The new through grain tariffs which quot i
reduced rates from Nebraska points to
Chicago hnve went Into effect. All or tne
roads which Up Nebraska territory hava
issued tariffs equalizing rates with the
Northwestern cut with the single exception
of the Rock Island. No tariff has as et
been issued by that line. The rales via t!m
Rock Island are therefore from 3 to 4 cents
per 100 higher to Chicago than via on
other road.
The nresent tariff is use by the Ito, k
Island makes the through rates exactly th i
sum of the rate into Omaha and tho pro
portional rate out to Chicago. It is rot br
lleved by local railroad men that the Rock
Island can maintain these rates for any
great length of time, but that It will
eventually Issue a tariff meeting the lower
through rates quoted by other lines.

Company at Meeting of
Dlrertora.
At the annual meeting of the Board of
Trade, held yesterday, the following officers
were elected :
John S. Brady, president; If. E. Palmer,
first vice president; James Walsh, second
vice president; H. F. Cndy, treasurer, and
L. C. Harding, secretary. Mr. Walsh Is
the only new officer elected. He succeeds
W. N. Naaon, who resigned tho posltlm
of vice president voluntarily.
The annual reports of the secretary and
treasurer were received and approved.

meet this afternoon at 3 o'clock in
the Commercial club. "We will meet Tues
days for the present," said Secretary Mer
chant. "No. we have no other suits on
hand." he continued. "The other roads
have been very fair to Omaha when tho
Northwestern would lo them. We are not
trying to make the Northwestern raise Its
through rates, but only to mt-ke It accept
grain from all roads at the aame price."
