UNITED STATES STEEL OFFERS HOPE
Most Coaaplcnoas Movement of the
Market, bat the Spasm of Activ
ity Is Rather Short
Lived.
NEW TORK, March 10. Today's busi
ness on the stock exchange was the small
est In years. The slight Increase In the
mantel's animation thus tar this
wuelt gave way to practical stagnation to
day. The day s sales of M.Oiw shares on
August 1, lwm Is the low record for many
years past. Today's sales aggregated 73,u0
shares.
There Is some hope that the decisive lm-
rrovement in Iron trade revealed by the
ron Age's monthly blast furnace statis
tics would revive Interest in the stuck mar
ket. It proved to be worth of a point to
United States Steel preferred, which was
only temporarily held. This was ono of
the most conspicuous movements In the
market and Is a commentary on the day's
trading. Hales of the next dividend on
L'nlted States dividend were made on the
curb market at $l.6o per share for several
hundred shares. The decrease of over
8U,uuO,(ioO In value of exports compared
with the preceding February Is pretty
evenly divided between cotton and bread
stuffs. The falling off In the domestlo re
ceipts of cotton goes to reinforce this
showing and to renew anxiety over the
supply" of cotton. The market was equally
unresponsive to this unfavorable consid
eration. The opposition of officials of the
miners' union to the proposal for a soft
coal .strike was regarded as encouraging
from a stock market standpoint.
Foreign markets were reported stagnant
also and the decline In sterling In i'arls
marked a change In the attitude of that
center which hss continued to Invest in
London paper during the recent disturb
ances. There was not uch utter stag
nation In bonds as In stocks, but that sec
tion was rery dull and made no movement
of Importance. Total sales, par value.

CATTLE There was a liberal run of c:U

ceipts were the heaviest of the week to
date. Tho demand, though, was equal Jo
the occasion and buyers started out In
good' searson bidding gwnerslly steady
prices. Trading was HCtive from sttrt to
finish and a good clearance wss made.
The market on corn-fed sters could
safely be quoted active and steady on the
general run of cattle. Something that .lust
suited a buver's fancy may have been a
trifle srtiotiger. while on the other hind
the kinds that were, not Just to buyers'
liking were hard to sell st stesdy rrtces.
This unevonnees In the market, fi-ou-rh.
was not of enough Importance to be hardly
worth mentioning and the situation could
best be described by calling the market
active and steady. Tere -re r.n cat"" on

so that the top price today Is not as high
as yesterday. .
The cow market ws also active end

while trndlne was active, the pr1es raid

All kinds chnnged hands freely, to that a
