Co art Knows Herself" Was First Caal, A Pike county Mlssourtan Is credit el with having first used the expression: "If this court knows he. self, and she thinks she do." Long before the discovery of gold In California, a Pike county boy named Waikburn, so It Is said, ran away from home and went to the Rocky mountains, where he grew to manhood as Indian fighter, hunter, trapper and mountain, guldo, H'e became 6 feet 4 inches tall, proportionately thin tfnd marvelously awk ward, He had many encounters with griz zlies and Indians. He was scarred front head to foot, one eye had been partly gouged out, his hair was thin and coarne and stood straight up on his head, and hung In evory direction from the sides. Blackburn, as might be supposed, was not an educated man, but he was not lacking In keen wit and sound sense. When gold was discovered Blackburn went to the mines, and the miners, as a sort of a Joke, elected him alcalde, au ofllce similar to that of Justice of tha peace. The first case brought before the alcalde was that of a gambler, who, while drunk and on horHOback, had run over u young Mexican woman, knocking her down and seriously injuring her. The trial took place In the largest cabin In the nilgh borhood, which was packed with rougldy dressed, much bewhlskered ' men. The gambler, who was rich, hired able counsel to defend him. Alcalde Blackburn called the young woman, who told her story in broken English, but frankly and honestly. When she finished, the alcalde peremptorily nided the trial. The attorney tor the de fendant protested vehemently, but tit, alcalde rah his hand through his hair until It stood up stralhtr on top thun ev- and remarked: "If this court knows herself, and she. thinks she do, I fine you JUKI damages and assess upon you the costs of puttln' thU yere gal In good condition." When asked what he meant by "good condition," he replied that the "garuldln chap" must psy the doctor's bill and ui; other costs of tho woman's Illness. moie learned Judge might have made a, more formal ruling, but scarcely a, J aster oiw.-Kuiiiai City Journal f
