The cash market wag fairly strong on all
grains, but unusually so on oats. The of
ferings were, however, the lightest since
. tne cxcnange opened and were qulckiy
taken. The farmers early marketed one-
fourth more of the oat crop than last year
and, the prices remaining up, they are now
holding the balance. T he cash com dues

of Impending war the early news contained
several Items of exceedingly bearlnh Im

conditions on the 1'nriflc coast and in the
southwest were materially Improved. Arg

Amn irom tne neavy nqinoaiion eariy in
the dav, the most conspicuous feature In
the corn market was the relative strength
of the Julv dellverv. Heavy selling of May
ny. some or tne prominent noiaers caunea
a severe break early In the session. The
violent decline In wheat prices was the
prime cause for a similar action on the
fart of the corn market. The opening on
May was unchanced to Ho lower at bfiMr'a
5c. Prices Immediately started downward,
snd before sny support materialised May
nan sold nn to bc. 'mere was some in
fluential buying on the decline and a par
tial recovery was made. Late In the day.
on sctlve buying brought out by war news.
tnn market became exceedingly strong, and
prices advanced above the opening level.
May cloned Ho higher at Wic. after selling
at 544C July ranges between 61c and
53 He, cloning with a gain of lMil7o at
630. Local receipts were 189 cars, none of
contract grade.
Outs followed the course of other grains,
suffering a sharp setback during the flrnt
hours of trading. Heavy liquidation marked
the early trading, but an the senntnn ad
vanced lens pressure to nell was manlfented.
The market rallied during the laat half
hour In sympathy with corn, but the clone
was at about Inst night's figure. The open-
ins: on may was 'HV lower at 4wq4to,
and after decllnlna- to 44'ic the nrlce held
quite steady until near the clone It ad-
vanceu to 44c. The clone was at tne top
and on a level with yesterday's close. Local
receipts were 08 cars.
Trading in provisions wan active, nut a
weaker tone prevailed. The decline In
the grain pits and lower prices for hogs
had a dem-etnlna- Influence early In the dav
and the market waa unafile to regain losses
sustained under liberal liquidation at that
time. Tne clone was steadv at a small de
cline, May pork being off 12Hc at 113.40.

NEW YORK, Feb.. S.-Today's stock mar
kel wss a drifting match, operators for
the most part standing by and watching
the amusing fluctuations in the cotton mar
ket and awaiting the expected definite out
come ot the quenilon ot peace or war in the
tar east. The mere fact of the wild condi
tion of the cotton market was suitlclent to
exert a depressing Influence on stocks,
whether the price of cotton was advancing
or collapsing. As a matter of tact the
rebounds In that market were of .almost
equal violence with the drops. The grain
markets were also inclined to run off.
l.-lttle light was to be had from these
markets on the chances of peace or war.
The foreign arbitrage brokers. were idle,
reflecting the almost stagnant conditions
of foreign operations pending the settle
ment ot the question.. The weakness of
stocks grew more marked as the day pro
grenxed and during the latter part of the
session losses of a point or more beenme
quite general in the prominent active
stocks. The market showed no effective
resiliency and the closing was weak and
dull. There were some early points of re
aiftence to the declining tendency.
Amalgamated Cotioer was lifted on the
circulation of a rumor that another favor
able ruling had been made In its Montana
litigation. Sugar, I'nlted States Sleel pre
ferred and the Chicago A Alton stocks
made short-lived demonstrations of
strength, '1 he first, marked weakness de
veloped in Wabash preferred and in Penn
sylvania, and the whole market weakened
after the publication of a report that the
Pennsylvania Interests had Innued notes for
$60.ouu,0(0 at eighteen months at 44 per
cent. Several reports were Circulated dur
ing the day to Indicate a settlement of the
Pennsylvania-Gould dispute and an effort
wan made to make the proceeds of this
loan applicable to this settlement, but with
out any avail, to check the decline In the
stocks affected. Keen Interest is felt in
the financial world to learn the nrlce at
which these notes were placed, In view of
the precedent of the large temporary loans
secured by the Pennsylvania, the New York
v t-iurai ana otner rauroaas a year ago. and
tne substantial commission allowed to
bankers at that time In the shape of dls
count on the notes. Those nnten vera snh.

been abundant for some days Dust of a con
templated capital Issue by the Pennsyl

These evidences of hesvy loans to which
was added the sale of t&.000,ono of Missouri
Pacific notes, wss of more effect on senti
ment than the estimates of a gain in canh
reserves by the banks on the week of
about 43.000.000. In suite of the In rss auh-

HOGS There was only a fair run of hogs
here thla morning, but reports from all
points were unfavorable to the selling In
terest, and, aa a result, prices eased off
here also. The decline amounted to about
a nickel. Trading was not very brisk, ss
buyers did not take hold aa freely as they
might, nor did salesmen appssr very anx
ious to sell at the decline. The bulk ef
the olferlonTB. thoush. waa disposed of be
fore the middle of the forenoon. The
I Uarht welarhta sold larsely from $4 70 down.
I medium weights from It 7 to St-H, food
heavy hogs from 94.74 to 44 Jo. snd prime
henvles from $4 80 to $4.90.
The close of the hos market wan very
slow and week, as packers seemed to have
their more urgent orders filled. Some of
the late soles were as much nn a nickel
lower than the early maiket. Representa

SHEEP Thers waa a fairly liberal run

hat ths demand seemed to be In good
shape, and, as a result, the market on the
better grades ruled quite active, with prices
Bteaa vto ntrons. as compared wun yes
terday. The market Is now f tf 1 1 y lO-uluo
higher than the low time last Tuesday, and
the better grades show In some cases
still greatet improvement. . Home western
i en ,min soia tnis morning tor o. n, oui
they werr ,-holce. The Common kinds of
both sheep snd lambs were neglected, the
same as usual, and were nn more than
steady with ' yesterday. While the good
stuff sold early the common kinds were
neglected and salesmen found it hard to
move them.
There Is nothing new to be said of feed
ers. - Very few were offered today and
the market as a general thing was about
steady with yesterday.
