SEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS Declining Teodicy Armtsd, but llgrkit Contirnti Listlest and Apalhitio. UNITED STATES STEEL THE VOST ACTIVE Aaother Kote Issaed by the Sabsldlary yadlrate of the Metropolitan street Railway Company for Relmboraemeat. NEW YORK. April 2 -Today's stock market was even more listless and apa- hetlc than that of yesterday. The tree declining tendency ot yesterday was ar- rwtea. but this discouraged rather than fostered activity. What the traders re quired Is a movement of prices, whether up or down. The arrest of the decline. hererore. prompted the retirement of the light contracts that had been put out un tie short side. United States steel pre ferred was the most active stock and its recovery was In face of the practical con firmation of the report prevalent yesterday of the early dissolution of the preferred stock conversion syndicate on which the slock declined then. The second mortgage bonds were sold down In the early niarkut to the extent of a point. Another note Issue today by the sub sidiary syndicate of the Metropolitan Street Railway company was said to be for the reimbursement of the parent com pany for Improvements already made and for which the bonds provided could not be msrketed. An initial engagement ot gold for Thursday s steamer was made today and bills sold In the exchange market were supposed to be for other shipments In contemplation. Weekly gross earnings of railroads reporting wore lower than last year and the net Increase for March reported for the Atchison was without effect on that stock. The weekly bulle tin of the weather bureau on crops waa not a helpful factor In spite of the Im proved condition reported In the western part of the winter wheat belt. The recovery of a large fraction In United States 8teel preferred was the only movement of any significance In the day's market. The closing was heavy and stag nant. Bonds were Irregular. The local demand and also the snipping demand was brisk and trading ruiea active,- with prices a little stronger all around. buyers were out at an early hour and It was nut long before the cattle Dega.n moving toward me scales, and, in feci, the bulk of the early arrivals was soon out of first hands. The market on corn fed steers could safely be quoted strong and active. As Is gen erally the case under such circumstances. many of tne more desirable grades sold at prices that looked as mucn as 6al0c higher. The general market, though, is best described by calling ll active and strong. There were a good many cattle ottered of better quality than the general run. several bunches selling sa high as 85.0U. and this Improvement in the quality of course makes tne maraei appear oeiier on paper. Tle cow maraer. waa aiso active ana strong, with something strictly choice In the way of ugnt-weigni neuers pernaps a little higher. Trading was brisk from start to finish and there did not seem to be any too many on sale to meet the re quirements of the trade, so that a good cearance was made. bulls, veal calves and stags all sold at fully as good prices as were paid yester day. There were very few stockers and feed ers included In the offerings and most of those that did arrive were rather lacking In Quality. Anything at an desirable could safely be quoted steady and something choice might nave sold a nine stronger owing to the scarcity ot that class. Repre sentative sales: BEEF 8TEF.RS. The market opened about steadv. but gained In activity and strength an the morning advanced until the market was strong to a nickel higher than yesterday market. The sales made early were largely around 84.75. hut the later Improvement made the hulk of the hogs sell from $4.7.i to $4.80, with the choicer loads going largely from $4.80 to $4.90. The less desir able loads sold from 84.75 down. Salesmen were complaining to some extent about the way the light hogs were selling, ami by light weights they mean those much under 200 pounds. The demand for that class Just at present Is not very brisk and unless very choice they have to sell considerably under the bulk or tne nogs. The extreme close of the market waa a trifle wenk. as packers apparently had their more urgent orders filled and took advan tage of that fact to pound the market on the late arrivals to some extent. The late sales were largely nt $4.75 sAnd $4.77H and It took something strictly choice to bring bet tcr than that. Representative saies: No. At. Bb. Pr. No. At. sh. Pi.
