NEW TORK. The stock market wag at a
standstill tor the greater pitrt of the uay
but lost Utile ground. Prices started up
ward with some vigor and there was an
effort to extend the advance by indicating
new points fur advance, but the muveinem
met with less success today. The mr
Ing up of prices wis lees hold and com
prehensive, and the stocks chosen for lead
ers had less influence on sentiment, the
list of most effective market lenders having
been pretty well run over by the succession
of movements already ' made. The conse
quence waa a return to a dull and sluggish
market, but with an undertone of good
resistance and an apparent disposition to
await favorable developments.
It Is probable that the hesitation of the
market was due In part to the pending
hearing at St. J'aul tomorrow of the motion
to enjoin the pro rata distribution of the
Northern Securities assets. The almot
buoyant tone of the London market helped
the opening strength here. Abundance of
money Is reported available In all the
world's markets hut the course of surplus
funds seems to be. towards Paris. Ship
ments were made of gold today with the
destination of London, snd ll.0n0.0O gold
was accumulated here. The money market
In London Is relaxing and an early reduc
tion In the Hank of England discount rate
Is looked fjr. Gmla and cotton exports
fell more than tJl.OoO In value below those
of March last yenr
Railroad officials spesk confidently of the
outlook for future traffic, but admit a de
cline In the present volume. A renewal of
