NEW YORK. Jan. 8. Prices made small dJitional advances In todays sick k max et on fair Volume of business. Damns the private wire service and Interrup tion of the outside quotation service by tickers had little effect on the volume of r-usiness. Indicating the largely profes- icnal volume of the tradina. The main Influence on the advance iu prices was lie more cheerful tone of foreign, mar- ets and a feeling of restrained hopeful ness over a possibly peaceful outcome to ne iar eastern negotiation. The bank tatement also met expectations In the cash Item, which shoa'ed an Increase of ver (lo.w-O.fxiO. The continued expansion f the loan Item to the extent of IT. 4.1. TOO iss not received with as much satisfac- ton and Induced some conjecture as to the source of the borrowing. It was sug gested by some banking authoritiea that the low rate to which Interest In, New Y ork had declined had induced some reduction of trust company and out-of-town bank ing loans, wnicn had to oe taken up oy the clear ing house banks. At Is knoan that the midweek strength In sterling exchange was partly caused by remit lances to take up Lake ahore ores which were pliicen anroad a year go and this may have involved some borrowing from New York banks. London discounts continued to advance, but the weekly statement of the Imi'erlal bank of Germany made a strong showing and xchaiice st that center advanced. Amal gams ted Copper continued active and strong today and the Ksciflc. grangers. coalers, trunk lines and prominent ln- nstrlals made uulte uniform advances. LE The same as is trenerallr tha case on a Saturday, there were not enough cattle ottered to make a market. For the week receipts show a gain over last week amounting to about 6,0uu head, but as com- parea witn the came week of last year, there Is but little change. Corn fed steers have been in falrlv liberal supply all the week. The demand, how ever, was very biUk the first of the week and the tendency of prices upward. Oa Friday packers seemed to be well .oiled up and as a result they pounded the market 10 some extent ana took on an 01 the ad vance, leaving the market In practically the same position It was at the close of last week. Shorlfed cattle are quotable from 83 75 to 84 25. fair to good from 94.40 to 34.73 and well finished cattle sell from that up to 80, or even a little better. Ihe cow market was also active and strong tbe first part of the week, but ths same as steers, eased off a lrttle on Friday. The choice grades may be a trifle stronger, than they were a week ago, but still tlure is hardly enough change to be worthy of mention. Other kinds are quotably steadv. Canners and cutters are selling from 31.K8 to I2.G0. fair to good grades from 82.5u to 83.09 and good to choice from 83.50 to 83.K5, and something strictly prime might sell rn a nine nigner. Bulls have been in arood demand all Ida wet-k and have advanced considerably. Bo logna grades sell from 12.50 to 83 00, fslr to food from 33.00 to $3 50 snd good to choice rem 83 50 to $3 b5. Veal calves are about a quarter higher for the week, best grades now selling around 85.25, or even a little better. Blockers and feeders have been In noil supply all the week and with a fair de- mana the market has advanced 15 25c. The commoner klnda are seilino- t? oc down, fair to good from 83.25 to $3.50 and e -10 c 11 uico irora dJ.su to AA-oa. ReD resenta,Uv sales ; BEEF STEERS. Na- . Pr. Na At. The advance however, was very largely confined to the heavier weights and the llBht stuff wss neglected the same as usual and left until the last. Later in the morning reports from Chicago were very unfavorable to the Ber ing interests and the market here as a re sult closed slow and weak. Good weight iiitso puiu largely irom M OO 10 M.O, mixed from 84.80 to 84.65 and llaht stuff from n jj. down. In spite of the slow close practlcaTTv everything was out cf first hands In fairly good season. For the week receipts of hoes hw slight decrease as compared with last week. vui mi-re m a smaii increase over the cor responding week of last rear. On Utiit of this week there was a sharp advance in prices, the average of all the hogs amount ing to 84 75. Since that time, however, the general tendency or prides has beerv down ward, so that the advance of Mordav h been about lost, although today's advance leaves me mann just a snaae higher than It was a week ago today.
