NEW YORK, Feb. 29. The feeble waver
ing of prices In today stock market rep
resented nothing more than the fatjous
attempts of a tew small room traders to
find a moveable spot In the market fr
either an upward or downward course. The
aggregate sales for the day fell to 171.900
shares. There was a day record of less
than lfifi.OOO shares In August of last year.
The lowest for the current year until today
was touched on February 15, when 173.0X1
shares were sold. Tb market prove
rigid against attempts to move It In either
direction. The opening movement waa In
clined downward today. Pari was re
ported to be In a condition of nervou p
prrhenslon over .the preliminaries to. the
teulement.
In tlila market the Fries were slightly
heavier than the averaae. which was ac
counted for rby the extremely unfavor
able showing ttt rst earnings for January
with a fall of nearly a million dollars from
the level of last January, due both to an
Increase In onerailna- expenses and a de
crease In gruas earnings. Railroad reports
for the day, were genorally unufavorahle
with the notable exception of L'nlon Pa
cific, which was able to show a reduction
of expenses, which was expected to help
out the expected gross. Toe market got
no benefit on it until the pressure on Erie
and the general list waa relaxed. The
break In the copper price hurt Amalga
mated Copper, but It rallied later.
The dread of a Northern Securities de
clsion waa plainly an Influence In the mar
ket, but the potponement of the period
of suspense unlocked no animation In the
trading. lTlces hardened appreciably In
the afternoon. ...
I he coal conference over wages was a
depressive Influence! Pennsylvania was
notably so on consideration of its annual
statement. 1 nlted States Steel was ben
efited by reports of a large purchase of pig
iron ny tne corporation. 1 ho closing was
very nrro nut Intensely dull. Honds De
came Irregular after early heaviness. An
advance In United States Steel secoud five
helped the general list. Total sales par
value. $1, 1.15.000. United States old 4s ad

HuUS Receipts of hogs were fairly lib-
eral this morning for a Monday, and as
Chicago was quoted 10-o-luo lower, prices
nutumUy eased oft at this point hIvo. The
market-opened .slow .and generally a dime
loner. Packcra did not Uke hold with
any life.- and, in fact, some of them did
not seem .to sure whether they got any
hogs-or not. As a result the morning
was well advanced before the bulk was
dlspoaaU, of. .- The situation, however, kept
getting worse Instead of better. There
was a sharp break In provisions and pat-ken
used that to pound the market still
lower. rThe light weights-suffered In par
ticular toward the close and salesmen
railed the wlndup extremely dull and lo-it
2oc lower than Saturday. The bulk of
the medium to good weight hogs sold from
$5.15 to $6 i5, with the prime heavies from
$5 25 to $5.40. The light weights sold from
14 10 risiwn
The extreme close of the market was In
very bad shape and at noon there ; were
still ft good many hogs In first hands.
Owing to the big break In provisions
packers did not soem to be at all anxious
for what was left and their bids were fully
20c lower than Saturday's market with
some of the light weights even worse. In
fact salesmen were unable In some cases to
get even a bid on the light weights.

CATTLE Tliere was
run of cattle here this morning, much
smaller than was generally anticipated.
(Jtiier points also nau ratner limited nrttr
ings, and that being the case, the tendency
of prices was upward. Buyers were all
out In good season and trading was active.
The market on cornfed steers could safely
be quoted active and strong to. a .dime
higher. - Anything at all desirable change!
hands readily at the advance, whereas the
common kinds were rather neglected and
Showed little Improvement In price. That
class of offerings should be quoted steady
to strong. The-quality of the cattle on
sale this morning was nothing extra, so
that the market on paper does not look
particularly high.
The cow market was also brisk, and) if
anything, the Improvement was more pro
nounced on cows and heifers than on
steers. The medium to good grades
showed the greatest Improvement, but It
should ha remembered that the medium
kinds suffered he worst lust week. The
advances. was generally placed at around a
dime, while some salesmen were calling
the market as much as 104rl6o higher. It
wait verv evident that packers all wanted
a few fresh supplies, and aa offerings were
limited, thev had to pay more money ror
what they got. Canners, though, sold In
much the same notches as they did last
week, and, in fact, there has been very
Uttlo change In ruling prices on that elasg
of cattle for some time past.
Bulla did not Improve n sympathy with
steers and cowa. Trading was dull and
prices about the same aa at the close of
last week. Veal calves sold readily at
fully steady prices.
There were not many stockers and feed
ers In sight this monilng, and with a
falrlv good demand the better gradea roull
be quoted active and strong, with others
about steady. Representative sales:
