, , and Bartler,
A R. Crusen, formerly collator of cm
tom of Torto Rico, at Ban Juan, In regis
tered at the Millard hotel, It being his first
visit to Omaha sine ho vacated his office.
"1 left Porto Rico a month ago," he wild,
to apeaking of his return, "and stopped
for lame time In New York where I have
a son who has a position In the National
City bank. Bince then 1 have been visit
ing my father In Iowa and have, until now,
been practically Ignorant of what was
going on. I find that in my absence I have
been accused of all sorts of crooked work
and have even been posted as a candidate
for United States senator. Aa to the char
ges against me, this letter, I think, Is a
sufficient answer," whereupon Mr. Cruren
exhibited the following autograph letter
from Secretary Shaw:
TREASURT DKPARTMENT, WASH
INGTON, tec. 17, 1HU3. My Ienr Sir: Your
resignation, voluntarily tendtred, as col
lector of customs in the district of Porto
Rlro Is accepted.
While your administration ha been quite
ftoverely criticised. 1 am disposed to believe
much of It has been due to your seal In
prosecuting violations of customs laws and
regulations. The recent examination of
your office by the supervising special agent
was in manv ways very gratifying to your
friends, as well as to the department.
I certainly wish you all possible success
in any line of business In which you may
hereafter engage. Very truly Jou,'IAW
Hon A. R. Crusen, San Juan, Porto Rico.
"I wanted to get away from Porto Rico
a year ago," he continued, "and handed In
my resignation months before It waa ac
cepted. An American there Is practically
an exile and the money In the job Is no
compensation for such a life. I wanted to
come bank to civilisation and my friends,
and I expect to stay in Nebraska If I can
And a suitable business opening. I am not
a candidate for any office and do not want
any. I naturally dislike to be classed with
Savage and Hartley, because I hava never
trained with that crowd. I do like politics,
however, and hope to be In the fray for my
friends whenever they are Involved."
Mr. Crux en -will be In Omaha for a few
days yet.
SUES LAUGHLAND FOR . PAY
Assistant to Pan nd master I,oee Case
la Jastloa Court and Will
Appeal.
In tha case of Martin Kerns against City
Poundmaater John Laughland, brought
Into Judge Eastman's justice court on a
change of venue from Judge Foster's court,
judgment waa rendered Monday afternoon
for tha defendant. The case will be ap
pealed to the district court.
Kerns claims he performed five months
services for Laughland at tha pound dur
ing last winter and praya for a reasonable
compensation for such work, the amount
aued for 'being 1200 Korna further alleges
that a statement which he signed, stating
ha had no claim against the defendant, was
signed under a misrepresentation, aa he
(Kerns) can neither read nor write, but
understood the statement was an order on
tha mayor to sign Laughland's warrant so
tha latter could settle with the plaintiff.
It la aald tha poundmaster's .warrant was
held up on complaint to tha mayor that
Laughland owed Kerns for services per
formed. Tha poundmaater states that Kerr
tneraly helped around the pound for a place
to stay ana that his family was promised
an unnamed amount of money for the serv
ices, .which agreement Laughland aaya was
quite agreeable to Kerns, who made It dis
tinctly understood that he would sign the
document In dispute with that understand-
plaintiff and defendant were rep
resented by Attorneys Thomas A. Donahue
and Frank Munn, respectively.

City Clerk's Office as
t ' Secretary.
Mlas Naomi F. Bchenck haa resigned aa
seoretnry to the city clerk, effective April
L Mlsa Bchenck has filled the place ten
years consecutively and la considered the
person at the city hall who knows most
about a very chaotic collection of ordi
nance, reeords and documents of all kinds.
She gives aa a reason for wishing to leave
tha ssrvloa that she believes she la under
paid. At tha first of the present year her
salary waa Increased from tie to $96 a
month, but she thinks an even $100 la none
too little compensation for tha work per.
