J N i la -THE OMAITA DAILY BEK: FIJTPAY, .TANT7AKY 1. 1004. ALL THROUGH RATES ARE CUT Ererjr OLioago-Oaaba Line Meets Grain Tariff of Northwestern. ' LEAVES OMAHA TO RUSTLE FOB ITSELF Cenerat Isnprrsslesi la that Thin la . Derisive Itebaff to, Motrnral for a ;rala Market at This Tolal. Jirough grain rates In Nebraska from all point, except exclusive Union Faclflo Stations, have been reduced to Chicago. At the meeting of freight officials held In Chi cago Wednesday for the purpose of check ing rates to meet the Northwestern cut In the through rate announced a few daya ago it waa decided that all tines which have stations In Nebraska and which ran carry Brain on their own rails from local Nebraska points to Chicago will meet the low through rates put In effect by the Northwestern. According to the opinion of freight men generally, this action on the part of the railroads leaves Omaha high and dry so far as securing grain shipments from Ne braska Is concerned. The action prac tically places the roads, it Is said. In the position of levying- tribute to the amount of t to 24 cents per bushel on all grain transferred through Omaha elevators. For some reason, unexplained, the Union Pacific refused to lower Its local rates Into this city to meet the cut, preferring; . to take Its chances of securing such ship ments from Nebraska to Omaha as it Is possible 10 get at a nignrr rate than. Its competitors are quoting. The Union Pal c!fio having no line of Its own from this city to the east, It Is believed that that line could not see any profit in making the cut Where local rates already are low when nothing could he added to its receipts by a haul east of the river. Rome Secret peal. Another feature of the affair, as explained by a freight man. Is based on the supposi tion that the Union Pacific has an under standing with some line running east and north from Omaha whereby the rate from here to the eastern and northern markets will be equalised, by the line east of the river standing the 2 cents additional which the Union Pacific will charge, on shipments through, for the haul to this city. This could be equalized by the line east of the river making a refund from Its regular proportional rate of enough to make up the difference. Of course. It Is said, this would reduce the revenue of the eastern line to a point where there would be very little In the grain business. "If this supposition Is correct. It would account for tho Union Taclflo maintaining the rate, and It Is believed there are roads running east from Omaha whlqh would ac cept business on this basis on account of the fact that they have no feeders west of the river, and consequently when all lines which have such .feeders put In the low through rates they would be out of the business, only such as they could secure by an agreement with the Union Pacific," aid this man.
