The manipulation of the corn market Is progressing. Today Armour personally bought l.Oofi.OOO bushels In the Chlcngo corn pit. Valentine openly bought 6u.(M bush- ' els and la thougnt to have taken I.OiO.OviO wore through commission houses. Wednes lay corn for future delivery In Chicago went off fo and the caah stuff also de clined In aume caaea that much. This was during the early part of the session and the crowd thought that Armour wa being routed by the large receipts of good quality Nebraska corn. But later when the May rallied 2o the Idea changed, and It was de cided that Armour bad done It to break the price of a pot stuff. At any rate he bought all the good corn at So under, the Monday price. v Chicago Mar ranged from 66io to SSc, with the weak spot early In the session. Omaha opened up He weaker than the close " nf Wednesday and On offers declined an other cent. Later there was some buying - around 6oe, but the market later eased off to tdc again. Only twelve mills are running today In Minneapolis snd the flour demand la the poorest In the history of thai market. The winter wheat crop conditions seem to " be generally better. The weather la favor- - hi a fop rrnln, whBit mnA r,ln, arm r - V' ported from Kansas, Oklahoma, generally ' over the Ohio vaier and locally In Nc- ' braska and Iowa. Snow Is reported In 'Minnesota and the northwest. Spring aeedlng has begun; but Is delayed. The sunDlr of contract wheat In Chl- v rago, allowing for what Is there, but reported - sold to millers Is only Bnfl.nno. ' This will; It Is thought, be used up during " a month. The shorts are getting uneney "and it Is the general opinion that the ' Julyj shorts have nothing to rely on but new receipts of wheat, and with the poor reports from Ohio, the first red wrreat district, and Kansas, from where comes the earliest winter wheat, the prospect la poor. Omaha did not speculate In wheat. May ripened at 95c, eased off to 94'ic, and ." by noon had recovered and reached 95Sc. The new July ranged from 87o to 86c. ' SEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS United States Steal isMhs Fscktone of the Vref. ' " SECURITIES INCLINED TO HOLD BACK ettlement of the fJalldln Trades Labor Dlapate In New York City Helps the Metal Market. NEW YORK. April 7.-There were signs of stateness in the market upward move ment today and the action of prices be came decidedly Irregular during the day. This might have been even more marked had It not been for the strong sustaining Influence of the persistent upward move ment of United Stales Steel preferred and the enormous absorption of the second mortgage bonds, which made the backbone of the whole market. . The auxiliary points of strength were few 'and mere not amongst the stocks of the Hist Importance. The most Important stocks were Inclined to hang back and showed the effects of realis ing on their recent advance, In spite of some items of news that might have helped their advance. Amongst these were good statements of February net earnings by all the railroads In the so-called Harrlman group, Including Union Pacific and South ern Pacific. The weather map and the crop news continue favorable to the south western grain carriers, but Missouri Pa cific. Wabash preferred. Rock Island and Atchison preferred were the only stocks to respond to an appreciable effect. The strength of the United States Steel securities was attributed to consideration of the quarterly report. The Indications given by It of Improvement In the trado helped slock of some Independent Iron and steel companies as well. Amalgamated Copper shared moderately In the strength of the metal stocks. The settlement of the building trades labor dispute In New York helped United States Steel by the promise of Increased requirements for structural material and was also the di rect cause of a spurt In the United States Realty and construction stocks. The meet ings of the steel pools In progress In this city to fix prices seemed to be a stimulating Influence as well. The takings - of the United States Steel second r.ortgage bonds were alleged to be of an Investment char acter an improvement was reported In the bond market generally and In demand for some high grade Investment railroad stocks, preferred stocks Included. The extreme ease of money Is a natural Incentive to this kind of buying. Money was loaned over the end of the year toda at as low as 4 per cent per annum, which makes the holding of many well secured railroad stocks and bonds at tractive. The outward movement of gold in these circumstances causes little un easiness. Yesterday's arrival at San Fran cisco of $3,6o0.0i0 In Japanese gold Indicates how the outward drain Is made up at other points. The heavy contraction In loans by the banks of England and France reported today indicate the reflux tendency In these money markets following the quarterly settlements and gives small promise of any Immediate demand for money. Iondon was a buyer of stocks here this morning and helped the early advance. Only In scattered instances did the rise In stocks reach as much as a point and the activity of the market was much cur tailed In the latter part of the day. The bond market was active and Arm. Total Bales, par value, $4,9-0,000. United States 2s advanced ; the Ss registered, the old 4a and the new 4s coupon , and the new 4s registered H per cent on call. Hi Totals 4.129 8,804 8,790 CATTLE Receipts of cattle were not oulte so heavy as yesterday, but still there were plenty to meet the requirements of the trade. A steady rain certainly did not help the market nor the appearance of the cattle and besides that several -trains were Into In arriving, which delayed the market tcr quite an extent. The best cattle sold at about steady prices, but aside from, those the market was slow and a little lower. There -was no great amount of activity In the beef steer market this morning. Buy ers were a little slow In starting out owing to the heavy rain, and when thev did go to the yards they rode around and picked out the tidy, blocky cattle of good quality and -pa'd Juat about steady prices for them. After that was done the market was slow, with, prices shading a little lower than yes terday. The commoner the qunllty the harder it was to make a sale at satisfactory prices. Some-of the part fnt kinds were quite a little lower than yeaterday.' The late arrivals as-a general thing did not sell to as good sdvnntage as the early ones, ns packers had their more urgent orders filled. The cow market was also rteady to a little lower. Good lightweight 'cows and heifers of good quality sold In about yes terday's notches, tut heavy cows and the medium grades were Blow and a trifle lower. t anners sold In much the same notches tbey have for some time past. Trading was pot active at any time and the close of the market was slow, with prices a little weaker. Bulls sold 'at right arnund steady prices. Some of 4 he buyers seemed to want a few this morning 'and that helped out the mar ket tn quite an extent, veal calves sold at the same old prices. There were only a' few stonk cattle on sale, hut owing to the bad weather It did not . take many to meet the demand. The best grades sold about steady, but others were slow and we.ik. The general market was 6jJ loc lowar than yesterday and the Close was rather weak at the decline. Trading, though, was fairly active at the beginning, but .toward the close the market was not only wak but slow, and It was some time beforvJ all the late arrivals were disposed of. The bulk of the sales went at 84.9214 snd 84.95. with the choice loads selling largely nt 84.97W and 85." There was a very choice bunch on sale, though, that brought 85.05. The commoner loads sold largely tender 84 92H. though some of the late artlvals also had to sell from f4.9'Ji,4 down.
