While the bulllsn aovernment report was
discounted Tuesday and the dealers be

that they were predicting a beansn report

ome almost sensational reports oi on a
condition. Logan A Bryan had reports of
thla nature from Michigan, onto ana sec

would show a very rapid deterioration oi
the condition, i rom western Kansas came
the report that tne government, report
an overestimate, and In central inoin
very low condition was eaia to sxisi, uein
almost, total failure. These reports causeu
a large oovering of aborts. Chicago ad
vanced at one time aooui o "
opening, the range In May being WHO to
HC and in new July $70 to Hc Omaha
was not so strong. The government report
shows the lowest April condlUon for nine
teen years. The explanation oi mt uhii
of Tuesday Is given a traditional, a break
alwav lollowlng oiflclal figure. An
ticipatory buying and heavy llquiaauon

gi Hiding. Seeding la said to be very bad,
with no possibility of getting In on the
Red river and other ground before May
1. and an acreage decrease of SO to 40 per
cent. Chicago cash business 1 very slow,
with little wheat demand.
Tuesday In Chicago lui cars anu o,"w
bushels of contract corn were made ana
the receipts show a fair proportion oi con
tract. Omaha May went off from the open

to 4Kic. A. B. Jaqulth bid the latter figure
for 100.000 bushels, but did not get It. rh
corn strength was largely due) to wheat.

EFFECT OF RUSSIAN DISASTER IS FEARED
Reports of Large Steel Raporte aad

Islseset oa the
Market.
NEW YORK, Arril 13. The dull and un
certain stock market of today wss the
natural outcome of the course of the pre
vious market. The rather violent break In
I'nion Pacific yesterday was regarded today
as uue to a raid. Tne more careful con
sideration of the part taken by the at
torney general In the Northern Securities
case at St. Paul modified the first Impres
sion that the government was opposing It-e-lf
on principle to the Union Pacific s ef
fort to recover its former holding of North
ern Pacific. But the action 01 the stock
yesterday on that supposition caused a
deeply grounded Impression that tha re
cent mysterious accumulation of Union Pa
clflo is based on the hope of advantage to
the stock from the end sought in the
suit. The Influence of foreign markets was
on the side of reaction, and there were
fears that the Russian naval disaster might
result In further depression on the Paris
market.
The cancellation of an option on 67,000
ton ot pig iron by tne united oiaies oieei
orporatuin, ana tne reason given inai 11
tas feared that the purchase would Invite
he resumption of blast furnaces, was not
of reassuring effect on the steel trade. Re
newed strength In tne wheat maraei.
pointed to yesterday's weakness as due to
prollt-taklng on the government's report.
Ith tne Ultimate erreci situ 10 De counita
with. On the other hand, reports were
current of a large export of steel products
or March, and the very cneerrui view 01
the trade outlook expressed by the Iron
Age, and published near the close, had an
lniDortant effect In rallying the market. So
die! the Increase In the dividend on Reading
second preferred, which gave point to tne
reports of large accumulation of anthra-
lte at tne reaucea spring price scneuuie.
The failure of the threatened bear demon
stration to appear prompted some covering
of shorts by room traders, and the closing
was Arm. The dullness of the trading was
practically unrelieved to the close, tsonds
were Irregular. Total sales, par value,

CATTLE There was another liberal run
of cattle here thla morning, Uiough not
nearly as many aa yesterday, as will be
seen from the table of receipts above. In
view of the liberal receipts packers were
rather bearish and ths morning was well
advanced before much business was trans
acted.
The same as yesterday, the big end ot
the receipts consisted of corn-fed steers,
and the market was. slow in opening and
In fact was not very active at any time.
At the beginning packers picked uo a few
of the choice light-weight cattle at prices
but little lower than yesterday, while the
heavy and commoner kinds were arouna
6310o lower than yesterday. As the morn
ing advanced the situation did not Improve
and In fact the close was a little weaker.
Owing to the slow opening and the lack of
activity an day, it waa late berore even
the bulk of the cattle was disposed of.
The cow market was also a little weaker
this morning. Receipts were not heavy, but
the downward tendency of prices on steers
naturally affected the market on butcher
stock to some extent. The light cows and
helfttrs of good quality sold about steady,
but others were 6ttl0o lower than yester
day. Trading was not very active on any
thing Dut tne oest ana ior tnit reason it
was a little late before a clearance waa
made.
xuus wvrv cariainiT no nii'ifl uian Firaar,
but veal calves sold without trouble at
good, steady prices.
The demand for stockers and feeders
continued In good shape and speculator
were out In good season, bidding fully
steadv prices for all desirable aradea
something strlcuy choice could be quoted
strong, iiepreaentative saies:
BEEF STEERS.

HOGS There was another liberal run of
hogs In sight this morning and tha ten
dpney of prices was downward. Ths de
cline amounted to KflOc. the 'bulk of hogs)
selling t tt M4.R-'. The choice load
sold from 14 Ri tn 34 9". The commoner
kinds sold from It SO down. Trading waa
fairly active nt the decline, as aalramrn
did not see any hup of preventing the de
cline. ' It was some time, however, bforo
a clenrsnce was made owing to tha liberal
receipts.
There was no particular change In tho
Litter part of the market, unless possibly
a trifle weaker feeling or! the extremo
light weights. Most everything was dis
