Drift. OMAHA. March 14, 1904. A reaction wag due in wheat and the mar ket a;ot it. In Chicago May began with a bread of one point and that much atrongar than the close of Wednesday, and by noon reached 93c for high. Now July gained l7o during the anme time. The. close was strong. September also Ruined strongly. Thla last future waa the only one which closed higher Wednesday and seems to be tht grain in which the new bull movement la being made. It Is as likely to be af fected by crop damages as are the hfghei priced futures, May and July. Old July at the close Wednesday had sold off 14c from the highest point and May waa 17c to the bad. Thla made a reaction probable and led to a covering by aborts and aome buying for Investment. The market for these rea sons opened with strength. The conditions in the southwest were better and Kansas City was weak on the continued ratna, but thla was offset by the poor crop talli from Indiana and Illinois. The growing weather Is said to show that many neljs will have to be replanted. In Indiana a scarcity Is reported of good corn for aeed. The Liver pool opening el so waa atronger and sup ported American markets. Omaha wheat advanced In line with Chicago. There Is a considerable short Interest waiting a chance to cover. The corn market drew Its strength from wheat. The Omaha crowd bid the May up H point. The eaae with which the corn market recovers shows a large short In terest and concentrated holdings. Corn as well ns oatsl especially in the May, is un supported and the market allowed to drift. Small recelpta are the order of the day In Chicago, but the eastern demand la also small, so that the market , does not strengthen materially. Opertttiout Sot Apparent Yeiterdkj. SPECULATORS PUZZLED BY RECENT SPURT t'ontlnned Ease of Money Offers Porno Inducements to the Holding; of Securities with Borrowed Knnda. NEW YORK, March 24.-A much smaller amount or business was transacted in the stock market today than on the two pre ceding daya and ih- market allowed the effect ot tne extensive realizing wlilcn had been effected on thoee daya and the elim ination ot a large portion of the ahort In terest from the market. There waa no evi dence of the large operations by powerful forces which kept tne market stimulated ye lord ay and the day before. The source and purpose of those operations have been a cause ot bewilderment even to the pro fessional traders, who have followed them eagerly to secure' a profit in the resulting rise. Several stocks were pushed up at dif ferent times, aa though to sustain (he mar ket. Among these were Amalgamated Copper, Brooklyn Transit and Erie. At the same time there waa a demand for London account, showing the uneasiness of uncov ered bears on Americans in .the Northern Securities merger. Ttia oontlnued activity In the curb market for Northern Pacific and Great Northern preferred carried them sharply downward. Great Northern pre ferred on the exchange dropped over 7 points, leaving a wide hreach in the valua tion placed on the stock for purposes of dis tribution of Northern Secuntlee; assets. Further rains In the winter wheat belt were of no help to stocks in face of the rise In the price of wheat futures. Condi tions still further approached the gold ex port point without affecting the money market. The decline In London discounts Increases the disposition toward French capital from there, and It is this demand reflected upon New York which Is expected to draw gold from here. Tho continued ease of money her With this prospect offers some Inducements to the holding of seourltles wlth-borrowert funds and la one of tho reasons offered for the Improved de mand for slocks. Southern Railway's funding of t't.i0,060 of obligations Into five-year bonds hurt the wtork. The weight of realising upon the whole market gained force and carried It down to the lowest at the close, which was weak. The bond market was Irregular and not so sctive. A blinding rain storm Interfered with the market to aome extent and made the cattle appear in about as bad form aa possible.,, Buyers, though, started out early and the-bulk of the offerings was auon disposed of. The market on corn-fed steers was gen erally steady. At the opening some of the cattle that Just suited buyers may have sold a little higher, but the general run rould not be quoted more than steady. Toward the cloae some of the leas desirable kinds were hardly steady and salesmen experienced, some difficulty in selling out at satisfactory prices. The cow market ruled active and steady to strong, with some of the desirable bunchea a little higher. All the buyers were out at an early hour and trading waa active, so that the bulk of the arrivals was disposed of In good season. The same as yesterday, good light weight heifers sold to the best advantage. There was no uuotable chanae In the prices paid for bulls. The demand atlll con tinues very limited and good fat bu is com mand but little more than the bologna grades. Veal calves, though, are active and firm. There were not very many stock-era and feeders on sale, and as the demand from the country yesterday was fairly good, buyera took hold quite freely In spite of the bad weather, and the market could bs c noted steady on all desirable grades.
