Tha democrat of Douglas county are la
trouble, and the worst of It la they do not
Mm to be able to tell Just how they are go
ing to get out. The difficulty arises over the
nominations of the county convention of
candidate for the legislature. It la said
that out of the twelve candidates nomi
nated nine of them belong to one religious
denomination, and an oversight waa made
by not placing a representative of the
labor vote In the lineup.
Already it haa become known that Frank
J. Burkley, nominated for senator, refuses
to accept the nomination. This has caused
considerable solicitude of Itself.
Shortly after the convention some astute
Individual discovered the state of affairs
existing and hurried to his leaders with a
tale of woe. Since, that time numberless
democrats. It Is said, have voiced the senti
ment that the legislative ticket can never
be elected unless some changes are made.
But there the difficulty arises. There
eeems to be no way of changing the ticket
untena home of the candidates can be pre
vailed on to resign, and all of them are
yearning for a term In the law-making
body of the state.
"Who Is the man that Is willing to sacri
fice his ambitions upon the altar of the
party T" That Is the question which Is
dally asked, and to, the answer comet h not.
But something must be done, that Is cer
tain. Of course the filling of vacancies
upon the ticket caused by resignations.
If there are any, will be In the hands of
the county committee and that committee
Is waiting with baited breath, for some
of the candidates to speak and proclaim
to alt the world that he la the man who
lays down his ambitions. , .
Same Named ky Accident.
A well defined rumor has got abroad In
the land that the candidates on the ticket,
at least some of them, got there by ac
cident and that If the slate had not been
broken In the convention the result of the
nominations would have been otherwise.
One well posted democrat said If a slate Is
made and broken the convention Is not
responsible for the ticket which comes out
of the mill, and thus the members of the
convention are not taking the blame for
the result of the nominations very much
to heart, but are waiting for developments
Imply as on-lookers.
C. J. Smyth, csndldate for district dele
gate to the national democratic conven
tion, said:
"The men on the ticket are all good men
and while, I believe there will be some
changes In the ticket before election I do
not believe that It will be Improved upon
very much. I do not know there will be
any withdrawals, but I understand there
is likely to be a revision of the legislative
ticket. There Is ample time, howevei", for
that between this and election and I do
Dot .believe the matter has been considered
to any great extent by anyone. I had not
beard before that there were so many
candidates of one religious persuatlon."
