f season owing to the extremely cold and
disagreeable weather that was experienced.
The Utter part of the week, though there
was a decided change for the better In
weather conditions and trade showed a
corresponding Improvement. Merchants
have been doing considerable complaining
about the cold, backward season, but still
they are not at all discouraged, as they
are aonfldent that as soon as conditions
are right the trade will be fully up to
expectallona
Wholesalers have of course felt the effects
of slow trade In the country and have been
doing very little Immediate business. Ad
van oe buslneee. however, has been moving
along at a very satisfactory pare and In
fat baa been running way ahead of last
year In moat cases.
Collections are a trifle quiet, as would

So far as the market Is concerned there
Is comparatively little to be said outside

Wholesale grocers report the volume of
business laat week as being all that could
reasonably be expected under existing con
dltllons. In regard to the market most
lines are held in a strong position and
many of them have an upward tendency.
Among these la sugar, 'i here have been
no changea In the market Itself since
last report, both raws and refined being
quoted steady. Refineries, though, report
hvavy withdrawals and at New Orleans
they are oversold from a week to ten
days. Kallroads as yet have come to no
understanding regarding rates from the
east and south and It Is generally under
stood that the question will not come up
for discussion again until Monday or
Tuesday of this week, at which time It
la thought some settlement will be reached.
Jobbers say that no matter on what basis
an agreement ta reached It will have a
tendency to advance prices lCKril&c per luu
pounds. Another factor that will tend to
force prices upward Is ths late, cold spring,
which will necessarily make the fruit and
berry season shorter than usual. Present
prospects are for an exceptionally large
yield and in that event prices on sugar
would naturally be expected to advance
and If not It mill be a question of getting
supplies.
The cheese market eased oft a lttle last
week and probably still lower prices will
prevail aa the sesson approaches when
new grass cheese will be on the market.
While there hss been no change In the
market on rope, the raw fiber haa advanced
In New York H'&'V per pound. For that
reason an advance In the prtce of rope In
the near future would cause no surprise.
The coffee market ruled firmer last week
and the decline at the latter part of the
previous week was more than offset. The
market la now fully of a cent above the
low point reached just sfter the Sully fall
ure Receipts In New York are consider
ably less thn they were a year ago. The
general Impression prevails that higher
r rices are liable to be seen In the neur
uture. Reports received from reliable
frwuxcee Indicate tbat the grow lug crop to
Brasll will be considerably less than a
year ago.
There was quite a demand for dried
fruits last week. The market on-raisins
shows a downward tendency, and the same
is true of prunes. In spite of Ibe fact
that prunes are going into consumption at

fast enough from ths coast to satisfy pack
ers and they are now accepting offers
which only a short time ago the refused
to entertain.
Changes In canned goods during the week
under review have been of minor Impor
tance. Spot tomatoes have eased off a
little, the loss amounting to about t cents
per dosen. Future stock, however. Is being
firmly held at the prlcee that have been
ruling for some time past. Corn Is un
changed and peas are being pushed forward
ward and aa a result there la an easier
feeling In the market.
There Is a brink demand for fancy lines
of groceries, more so In fact than ever
before. Olives are moving out very freely
and there Is every prospect of higher prices
ruling in me near ruiure. in iuci, prices
have already been advanced 5-ijlO cents per
gsllon.
There has been no change In the fish mar
ket so far as quotations go, and the de
mand has been fully up to expectations.
Cod In particular has been moving out at
a brisk rate and jobbers say that although
prlcea are rather high there Is no pros
pect of lower quotations lor some weeks
to coma
Dry Goods taovlaat Slowly.
Dry goods Jobbers experienced rather a
dull time laat week. They were not sur
prised at that, however, for retailers- of
course have aold comparatively little of
their stock of spring and summer lines
an das a result are In no position to do
any slsing up. Trade with retailere on
Friday and Saturday, however, was about
the beat of the season and gave them
some idea of what trade will be when
more settled weather arrives. They are
doing no worrying about business condi
tions, for they say thst people have money
and will be willing to spend It when the
proper time comes.
There have been practically no quotable
changes In the market since last report.
The situation is luuca the same, la (act.
all Indications pointing to a strong market
throughout the season, with the possibility
of quite a shortage developing In popular
lines toward the end of the year.
While immediate business Is rather quiet
with Omaha lubbers, they say that ad
vance orders are coming In much more
rapidly than they were a year ago, and
that taking the season as a whole they
have broken ull previous records. That
being the case, they naturally are doing no
complaining about the prospects for the
future.
Leather Goods Only Fair.
The leather goods trade la only fair. The
same aa hus been the case all the spring,
the weather has been too cold to do much
with low shoes, and as the majority of
people now wear that kind of shoes during
the summer, retailers have been doing
very little business. With warm weather,
however, they are not afraid of being dis
appointed, and as a result they are quietly
waiting for warm weather to appear. The
latter part of last week they did a good
business, whlrh In a measure made up for
the dullness of the early pari or me went.
There hus been some demand for rubber
goods for immediate shipment, but nothing
at all rushing. Advance orders for till
rubbers are still coming In, but it seems
that the majority of merchants have al
ready placed their orders, so that traveling
men have rather a bard lime to find a
customer.
Advance orders for leather goods are also
coming In In good shape, consldtring the
time of year, but traveling men think they
will meet with better succcita after the
weather Improves and retailers bcKln to sell
what stock they already have on hand.

Roosevelt has selected Judge Ueekman
Wlnthrop of the court of the first Instance,
Philippine Islands, to succeed William H.
Hunt as governor of the Island of Porto
Rico. The appointment haa not been an
nounocd officially, but probably will be in
a short time. Judge Wlalfcxop is from New

turns from furnaces throughout the coun
try show the strong statistical position of
pig iron In the market. The month of
March was especially favorable to the
makers of Iron. The quick and sharp re
covery of the Iron trade has been Utile
short of marvelous. Indicating the poten
tial vitality with which the entire Industry
Is charged. Aside from tho steel making
furnaces It will be noted the production of
merchant furnaces decreased over 102,000
tons during Maroh and during the same
time stocks on furnace banks decreased
74,000 tons, showing an Increased movement
of 170,000 tons Into consumptive channels
during March.
Producers are drawing a great deal ot
satisfaction from this condition.
