THAT SECTION OF THE CITY FLOODED
i
Sewers ratable to Carry Water front
Hill Streets and Portion of
Vpper Broadway Is Also
laaadated.
As a result of the heavy rain yesterday
afternoon Indian Creek went on one of
Its periodical rampages and shortly after
4 o'clock overflowed its banks at the North
western bridges. Here the water poured
onto Broadway like a mill race, and It
took but a short while to flood the street
from curb to curb between Tenth street
and the Illinois Central tracks. In many
places the water poured over the side
walk and Into the basements of the abut
ting buildings.
In the immediate vicinity of the North
western depot the water was tip to the
hubs of the wagons and the motor cars
had considerable difficulty for a time In
getting through between these two points.

I As usual the flood brought with it a mass
of driftwood and other debris, a great
part of which, together with slimy mud,
found its way onto Broadway.
The yards of the Northwestern were sev
eral feet under water In places and at
the df-pot the flood poured over the pas
senger platform. Tenth. Eleventh and
Twelfth streets, south of Broadway, formaJ
convenient channels for the water from
Indian Crock with the result that the lm
medlato district south of Broadway be
tween Tenth and Thirteenth streets was
badly submerged.
Although the water came up to the
floors of tho bridges, Indian Croek only
left Its banks at the Northwestern, thus
confining the flood to that district. The
railroad had a large force of men keeping
the debris from covering the tracks.
Hewer Are Inadequate.
As usual on occasions of heavy rain the
sewer system of tho city proved entirely
Inadequate and on South Main street the
water, when tho sewers refused to carry
It off, filled tho street from curb to curb.
On First street the water, carrying with
It tons of dirt from Madison and Graham
avenues, poured down the street to Broad
way. Af the Junction of First street and
Broadway the street for a while resembled
lake.
It was noticed during the height of the
water in the creek that a number of largo
fish wero being carried down the stream,
but where they came from no one seemed
to know. Harry Huddleston, a newsboy,
while trying to catch some of the fish
aa they passed, lost his balance and fell
Into the creek and had a narrow escape
from drowning. After being carried some
distance by the rush of water he suc
ceeded in catching hold -of a tree top,
which had become fastened at the Seventh
street bridge, and bystanders dragged him
onto dry land.
The overflow of Indian creek yesterday
called the attention of several of the city
officials to the fact that the recent state
legislature passed a law providing means
whereby the course of such a waterway
as Indian creek could be changed and the
coat of such work paid for by a special
levy of not to exceed 4 mills In any ona
year. The law also provides a plan
whereby the payment can be spread over
a term o4 years.

Council Bluffs. At the meeting last night
the executive committee waa Instructed to
Invite these men to a conference, so as to
ascertain what proposition they have to
offer.
The discussion last night developed the
fact that while many are anxious for con
nectlon with the Independent companies
they are opposed to a second telephone
exchange In the city.
Clarence Judson quoted a number of
figures for the benefit of the meeting. He
claimed that eighteen counties, including
Pottawattamie, In western Iowa had Inde
pendent telephone lines maintaining W8 ex
changes and operating between 84,000 and
25,000 telephones. Few If any of these In
dependent companies, he said, would con
sent to connect with the Hell company,
even If they could, on the terms demanded
by the Bell people.

At tho monthly meeting of the Commer

were discussed. The first was that of con
nection with the Independent telephone
companies operating In western Iowa and
the second that of holding a county fair
In Council Bluffs. The meeting decided
that the business interests of the city de
manded connection with the Independent
telephone lines, but on the second question
the general opinion was that It waa too
lata In the season to consider holding a
county fair this year, but that it was a
good proposition to push along and boost
for 1905.
The consideration of the telephone propo

Sheriff Touched for His Roll.
Pickpockets are evidently no reepeotors
of persons, and even, an officer of the law
Is not immune from their wiles. Sheriff
Stewart of Shelby county, while waiting
for his train at the Great Western depot
on South Main street yesterday afternoon,
fell a victim to one of the light fingered
gentry, who succeeded in abstracting the
officer's pocketbook, containing $10 in caah
and several checks.
Sheriff Stewart did not discover his loss
until the thief had ample time to make
his escape. When he missed the pocketbook
he solicited the assistance of Sheriff Can
ning. The pocketbook, minus the cash,
but with the checks intact, was found In
an alley near the depot. Sheriff Stewart
was so chagrined over being touched for
hla pocketbook that be requested the mat
ter be kept quiet.
