LARGE TRANSACTIONS IN MONEY MARKET
Prices of Stocks Have Moved la aa
Irregular Way Darlna; the
Week, with Eaornsoas
Reartloas,
NEW TORK. April 1-Today't stock
market was an Insignificant atlair, as as
te be expected of a two-hour session be
tween two holidays. The fact that the
London market waa closed today waa an
aouitional Incentive to absentees on the
part of stock exchange members. The
urift of prices waa sluggish throughout.
The Pad tio stocks espeoiaily receded from
their recent prominence in the market
People's Oas suffered from a movement
to take pro tits on the recent considerable
rise and was a depressing Inlluence on
the general list. '1 he weather bureau's
crop bulletin and the weekly reviews of
the commercial agencies were not suf
(icletly cheerful to Induce any buying of
stocks, but there was no urgent pressure
to sell.
The bank statement revealed the large
transactions which have been going on
In the money market, but the mainte
nance of last week a full surplus by tho
offsetting of other Items and the extreme
ease now ruling In the money market pre
venetd any anxiety over the banking situ
ation. The cash Item reflected the recelpta
of government deposits from Interior banks
coming over from last week's operations.
The government deposits Included In the
deposit Item amount to 3u6,lu7,4tiO, compared
with 3-t6.948.100 last week. The expansion of
nearly 316.Outt.OiiO In the loan Item Is con
sidered corroborative of the rumors of
large loans contracted during the week
In connection with stock market opera
tions. Yesterday's payment of subscrip
tions to the 800,000,000 Pennsylvania note
issue probably figures In thla item also.
The market closed easy on a late selling
movement. Total sales of bonds par value
31.540,000. The) volume and character of
the transactions In the great Pacific and
transcontinental railroad stock give ample
warrant for the prevalent assumption that
Important operations are working out In
that Meld designed to establish flnnnclal
policies on the part of great forces of
railroad capital.
The feeling has crystallred In Wall street
that the dissolution of the Northern Se
curities company haa the effect of re-establishing
the conditions of the Northern
Pacific settlement as they were before the
formation of the Northern Securities
company. The one substantil basis for
the asaumptlon that such policies are
working out Is the continued large ab
sorption of Union Pacific a.ck. There was
a time when transactions in as large vol
umes aa this recently made In Union Pa
clflo might have been plausibly set down
to a purely speculative campalun, but thnt
was when a broad general limit
for stocks could be relied upon for quick
absorption of speculative holdings. Last
week's surmise that Morgan-Hill Interests
were taking the stock to balance the
Harrlman-Kuhn-Loeb holdings In Northern
Pacific and Great Northern was supple
mented this week by circumstantial as.er
tlone that St. Paul and Standard Oil In
terests were acquiring Union Pacific con
trol to assure a Pacific coast outlet for St.
Paul.
The transfer of government deposits to
New York In preparation for the Panama
canal payment has Increased the supplies
In this market. The expected outflow of
gold has been delayed. Railroad earnings
have made a better comparison with lust
year. An active demand Is reported for
copper. Improving conditions show In the
Iron and steel trade, but the prospect of
a poor quarterly report by the United
States Steel corporation and doubts over
the maintenance of the preferred dividend
have modified that Influence. The crop
nntlnnk mtitlnues. uncertain, but is not Vet
a dominant Influence. Renewed labor
troubles In the building trades In New
York are disquieting and gained added In
fluence on th stock market as the week
progressed. United States old 4s. new 4s
coupon and 3s registered have advanced
4. and the 8s coupon Vi per cent on call
during the week.

CArrLii There were no cattle on sale
this morning, but lor toe weua leoeipis
snow very ultle change lioin lust weua,
with ail incivuau ot auoul i.uuO Head over
tho coiresponuing week of lust year. For
the your to oau tnere la aiso very Hi lie
change iroin lust year, on some days the
recuipis show u angm increase and on out
ers a stnuii de-create, 'ihe change in either
direction aeluom goes much over a.vuo head.
The liberal receipts oi cattle me eariy
part ot last weea lud a tendency to breaa
the market. XuwurU the close oi the weea,
however, supplies were very moderate and
the weea closed with a stronger feenug
than was experienced in the miudle ot tne
wee a. As compured with a week aaro the
market on eieers in right around lOjjloo
lower. Heavy plain came have shown the
gttaiest dc-cnno, wniie udy block cattle of
good llesh and quality have shown the
least and are in the greatest demand.
Packers are still taking quality Into con
sideration more than limy generally do.
Good to choice steers are quotable from
14.au to 16, with something strlotly fancy a
little above that. Fair to good grades sell
from 34.16 to 34.60 and the warmed-up and
short-led cattle largely from 34.60 to 34.
The cow market was also affected to some
extent by the liberal supplies early In the
week and heavy cows snow a loss for the
week amounting to fully lvalue. Uood light
weight cows and heifers, however, are Juut
about steady, as the demand for that class
has been fully equal to the supply and each
aay s orrerings were pnntii up .n a hurry.
C'anners have been In limited suimly and
are selling in practically the xutne notches
they have for some time past. Oood to
choice cows and hellers ure quotable from
lit. 26 to 34. fair to kood from 32. uo to 33.13
and canners and cutters from 32 to 32.40.
Bulls have been alow sale all the week,
the same as they were last, and but little
chsngo In ruling prices have taken place.
The choice fat bul!s are selling largely
from 3- o to 33 26. with an occasional sale
above that. Most of the bulls that bring
much over 33.1, though, were sold In with
a load of steers. Uologna grades go largely
from 3-36 lo 32 86. Veal calves continue
in active demand at firm prices, best
grades selling as high as 36.75.
The supply of Blockers and feeders was
rather limited this week and prh-es held
Just about steady all the week. Desirable
fradea were active and others none too
risk. ti'iod to choice grades are quoted
from 3300 to 34.10. fair to good 3.140 to UoO,
and the commoner kinds from 3J.40 down.

1 IN IH
HCxiS There was rather a light run of
hoKS here this morning, even for a Satur
day, and the market opened about a nickel
higher. Trading was fairly active and the
bulk of the hogs sold at 36 U7' and 3r. 10,
with choice hogs golna; as htfc-h aa JV. 16.
The commoner loads sold from 35 06 down.
It waa not long before the bulk of the
offerings were disposed of, but toward ths
close trading became less active and some
of the late sales were hardly as good ss
the early ones. alont everything though
Was disposed of In fairly good se.ison.
For the week receipts have lieen very
heavy, there being an Increase over laat
week of about 72.U-6 head, and, as compared
with the same wek of laet year, there
Is an Incresse of sbout 20,(u head. Con
sidering this heavy run. the market has
held up In remarkably good snap Thurs
day proved to be the low cuv of the week,
and eiuce iltat lUum the tendency baa been
upward and, as compared with the close of
last week, he loss only amounts to 24(f5c.

iiieie were no Itetn arrivals ot
sheep tins morning, so a teat of the mar
aoi was not maae. Kor the week supplies
nave oteu muou smaller than tuey were
last week, but as compured with the cone
sponalnK wtck of lai year mere is the
small increase of auoui l.uoO head. Fur
tne year to date there la the enormous
gain of over luO.oOU head.
The market this wee has been In very
satisfactory condition. The general ten
dency of prices has been upward, though
on some days there waa a slight reaction,
backers all seemed to waul the belter
gradea and were Inclined to discriminate
against the common end -art lat stuff to
some extent. The general market on Iheep
can be quoted liiuZoo higher than the close
of last week. Quite a few clipped sheep
are beginning to show up In the receipts
and are selling about 6(KU.oc under wooied
stock of the same quality. In a short time
It Is expected that the bulk of the arrivals
will have the wool off.
The lamb market has been In fairly good
shape also and an advance of about ltxi?
16c Is noted for the week. The same as
with sheep, it is the better grades that
packers are anxious for and the common
stuff drags more or less.
