H. V. Jones of the Commercial West, a
recognised crop statistic ian, who has been
making a tour of me nhat belt says:
"I want you to he pr para.u lor a sensa
tion In winter wheat. 1 mean by this the
rrop Is In such a condition that by June
10 It can go to pirex if the weather before
that date Is not ail tignt. The sensation
will come from )lilo, Indiana and Michi
gan, anyway. The hgures of the state re
port are not low enougn, for the farmers
five lr 40 per cent, when the figures nhoul.i
e 10 or it per cent. Eight mates east of
the Rockies my give tV).(Kj.'ai bushel
yield leas than last year. Missouri i alone
showing a slightly better crop than for
Maryland and Virginia look well and
are most normal In the country, except
parts of Kansas. Kentucky Is bpotted. At
beet the country will raise 20,ia.0.o.i bushels
lees than last year and perhaps tjo.Oou.ijxj if
the weather Is unfavorable. There Is very
little growth to wheat for the season. Sep
tember wheat may break 4 or 6 cents If we
have warmer weather, but the country
may realise early the moderate orosuects.
and September wheal may nut go unuer 9)
cents.
Snow's weekly report says there Is not
yet sufficient data received to warrant a
prediction of the general average of con
ditlon In winter wheat, hut It Is safe to
say that public and private sources of re
ports would give condition for May 1 as
below April 1. flnow thinks the best that
can be expected, with most favorable
weather, will be considerably below the
normal.
Rroomhall cables Russian report Is In
snd shows generally favorable weather
with drouth locally only In' spots. The
winter growing has been well and the
spring seeding is partly finished and the
prospects good. The Minnesota report for
the week ending Mar 1 Is favorable. The
Illinois special report out gives for ten
representative counties 13 per cent of area
killed by winter, flood or drouth. The
mun will ho Vfln otal l strum normal and
only four times In 'history of reporting has
It been so small. .

73 cars last week and 123 cars a year ago.
An Improved cash demand and continued
small receipts were responsible for a firm
tone In com earlv In the day. A firm tone
prevailed at the close. July opened a shade

PENNSYLVANIA SELLS RATHER FREELY

NEW YORK, May S.-Th sluggishness
and naxrowneas of the stock market was
even more notable today than on previous
days this week. The movement of prices
was so slight as to offer little basis for
comment. United States Steel preferred wiie
somewhat relieved from the pressure to
which it has been recently subjected end
Pennsylvania was rather freely sold with
the dividend off. This stock held firmly
yesterday, presumably on account of tl.e
desire of holders to collect the cash divi
dend and the unwillingness of bears to re
main short of the stock over the dividend
period, since they are obliged to pay the
accruing dividend. There waa only such
buying of stocks as seemed necesvarv to
prevent the sagging tendency which Is nor
mal to a stagnant innrki-t. The news of the
day had little effect either way.
The newa from London of tho flotation of
a Japanese loan of IfHO.oiw.Ourt, of which New
York Is expected to take half, was accepted
as another evidence of the real ahundan.-e
of capital resources here and tne money
market waa quite unaffected by these pros
pective claims on It. The advance In Sugar
wait tajten as explanatory of yesterday's
strength In Sugar, but it was not follow'e.l
up today. Railroads reporting weekly gross
earnings showed declines without exception
for the fourth week In April.

CATTLiF There was a very moderate run
of cattle at all points thla morning, but
there was no Improvement In the market,
Packers seemed to be rather Indifferent
and as a result trading was slow, with
nrlcea about the same ss yesterday.
The beef steer market could bo quoted
generc-'lv steady but slow. Buyers did not
take hold with any enthusiasm except oc
caalonally In the case of good to choice
handy weight cattle, which sold without
difficulty at good steady prices. Heavy
cattle, unless choice, and the medium and
common grades of all weights were slow
sale and barely steady. The morning was
well advanced before a clearance waa made.
The cow market showed very little change
from yesterday. Buyers ail wanted a lew,
and p. offerings were very limited It waa
not Ions: before the Dens were emptied.
Anything In the way of good to choice light
weight cows or belters were picked up at an
early hour, but common stuff was not par
ticularly brisk.
There Is nothing new to report of bulls,
veal calves and stags, prices remaining
nractlcallv unchanged.
There waa a moderate run of stockers
and feeders, and as the demand from the
country yesterday was tajriy gooa, an
things considered, the market today held
steady. All the speculators were willing to
take a few, so that everything at all de
sirable waa soon out of first hands. Com
mon stuff was more or less neglected the
same as usual, representative sal

extreme cases aoron sales may look even
