NDW TORK, June k During the first
hour of today's trading there were a few
large buying ordera executed In a number
of atocka, lifting them to a higher level
and causing the general market to harden
in eympalhy, but the advantage was nut
Sursueu, and the market fell Into Intense
ullneaa, with no evidence of a disposition
either to buy or sell. The early strength
was not accounted for by anything In the
day's news, lvxceselve ralna In the grain
region were counted against the prospects
of the crops and some rather sensational
reports were circulated In Wall street of
damage by floods. The nervous tone In
the cotton market gave rise to rumors of
bad money conditions growing out of tjpo
condition of that market, but tho rumor
was Ignored on the block exchange. The
June 1 condition waa paid more attention
to In the stock market than were the move
ments In the cotton market Itself. The
estimates of the week's currency movement
Indicate a continuance of the now to this
center although the New York gain seems
to be less than last week, and New York
exchange at Chicago is ritdog , slightly.
With the gain on aubtreasury operations
there Is promise of an Increase In cash of
over !7.(MO,000 to be shown by tomorrow's
bank statement. The June 1 movement in
the oountry waa of Interest, allowing a
decrease of but 113,266,168 for May, In spite
of the heavy outgo of gold.
Permission waa given today for the tele
graphic transfer to New York of 11,710.000
in Japanese yen to errrve In Ban Pranaiaco
next week.
Tha reports of net earnings for April
of the Union Pacific and Southern Paclflo
were decidedly more favorable than bss
been the rule for that month, the small
Increase in gross being supplemented in
both cases by a small decrease In operating
expenses which augmented the gain In net.
The stocks of those roads were even more
dull and Indifferent than the average of
the Use The strength shown by the ooaiers
tvaa In spite of the April statement of the
Lehigh Valley, In which the small gain
In not earnings by the railroad waa more
than wiped out by the loas of the coal
companies. A fall In the price of .copper
was without effect en stocks. The frac
tional advances In the ooaiers aad In United
States- Bteel preferred made the closing
Arm, with prices well maintained.
Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par
value. 21,706.000. United States' new 4s ad
vanced per cent on call.

CATTLE There were a few more cattle
this morning than generally expected, but
at the same time receipt were not what
would bo called excessive. Tne inaruet
was right close to steady, but the wire edge
eumed to be off and trading v. as not ni
brisk as It was yesterday. In spue of that
fact, though, a good clearance waa made
In fairly good aeason. A ,
Eeef steera could probably best be de
scribed by calling them steady to a ahade
lower. Buyers did not seem to be as ex
cited as they were yesterday and were of
the opinion that they had bean paylne i
little too much for their auppllea. The faot
that it was Friday, with recelpta a little
heavier than generally expected, gave them
a good excuse for being bearish. The more
desirable grades sold In about the same
notches they did yeaterday as a general
thing, but. there were cases where sales
were made that looked txulOo lower than
the high tlm yesterday
There was a very light sprinkling of
oows and heifers In the yards, but, the
same as waa the case with steers, buyers
were Inclined to be rather bearish and tho
market was steady to a little lower, soms
sales showing a loss of as much as 6ai0o.
Trading was not very active at any time,
but owing to the small number on sale the
morning Was not far advanced before
verythlng ohanged banda
Bulls were perhaps not quite so Arm as
yesterday, but the prices paid for thoae
and veal calves did not ahow much change.
Btock ers and feeders arrived In limited
number and In fact there were Just a few
bunclies In sight. The better grades were
bout steady, but where the quality was
undesirable buyers were Inclined to get
them for little less money. Representa
tive sales: i
