Corn has been the feature of the local

are now much heavier. This la accounted
for by the fact that cars can now be ob

would have shipped during several weeks,
but could get no cars from the roads.
During this week more have been obtained.

NEW YORK, Feb. 24.-Tha action of the
Stock market became halting and Irregular
today on a somewhat decreased volume of
business. The moderate gains established
during the early port of the day were sub
sequently lost. The motive of the early
advance waa not very clear, but was at
tributed to a covering movement among
the shorts.
The borrowing demand for shorts cn the
Stock exchange this morning Indicated a
short Interest. This prompted the traders
to take the short side In the hope of dis
lodging the shorts, but it was believed to
be more apparent than real. The profes
sionals' were then convinced that the real
liquidation going on was crThcealed by the
borrowing of stocks for temporary deliv
ery In order to hide the character of the
selling. There was. a feeling this morn
ing, on the contrary, that the selling move,
ment had somewhat overrun Its life. The
recovery In nrlce of Americans in IiOndon
helped this feeling. The buying movement
waa lacking In vigor and the resulting ad
vance was very moderate. The weak tone
of the later market was clearly enough due
to renewed apprehension over the financial
situation at the great money centers on
the continent.
The-reports of numerous banking failures
at Berlin. Paris, Vienna, Lyons, and ru
mors that there would be further failures
st other continental points weakened all
the markets. There was nothlr.g In the
war news to account for this reaction, but
It gave rlae to natural misgivings that the
uipiomatic situation might be strained so
as to threaten eventualities. The sudden
rebound on Monday, while our market n
closed, from the panicky slump on Satur
day waa attributed to more or less arti
ficial measures of support with the purpose
of averting the 'threatened failures, and the
evidence since that liquidation was proceed
ing undermined confidence anew.
in the domestic field the bears on the
market had as material to work on the an

rears or a striae in tne sort coal trade
are abating. The passing of the Panama
canal treaty will bring an earlv call for
repayment of 20 per cent of government de
posits from national banks. Discussion Is
beginning of the date of the spring move
ment of currency to the Interior, to which
point Is given by the fall to a discount of
New York exchange at Chicago. The for
eign exchange market advanced strongly In
response to the passage of the Panama
canal treaty, and also, presumably, on ac
count of the financial difficulties In Europe.
The relative firmness lh Amalgamated Cr p

The cow market was t lso slow and fully
a dime lower than yesterday and In ex
treme cases the loss amounted to as much
as 15c. For the week the decline is iliht
around a quarter, some of the best grades
heinar nerhans a little better than that and
the undesirable kinds a little worse. Trad- 211 western
lug Was very slow all day and It was late
before even the bulk of the arilvals waa
disposed of.
Bulls, veal calves and stags all sold lower
In sympathy with the decline on steer and
cows.
The sums as was the case yesterday.
Blockers and feeders held obout steady
where the quality was- at all good. The
offerings aro so light that while the de
mand could not be called heavy, it Is su in
dent to hold prices steady. Representative
sales:
Through his feeding operation he has heen
able to lncreuse considerably his number
of acres and 10 prove that there still is
money In feeding cattle.
W. C. Jeniaen brought In a bunch of ewe
from his feed lots at Muson City, Neb.,
that averaged 99 pounds and sold for 13.85,
a very good price considering the condi
tion of the market. Ha haa thirty more
loads of corn red sheep back which he
Intends to market later on when the market
Improves. He reported a rather Inferior
quality of corn around Mason City for feed
ing purposes. Cat tin feeding has been
rather light this winter and nearly all lh
stock haa been marketed. Mr. Jeniaen
haa been handling aheep for the last
twenty-live years and owns a ranch In
Montana whero he raises the Blieep that
he finishes up on corn at Mason City. In
apeaklng of conditions In Montana he said
that the grasshoppers v.'cre quite a pest on
the range and left It 1.1 veiy bad shape for
the winter, but owing to a nice open winter
and the alfalfa hay on the Irrigated lands
the biock will pull inrougn me winter in
fair condition.
