Fay Davis, supported by the Empire
Theater Stock company, will present Henry

recognized loader for several years. Tho
character of the Kmplro Stock company Is
well enough known to guarantee the excel
lence of her support. The play was pre
sented In London last season and was an
instantaneous success, and has been a win

BAXTER BACK FROM ORIENT
Former Omaha Officer Returns from
Scene of Hostilities, Intimating
, Japs Are Hopeful.
Major John E. Baxter, quartermaster, U.
8. A., was in ths city Sunday, a visitor
at army headquarters, en route from the
Paclno coast to Boston.
Major Baxter haa Just returned from
Japan, having left Nagasaki since the
opening of the Japaneso-Itussian war. He
Is averse to being quoted relative to war
matters In ths Orient, but Intimated that
a spirit of Intense loyalty and patriotism
prevails among the Japanese, and that they
feel they will conquer in the end.
Major Baxter will be remembered by
many Omaha friends, as he was chief
quartermaster of the Department of the
Missouri, with headquarters at this point,
during a greater part of the Spanish
American war. Major Baxter has been
assigned to duty in the Department of the
East, and left for Boston late Sunday
night.

Unole Sam's Agents Begin Inipection of
Bix Proposed Routes.

Work to Be Completed Within Three
Weeks, and Routes, It is Be
lieved, Wf.ll Be Established.
Beginning yesterday morning, a general
inspection of pre posed rural free delivery
mall routes was undertaken in Ne
braska, by the route inspectors assigned
to duty In this state. The purpose of
the inspection Is to ascertain the practlbtl
ity of the proposed routes, which now ag
gregate 100 or over, and which radiate from
various county seats throughout the state.
All of the routes have been petitioned for
and recommended, and upon the result of
the special inspection by route agents will
depend the establishment of the routes.
It haa almost Invariably followed that
the reports of the route agents are favor
able, and about all they have to do is to
ascertain if the requisite number of people
live along the different routes to warrant
the establishment of the same. It Is be
lieved at division headquarters in this
city that the work will be completed In
less than three weeks. Bix special agents
will be employed in the work.
Need More Carrrlere.
The rapid Increase of the postaT service
In Omaha has largely Increased the work
of the carrier force and a material addi
tion to the force is said tn be badly
needed. It is claimed that nearly every
letter carrier In starting awy from the
office now is loaded down with mall suffi
cient to weary a horse and the loads are
gradually Increasing dally. An effort will
be made by the Omaha posfofflce authori
ties to have the force increased in the
near future.
"Such a measure is almost Imperative in
order to maintain the efficiency of the local
delivery service," said an official.
