Thla It did to very good elTect. but there Was no edcertesa shown to foilow the advance and th market relapsed Into dullneas, which was lt characteristic previous to the upward movement. The market semed lo i. waiting for a fresh -move by the speculative party which assumed the lead ership of the rise, as the outside public remained conspicuous by Its absence. War news played a part in the reetrlction of the day s buslni as. but the sales for Lon don account, from that cause, were In moderate volume. Returns Of railroad rrnu nmlnc-a for the third week In January', now coming to hand, are of mixed complexion, but the average ration of Increase over last year's correaponding period Is falrlw maintained, the Atchiaon statement for liecember showing a decrease in net earnings of $M nfl. The increased operating expenses having wiped out the gain In groaa earn ings caused an unfavorable impression, although tf no effect on the Atchiaon stock Itself. The decrease In net earnings of 1ii roads reporting for November, which Is the first average decrease shown dur ing the cnlendar year. Is accounted for by the declines In coalera and trunk line eaminga. -the former owing to comparison with the favorable period following the strike settlement last year, while the southwestern group, of which the Atchi son is representative. Increased the net returns for November some 6.KS jier cent. The Financial Chronicle also notes a progressive decline in the ratio of In crease of gross earnings over last year, which was In July IS. 23 per cent, August 1 4P per cent. The mystery of the almost stationary condi tion of the loan Item of the New Tork clearing house banks through the six months' period of drastic liquidation in the securities market Is thus amply ex plained. The compilation of the conditions of national banka throughout the country as of January 22. under the call of the controller. The subtreasury paid out $1 Finn.oiio on account of Japanese gold deposited at San Francisco. The demand, I hit ugh, from local packers seemed to lie In fairly good conuitlon, and as a result the market held fully steady on anything at all desirable. Trains were very low in arriving and that dauayed the mar ket In bad shape and mads trading appear dull. About the usual proportion of the offer ings consisted of corn-led atewa and tl'i market could not be jjuotsd 4LHlhUig but generally steady. The quality ot the offer ings was not very good, most of tho cattle being only of common to fair cattle, wli.h only a few that could be called even good. Buyers, though, took the early arrivals In good bhupe, so that an early clearance was maoe. Trains kept arriving must all day, so that the market did nut come to a cloe until a late hour. The cow market waa fairly active and Cenerally steady. If anything the good to choice kinds sold a little stronger as the demand foi that class seemed to be quite ltlieral. while there were not very many of them on sale. Common to medium grades were rather slow, but still they commauded just about steady prices. Bulls, via' calves and stags sold so near In yesterday's notches that there is no uuotable change. There waa quite a spnnauing o stocaers and feeders in the yards, and as Indica tions were considered favorable for warmer weather speculators took hold quite freely of the belter grades and paid steady prices fur them. The common kinds were rather quiet, but still they sold about steady in moBt cases. Representative sales: BEEF ETEERB. N. At. f. 9a At. As salesmen all wanted steady prices trading was rery slow and It was late before anything line a clear ance was made. The fact that trains were late In arriving also delayed the market. They took hold fairly well this morning, however, and the more desirable grades sold mlthout much trouble at good steady prices. Borne heavy wether sold as high as I4.6U. which Is aa much as they would have brought at any time. Ewes told for 94 and yearlings to. When It came to the commoner" klnda, however, the mar ket waa slow and salesmen In some cases found It hard to get steady prices with yes terday's best time. It Is safe to say, though, that the market Is back to where it was before the break of laen week. A few feeders arrive on the market every flay and lell at right around steady vf0".
