that the corn I not all out of the farmer'
'liands and that the Omaha market la In
line with other markets, and a little more
than In line. The speculative business on
the other hand was of very little amount.
The week has been too fold for wheat
growth and poor for germl nation, but fairly
good for farm work.. Killing- frosts did
damage in the. Ohio valley last night and
a i Bprlngflcld, III. The rains 'In Kansas
.Wednesday and today are the principal
natter of consideration In the wheat pita
arid led to considerable ' liquidation.- The
only strength comes from, the, northwest,
where some buying was done, it Is thought
on bullish advices from Jones,, who Is In
Kansas and Oklahoma
Corn this aeason of the year should nat
urally get back to the rules of supply and
demand. Armour Is-believed to have con
cluded Ills May opera-tlon, but no one Is
aure. Valentine bought, ,500,000 bushels of
Way, Wednesday. The poor quality of the
contract corn still disturbs the market.
The Nebraska City elevator In Chicago hus
teen declared irregular by the board of
directors over the grading of corn. It
holds 4-10,000 bushels of No. 2 corn, 64.000
bushels of contract wheat and 10.000 bushels
of corn. Liverpool was '; lower on wheat
and c lower on corn, and Is now so ensy
that It is not affet'-ed by American weak
ness. The May wheat opened almost a cent
stronger thin Wednesday's close and eased
off from ifpftc to !e. and later recovered
to the half. New July ouened at H6-V,
broke to 84Tc, and returned by noon to
S-ic. May corn ranged from 5oc to 49tc
ami at noon stood 4,c.

CHICAGO. April 21 Paucity of receipts
northwest and persistent reports of dam
age south wrt caused a firm close here to
day In wheat. Compared with Isst night
July wheat Is ScV higher; corn la up Sc,
and oats are off 'tt'. provisions show a
gain of IH'&K'c. I'nder the Influence of
decreased receipts In the northwest wheat
opened firm. July at .VB5c. A leading
factor throughout the early trading was
the strength of the northwestern markets.
Commission houses reported more outside
buying orders than for several weeks.
Houses with northwestern connections were
buyers on damage reports from the south
west. Minneapolis reported good prospects for
Urge Bale. On a late decline In corn thera
was some realizing In wheat, which re
sulted In July selling down to 84V, but
subsequent covering by shorts worked the
Srlce up to 854c. The market closed Arm.
lay sold betwee.i S9c and 84c and closed
at K)c. Clearancea of wheat and flour
were equal to 157.100 bushels. Primary re
ceipts were 184,000 bushels, agaJnat 248.000
bushels a year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth
and Chicago reported receipts of 104 cars,
against 137 cars last week and 141 a year

Corn ruled firm early; later there was a
demand, which eent May up lHc. The close
was about steady. July opened a shade to
Ho higher at 48Tf4c, sold between 4Sa
4c and 49c and closed at 48Tc. May
ranged between Ha and 60c and closed
at 49'tje, a net gain of c. I .oca I receipts
were 1.11 car, with 41 of contract.
The market in oats was Influenced to a
considerable extent by the action of other
grains. The close was easier. After open
ing V5V lower at Mii3To July ranged
between 36a and oTH'Wo and closed at
the bottom. Local receipts were 64 cara.
Provisions were easier at the start owing
to weakness In the hog market. In spite of

UNION PACIFIC LEADS MARKET UPWARD
Coalers Are the "abject of a Ilemoa-
atratloa Which Carries
Them to a Higher
Level.
NEW YORK - April 21 The minds of
speculators seem to still be befogged today
over the vista of new developments In the
Northern securities conn si ana ine con
sequence was that for the most part they
retrained from operating. The stock mar
ket was almost entirely one of specialties
and the peculiar grounds an which this
class of securities usually moves were? not
always manifest. The market started up
wards, led by Union Pacltin, which seemed
to be helped by the granting of a temporary
Injunction by a New Jeraey court against
carrying Into effect the plan of distribution
of Northern Securities assets. The ma
jority vote by the Northern Securities
stockholders In favor of the plan seemed
to check the advance In Union I'aolnc, but
It held Its nrm too.
The influence In 1 nlted States steel pre
ferred which received the most recognition
was Jhe agreement amnng ore producers
to reduce prices and to seek further to
come to an agreement to limit output. The
coalers were the subjects of a demonstra
tion which carried them to a higher level,
the high priced members of the group
notably so. Today a demand wua said to
be due to the very active demand for an
thracite which has followed the sprlag
reduction In prices.
For a dav of a dividend declaration
Amalgamated Copper was unprecedently
dull and sluggish. The stock lost on
the day, with the maintenance of the ex
isting dividend rate, can money joanea
here as low as 1 per cent and time loans
for all periods showed a continued softness
of tone. The stock market closed Irregular
and below the best.
Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par
value, 31,125,010. I 'nlted States bonds were
unchanged on can.

CATTLE There was a good run of cattle
here this morning for a Thursday, but the
receipts were the smallest of the week to
date. Trains were rather slow In arriving,
but the market was active and steady to
strong all around. All the early arrivals
were disposed or in good season.
Beef steers made up the bulk of the offer
ings the, same as has- been the ease all the
week and tbs market . could be quoted
strong on the good, tidy, lightweight cuttle
and steady on the heavy, plain cattle and
the comt.icner kinds of all weights. Trad
ing was active on the more desirable
bunches and not Very brisk on the others.
Still a good clearance was made at a rea
aonablv early hour, with the exception of
some ot tne late arrivals, wnicn aeiayea ine
close to aulte an extent. The prices paid
today for the tidy, lightweight cattle were
fully steady with those In force at the close
of last week and other cattle have also
about regained the decline of the early part
of the week.
The cow market was active and steady to
strong. Lightweights on the heifer order
that were rat and or gooa quality so 1,1
readily at strong prices. Common and
heavy paunchy cows were not much dif
ferent from yesterday. Trading, though,
was fairly active all around, so that prac
tically everything was sold at an early
hour. . . ....... . .
Bulls, veal caives ana stags nia nor snow
much change from jesterday, but they
could s&fely be Quoted fully steady and
fslrly active.
There were only a few dockers and faed-
ers on sale this morning, and owing to the
limited demand from the country this week
not many were wanteo. 000a siurc soia
readily at steady prices, while the common
kinds were auii. nepreaenuauve sates;

HOOS Receipts of hegs were not as
eevy as they were yesterday, but other
markets were quoted lower and price eased
off here In sympathy. The) market could
bo quoted weak to 5c lower, or generally
2c lower. The demand seemed to be In
good shape and as a result trading was
fairly active after the first round and the
bulk of the arrivals was disposed of In good
season. The most of the sales went at
34.77WH4.80. with the choicer loads irninr
largely ht 3.82r4.8T. The commoner kinds
sold from $4.-75 down. Inferior hogs were
slow sale this morning, as none of the
pacKers seemed to enre whether they got
any of that kind or not, and as a result
It was a hard matter for salesmen to get
sansiaciory prices ior mat class of stun.

SHEEP Rerelnts
Of
sheep
were much
more moderate this mornlna and no nnr
iioumr cnange in tne market took place.
The demand did not seem to be quite as
brisk ss on some days, owing no doubt to
the heavv receinta that arrived the ure-
cedlng daya of this week. Packers, though,
took hold fairly well, and Just about steady
prices were paid for' everything at all de
sirable. 'The cHpb4d yearlings that sold
yesterday for 85.20 brought the same money
this mornlntr and rllnnnd ewe snlil n t
$4.6(j4,7fi. All the deairable grades were
noon out 01 nrst hands, but it was little
late before the common stuff was ail dis
posed of.
Lambs were also a little slow, but about
steady. Clipped lambs sold as high as
