Pat
terson did not have the letters with- her.
however, and according to Luce, It wag
for this reason that Young telephoned her
to meet him on Saturday, asking her to
bring the letters with her. Mrs. Patterson
waa taken back to the Tombs this after
noon. Evaporated Apples and Dried Frolfs.
