NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
Bmpention of Two Trust Corcpaniti Hit t
Chilling Effect.
NOMINAL'CAUSES FOR LACK OF ACTIVITY
Holidays Hailed as a Motive for Cur
tailment of Operations aad Market
Affected by Heaetloa front
Last Week.
NEW YORK, March 31 The suspension
of two trust companies, one in Cleveland
and ono in Boston, had a somewhat chining
eftect on speculation today. The penuency
ot tomorrow s Uood Frluay holi.iay was
Hal lea as a motive tor some curtailment ot
operations, and today's Jewish holiday ot
tue passover waa also the occasion of some
absences from the Btock exchange. Iheee
were the nominal causes of tiie decided fall
ing off In activity and the rather heavy
tone of speculation. 'ITtere were Indica
tions, however, that speculative sentiment
was effected by some reaction from the
strength of the earlier part of the week.
The oenlals given to rumors of purchases
of Union Pacific by St. Paul and to other
reports which have circulated on the ex
change were reinforced in their reactionary
ertct by the large distribution of stocks
which waa effected during the rise of yes
terdav and by the cessation of mugh of
the demand today.
The suspension of the trust companies
seemed dud to special causes and were of
little direct Influence on the market. The
coming out movement of gold Is expected
iZ Tun, to manr millions of dollars and In
the opinion of some exchange exports may
reach the amount of the remittance to be
made to Paris on account of the Panama
canal payment. The present abnormal ease
pf money In New York Is undoubtedly due
In part to the accumulation here of gov
ernment deposits In preparation for th
1 enama canal payment. In Paris, London
and Berlin the quarterly requirements for
April 1 are extraordinarily heavy, as re
vealed by this week's reports of the great
foreign banks. But with the turn of the
quarter a large reflux of funds to clrcul t
tion is looked for, with reaulthig money
rates, which will modify the pressure on
New York for gold.
The strong stocks today were amongst
the southern group and the soft coalers,
due to the reports of earnings. United
Btates Bteel reflected a more confident
feeling over the preferred division. Cover
ing of shorts rallied the market during the
latter part of the day, but the closing was
heavy.

juicm was a more moderate
run of cattle here this morning, tut null
there were enough on sale to meet "he
requirements .of the trade. Moat of the
steers sold In good seuson, but cows VM.re
slow and the day v 11a well aJ .ig bifore
the pens were cleared.
Parkers took hold of the cornfed steers
with more life this morning than they have
for several days. In fact, this was the
first day that some of the buyers acted
ns though they were at all anxious for
cattle. The difference In the market from
yesterday was more one of activity than
of price, though the market on desirable
grades could be quoted strong, with some
sales undoubtedly a little higher. On the
other hand, short fed and common kinds
were probably no more than steady.
The cow market was slow and around a
dimo lower than yesterday, except In the
case cf good lightwoight cows and heifers.
The samo as I.oa teen the cuae all the
week, packers have all Leen after the light
weight stuff of food quality, and such
kinds today sold at about steady prices
but the heavy cows and the medium grades
of all weights were slow and a dime lower.
Pulls were slow sale and, If anything
were a little lower in sympathy with the'
decline on cow stuff. Veal calves, though,
sold In practically the same notches they
havo for some time past.
The small rupply of stockers and feeders
In sight this morning changed hands with
out much trouble at about yesterday's
prices. Common stuff wua of course neg
lected, the same as usual, but the rrices
paid in the majority of cases did not show
any quotable change. Representative
